“Time flies over us,but leaves its shadow behind”(Nathaniel Hawthorne,1860,The Marble Faun).The shadow that separates the latest guidance on vascular liver disorders of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases(AASLD)from its former counterpart is 12 years long(1,2).Along the course,several guidelines from different societies have been published on this topic(3-7).As acknowledged in the preamble,the lack of high-quality evidence in the field led the AASLD to commission a guidance from an expert panel based on formal review and analysis of the *** thus differs from other guidelines that perform systematic reviews with explicit methods of searching,selection,and rating the quality of evidence and,if appropriate,meta-analysis on certain clinical questions(2).

Can sexual selection and disassortative mating contribute to the maintenance of a shell color polymorphism in an inter- tidal marine snail？

Littorina fabalis is an intertidal snail commonly living on the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus and showing frequent shell-color polymorphisms in the wild. The evolutionary mechanism underlying this polymorphism is currently unknown. Shell color variation was studied in mated and non-mated specimens of this species from different microareas in one locality from NW Spain, in order to estimate sexual selection and assortative mating that may （still） be operating in this population. The analyses across microareas allowed us to investigate frequency-dependent selection and assortative mating components, mechanisms that could maintain the polymorphism. The presence of shell scars caused by crab attacks, an environmental variable not related with sexual selection or assortative mating, was used as experimental control. This study provides new evidence of significant disas- sortative mating and some degree of sexual selection against some shell colors, supporting the results found 21 years ago in a similar study, i.e. in the same species and locality. The similarity of these estimates during the studied period suggests that this experimental approach is consistent and valid to be extended to other populations and organisms. In addition, sexual selection and assortative mating estimates did not change across microareas differing in shell color frequencies, suggesting than the polymor- phism can not be maintained by a frequency-dependent （sexual selection-based） mechanism. Our main hypothesis is that negative assortative mating could contribute to the maintenance of the polymorphism, perhaps by males showing distinct female color preferences when searching for mates [Current Zoology 58 （3）： 463-474, 2012].

The airborne pollutants monitoring is an overriding task for humanity given that poor quality of air is a matter of public health, causing issues mainly in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, specifically the PM10 particle. In this contribution is generated a base model with an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which is later optimized, using a swarm intelligence technique, named Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA). Several experiments were carried with BFOA parameters, tuning them to achieve the best configuration of said parameters that produce an optimized model, demonstrating that way, how the optimization process is influenced by choice of the parameters.

In the reconstruction of past movements of tectonic plates, the determination of reliable paleomagnetic poles is of utmost importance. To achieve accurate results, a full knowledge of the rock magnetic properties of the samples is required particularly for Curie point, for grain-size analyses in addition to thermal and alternating field (a.f.) demagnetization experiments. We present the comparative results of 20 sites drilled at 3 different Paleozoic areas: The Permian rocks of the Juchatengo area in Oaxaca, Mexico;the Late Silurian (~418 Ma) Mountain Pine Ridge Granite, the Hummingbird Granite in Belize, and the Early Leonardian Chochal Limestone in Guatemala. The samples of all 20 sites were subjected to a.f. and thermal demagnetization in 16 steps from NRM to 100 mT, the thermally demagnetized samples were cleaned in 15 increasing temperature steps from NRM up to 675℃. Principal component analysis was applied to the samples in order to obtain their respective mean directions. Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (SIRM), hysteresis loops, and coercivity experiments performed indicate that about 90% of the samples were characterized by Multi-Domain (MD) grain sizes and the rest were in the Pseudo-Single Domain (PSD) range of the Day diagram. Curie point determinations results ranged from 190℃ to 660℃, indicating the presence of titanomagnetites as well as hematite. In the Juchatengo area reliable poles were obtained from 3 sites, in Belize 3 sites and only 2 sites of the Permian Chochal Formation, Guatemala yielded coherent and useful results. All the “reliable” paleopoles obtained do not agree with the APWP of North America.

