Biological weathering of phlogopite during enriched vermicomposting

As the dominant macrofauna in many soils,earthworms play a significant role in mineral weathering and nutrient release from mineral structures into available forms for root uptake.Phlogopite is a trioctahedral micaceous mineral that can be weathered to other minerals through release of its interlayer potassium(K).In this study,we investigated the effect of earthworm activities and associated microbial communities on phlogopite weathering during the production of phlogopite-enriched vermicompost with different quantities of phlogopite added.An experiment was run under laboratory conditions using three levels of phlogopite(0,20%and 40%by weight)in triplicates.Each Petri dish contained 20 g of a mixture of cow manure and phlogopite,and vermicomposting process was performed by inoculation of eight Eisenia foetida earthworms.Changes in clay mineralogy and C/N ratio in each dish were assessed at days 0,45,90,135,and 180 during vermicomposting.The results indicated that phlogopite was partially weathered to vermiculite and interstratified mica-vermiculite during the vermicomposting process.The rate of weathering was higher during the early stages of vermicomposting(the first 90 d).The weathering of phlogopite was influenced considerably by the activity of earthworms and associated microbial communities during the organic matter transformation process.At the early stages of the process,the weathering rate for different levels of phlogopite was not significantly different,but over time it accelerated steadily,and the difference increased.

Background:Neglected tropical diseases(NTDs)affect more than one billion people living in vulnerable conditions.In spite of initiatives recently contributing to fill NTDs gaps on national and local prevalence and distribution,more epidemiological data are still needed for effective control and elimination interventions.Main text:Mozambique is considered one of the countries with highest NTDs burden although available data is scarce.This study aims to conduct a systematic review on published available data about the burden and distribution of the different NTDs across Mozambique since January 1950 until December 2018.We identified manuscripts from electronic databases(Pubmed,EmBase and Global Health)and paper publications and grey literature from Mozambique Ministry of Health.Manuscripts fulfilling inclusion criteria were:crosssectional studies,ecological studies,cohorts,reports,systematic reviews,and narrative reviews capturing epidemiological information of endemic NTDs in Mozambique.Case-control studies,letters to editor,case reports and case series of imported cases were excluded.A total of 466 manuscripts were initially identified and 98 were finally included after the revision following PRISMA guidelines.Eleven NTDs were reported in Mozambique during the study span.Northern provinces(Nampula,Cabo Delgado,Niassa,Tete and Zambezia)and Maputo province had the higher number of NTDs detected.Every disease had their own report profile:while schistosomiasis have been continuously reported since 1952 until nowadays,onchocerciasis and cysticercosis last available data is from 2007 and Echinococcosis have never been evaluated in the country.Thus,both space and time gaps on NTDs epidemiology have been identified.Conclusions:This review assembles NTDs burden and distribution in Mozambique.Thus,contributes to the understanding of NTDs epidemiology in Mozambique and highlights knowledge gaps.Hence,the study provides key elements to progress towards the control and interruption of transmission of these diseases in the coun

Luminescent hollow micro-and nanocrystals have been successfully obtained taking advantage of the self-assembly behavior and the aggregation-induced emission enhancement properties of several bispyrazolate Pt(II)metallomesogens decorated with four terminal alkyl chains.Oil-in-water droplets have been used to confine the Pt(II)compounds and drive them to be self-assembled via intermolecular Pt…Pt interactions into spherical aggregates of about 200 or 50 nm.Evaporation of the oil phase generates highly-stable aqueous dispersions of nanocrystals that emit a bright orange light as a result of the existence of^(3)MMLCT excited states.Different methods and conditions have been tested for studying the effect of several parameters such as the temperature and the stirring speed in the final particle size and in the polydispersity index.Moreover,the micro-and nanocrystals are able to entrap hydrophobic drugs between the alkyl chains of the compounds,forming stable dispersions of drug-loaded capsules in water.The droplet method is applied in the area of metallomesogens for the first time to synthesize self-assembled Pt(II)nanocapsules,which opens a new field of study that could allow the use of these liquid crystal materials in biomedical applications.

Landscape changes have caused the decline of biodiversity and affected the integrity of aquatic ecosystems.In this study,we assessed the influence of industrialization associated with urban development on aquatic environments and the biodiversity of semiaquatic bugs(Gerromorpha)at different scales(water quality,habitat,and landscape).Using the simple buffer method,we evaluated nine streams assessing water quality variables,habitat structure,and linear features(radius¼300 m,length¼600 m)for the percentage of land use and land cover.Our results found that species composition of Gerromorpha was mainly affected by primary forest cover,habitat integrity,leaves substrate,and water temperature(29%explanation),and the species richness was mostly influenced by the habitat integrity index(HII)and phosphorus concentrations.The model that best explained the variation in species richness showed a positive relationship with phosphorus concentrations and HII(43%variation).Therefore,our results show that those human activities are the main factors altering aquatic biodiversity from local to regional scales.Therefore,the retention of riparian forests–even in urban and industrialized areas–can maintain the diversity of semiaquatic insect species by providing suitable environments for the habitat,feeding,and reproductive requirements of these aquatic organisms.Finally,our results also show that the management of riparian vegetation in urban areas and industrial complexes promotes aquatic biodiversity conservation in regions under development in the Amazon.

