objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the use of propinox hydrochloride and scopolamine hydrochloride in patients presenting abdominal colic (abdominal pain), in terms of treatment efficacy and tolerability. Material & Methods: This was an analytical, retrospective, comparative study based on hospital records of outpatients treated at Serviço de Clínica Médica do Hospital das Clínicas Costantino otaviano (HCTCo) and at Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Rio de Janeiro, from 1988-1998. Subjects were divided into two groups: patients from Group 1 were treated with propinox hydrochloride, while patients from Group 2 were treated with scopolamine hydrochloride. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism version 5.0. For comparison of categorical variables, we used the chi-squared or Fisher’s test, while continuous variables were analyzed using ANoVA or the Student’s T test. Results: A total of 1042 subjects were included, of which 525 were allocated to Group 1 and 517 to Group 2. Mean treatment duration was 9.166 days (±4.208) in Group 1 and 8.795 days (±5.052) in Group 2, with no statistically significant difference in treatment duration between the two groups (p = 0.198). All subjects in Group 1 were treated with propinox 10 mg (2 coated tablets, three times per day) while all subjects in Group 2 were treated with scopolamine hydrochloride 10 mg (2 coated tablets, three times per day). There were no statistically significant between-group differences in weight, BMI, heart rate, and respiratory rate at pre- and post-treatment;with the exception of higher post-treatment systolic blood pressure in Group 1, blood pressure measures also remained homogenous. Adverse events were reported among both treatment groups with no significant between-group difference in incidence (p = 0566). Comparing the biogeochemical functioning of two arid subtropical coastal lagoons:the effect of wastewater discharges

Nutrient flux,net metabolism,and N2 fixation and denitrification processes were estimated and compared in two semi-arid subtropical coastal lagoons in the Gulf of California:El Soldado(ES),where no wastewater is discharged,and El Rancho(ER),where shrimp farm effluents are regularly *** processes were evaluated with the LoICZ *** time wasoth *** fluxes were higher in ER than in ES and both systems acted as nutrient sinks for most of the *** showed a larger nutrient flow rate in the summer and autumn due to the input of shrimp-farm *** fluxes increased in both ER and ES in the winter in response to the increased nutrient supply from coastal *** and ES both showed autotrophic metabolism and N2 fixation in the spring,autumn,and winter,but heterotrophic metabolism and denitrification in the *** dominated in ER(−2.21 mmol m^(2)day^(−1))and values were higher than those estimated in ES(−0.45 mmol m^(2)day^(−1)).The comparative analysis between ES and ER evidenced the significant changes in its biogeochemical performance caused by the input of anthropogenic nutrients,and can orient the environmental management of coastal lagoons.

objective: To evaluate the synergic effects of a novel oral supplement formulation, containing prebiotics,yeast b-glucans, minerals and silymarin(Silybum marianum), on lipid and glycidic metabolism, inflammatory and mitochondrial proteins of the liver, in control and high-fat diet-induced obese ***: After an acclimation period, 32 male C57 BL/6 mice were divided into the following groups:nonfat diet(NFD) vehicle, NFD supplemented, high-fat diet(HFD) vehicle and HFD supplemented. The vehicle and experimental formulation were administered orally by gavage once a day during the last four weeks of the diet(28 consecutive days). We then evaluated energy homeostasis, inflammation, and mitochondrial protein expression in these groups of ***: After four weeks of supplementation, study groups experienced reduced glycemia, dyslipidemia,fat, and hepatic fibrosis levels. Additionally, proliferator-activated receptor-α, AMP-activated protein kinase-1α, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ co-activator-1α, and mitochondrial transcription factor A expression levels were augmented;however, levels of inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB kinase subunit a and p65 nuclear factor-κB expression, and oxidative markers were reduced. Notably, the cortisol/C-reactive protein ratio, a well-characterized marker of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis immune interface status, was found to be modulated by the ***: We discovered that the novel supplement was able to modify different antioxidant, metabolic and inflammatory pathways, improving the energy homeostasis and inflammatory status, and consequently alleviated hepatic steatosis.

Evaluation of Two Highly Porous Microcrystalline Biphasic Calcium Phosphate-Based Bone Grafts for Bone Regeneration: An Experimental Study in Rabbits

A biphasic bone grafting biomaterial based on a mixture of calcium phosphates and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) phases with high nanoporosity was synthesized. The synthesis route was based on calcium phosphate composition and the incorporation of glycolic acid as a pore former, giving a material composed of 97% β-TCP and 3% calcium orthophosphates (CaPo4). An in vitro study of the purity, microstructure, crystalline domain, and pores size for the material obtained was performed by SEM analysis as well as full structural characterization. The region of interest related to the surface was determined by the specific surface area measured with the BET method. In vivo evaluation of bone response was performed by implanting the new low-cost biphasic manufacturing material synthesized in this work, which was compared with a biphasic material of similar chemical and microstructural composition existing in the commercial market and with higher cost called Synergy odontit® β-TCP. The materials were implanted separately into 5 mm diameter defects in the tibias of New Zealand White rabbits at 30, 60, and 90 days. The results obtained showed that the host tissue well accepted the new biphasic material;the presence of new bone formation was observed. A more complete resorption was observed for the new microcrystalline biphasic material compared to for a commercial β-TCP material.