The use of Recurrence plots have been extensively used in various fields. In this work, Recurrence Plots (RPs) investigates the changes in the non-linear behaviour of urban air pollution using large datasets of raw data (hourly). This analysis has not been used before to extract information from large datasets for this type non-linear problem. Two different approaches have been used to tackle this problem. The first approach is to show results according to monitoring network. The second approach is to show the results by particle type. This analysis shows the feasibility of using Recurrence Analysis for pollution monitoring and control.

During the winter of 2009 grassland birds were monitored in the region of Cuchillas de la Zarca to estimate the association betweenAmmodramus bairdiiAudubon 1844, focal species of grassland and bird species belonging to the trophic guild of grassland granivorous birds (n = 25 ). The study area was divided into monitoring quadrants (n = 16) where 96 transects for bird monitoring were conducted, recording 16,635 individuals of which only 32.9% were in the trophic guild of grassland granivorous birds. The association betweenA. bairdiiand other species was estimated from the nonparametric statistical index of Kendall’s coefficient of concordance (W) and the p value, through permutation analysis (n = 10,000), finding positive and significant associations (p≤0.05) of the target species for study withSturnella magna,Passerculus sandwichensisandAmmodramus savannarum, species that share habitat preferences of natural grassland in good condition, slightly grazed and with little tolerance to the shrub cover. The association W ranged from 0.072 and 0.749. These results can recognize this region as an important area for the conservation of obligate grassland birds during winter, suggesting establish training programs to better utilize this resource by means of cattle activity.

Susceptibility to pneumococcal infections in Sj?gren syndrome (SS)―an autoimmune inflammatory disease―patients is not well known, although these patients frequently develop respiratory diseases. The relative risk of developing pneumococcal disease in SS patients versus diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM-2) patients, matched by age, gender, and length of enrolment was studied. From January 1998 to September 2013 the records of Donostia University Hospital were analyzed, which among other patient’s data includes: number and type of hospital admissions and number and type of laboratory determinations. Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates of the same serotype causing recurrent infections were characterized by PFGE. The study comprised 127 patients in the SS group (69 primary and 58 secondary) and 127 in the DM-2 group as control. In 12 SS patients, (9.4%) 22 pneumococcal disease episodes were detected. Two patients (1.6%) with a single episode each one were observed among DM-2 patients, p = 0.01, RR for SS patients 6 (95% CI 1.4 to 26.3). No differences could be demonstrated between the two groups of patients in infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus agalactiae. Most pneumococcal serotypes in SS patients belonged to the 13-valent (50%) and 23-valent (75%) anti-pneumococcal vaccine. SS patients are associated with and increased risk of suffering from pneumococcal disease. vaccination should be considered in this group of patients.

Intensive agriculture contributes to a decrease in microbial biomass and crop yields, while accelerating soil degradation. Arbuscular mycorrhizae associations have direct benefits for plant nutrition, and may be considered a useful tool in modem agriculture. Notwithstanding the widespread knowledge of these benefits, their use in intensive fanning systems has until now been ineffectual, because most mycorrhizal species have low tolerance toward high concentrations of nutrients and are poorly adapted to the soil and/or mycorrhizal functioning. The aim of this work was to test the efficacy of an arbuscular mycorrhizal （AM） fungus, Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum on lettuce and table grape crops in different intensive farming systems. The variables studied were root colonization percentage, external mycelium concentration, gas exchange, photosynthetic activity, root starch concentration and plant nutrition. The main finding was that the fungus is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH values, high salinity levels and abundant external mycelium. In lettuce, it produced significant increases in plant physiological activity and productivity （10%-15%）; and in table grapes, increases of 12%-45% in yield were achieved for more than three years in Crimson variety, and significant increases in fruit cluster weight, color uniformity and Brix （~Bx）. The AM species is protected by two patents and is a component of MycoUp, MycoUp Activ, Resid HC and Resid MG, whose commercial application has spread to more than 30 countries, with increments in crop yields of 8%-45% in lines as varied as leaf vegetables, berries, fruit, olives, grapes, greenhouse crops and cereals.

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage（78.33%）, hydrophobicity rate（62.67%）, and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil（reduction of about 12 mN/m）, thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53（52.7%）,Pseudomonas strain A6（38.2%） and Joostella strain A8（26.8%）. When growing in consortia,isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures（about 90%）, suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers（i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives） with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates.