BACKGROUND Gastric outlet obstruction(GOO)is one of the main complications in stage IV gastric cancer patients.This condition is usually managed by gastrojejunostomy(GJ).However,gastric partitioning(GP)has been described as an alternative to overcoming possible drawbacks of GJ,such as delayed gastric emptying and tumor bleeding.AIM To compare the outcomes of patients who underwent GP and GJ for malignant GOO.METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 60 patients who underwent palliative gastric bypass for unresectable distal gastric cancer with GOO from 2009 to 2018.Baseline clinicopathological characteristics including age,nutritional status,body mass index,and performance status were evaluated.Obstructive symptoms were graded according to GOO score(GOOS).Surgical outcomes evaluated included duration of the procedure,surgical complications,mortality,and length of hospital stay.Acceptance of oral diet after the procedure,weight gain,and overall survival were the long-term outcomes evaluated.RESULTS GP was performed in 30 patients and conventional GJ in the other 30 patients.The mean follow-up was 9.2 mo.Forty-nine(81.6%)patients died during that period.All variables were similar between groups,with the exception of worse performance status in GP patients.The mean operative time was higher in the GP group(161.2 vs 85.2 min,P<0.001).There were no differences in postoperative complications and surgical mortality between groups.The median overall survival was 7 and 8.4 mo for the GP and GJ groups,respectively(P=0.610).The oral acceptance of soft solids(GOOS 2)and low residue or full diet(GOOS 3)were reached by 28(93.3%)GP patients and 22(75.9%)GJ patients(P=0.080).Multivariate analysis demonstrated that GOOS 2 and GOOS 3 were the main prognostic factors for survival(hazard ratio:8.90,95%confidence interval:3.38-23.43,P<0.001).CONCLUSION GP is a safe and effective procedure to treat GOO.Compared to GJ,it provides similar surgical outcomes with a trend to better solid diet acceptance by patients.

Plant long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs)have emerged as important regulators of chromatin dynamics,impacting on transcriptional programs leading to different developmental outputs.The lncRNA AUXIN-REGULATED PROMOTER LOOP(APOLO)directly recognizes multiple independent loci across the Arabidopsis genome and modulates their three-dimensional chromatin conformation,leading to transcriptional shifts.Here,we show that APOLO recognizes the locus encoding the root hair(RH)master regulator ROOT HAIR DEFECTIVE 6(RHD6)and controls RHD6 transcriptional activity,leading to cold-enhanced RH elongation through the consequent activation of the transcription factor gene RHD6-like RSL4.Furthermore,we demonstrate that APOLO interacts with the transcription factor WRKY42 and modulates its binding to the RHD6 promoter.WRKY42 is required for the activation of RHD6 by low temperatures and WRKY42 deregulation impairs cold-induced RH expansion.Collectively,our results indicate that a novel ribonucleoprotein complex with APOLO and WRKY42 forms a regulatory hub to activate RHD6 by shaping its epigenetic environment and integrate signals governing RH growth and development.

Participatory Planning of Social and Spatial Organization in Agrarian Reform Policy in Brazil： An Assessment of the Implementation Challenges

The social endeavors for Agrarian Reform in Brazil have a history of at least sixty years. Throughout this time, distinct political regimes, increased land concentration, disordered urbanization and the development of a dynamic agribusiness sector inserted in global economy led to both the aggravation of social conflicts over land in Northern and Southern Brazil as well as new inquiries on the features necessary for an efficient Agrarian Reform Plan in the authors" country. Focused on the agrarian reform projects in the Brazilian Amazon, this work discusses on the political and methodological perspectives drawn in II PNRA (second National Plan of Agrarian Reform). The authors frame their account mostly along the theoretical scaffolding provided by the Bloomington School of Institutional Analysis. The authors analyze the multiple challenges facing the organization and the maintenance of the institutional structure designed to facilitate participatory planning and governance of collective resources in periurban settlements. The authors portrait these settlements as highly complex socio-ecological systems wherein socioeconomic asymmetries, cultural diversity and poor social capital and education promote political and ideological disputes that jeopardize safeguarding global commons.
