Soil texture prediction through stratification of a regional soil spectral library

Knowing the spatial distribution of soil texture,which is a physical property,is essential to support agricultural and environmental decision *** texture can be estimated using visible,near infrared,and shortwave infrared(Vis-NIR-SWIR)***,the performance of spectroscopic models is variable because of soil ***,few studies address the effects of soil sample variability on the performance of the models,especially for larger spectral libraries that include soils that are more ***,the objectives of this study were to:i)apply Vis-based color parameters on the stratification of a regional soil spectral library;ii)evaluate the performance of the predictive models generated from the spectral library stratification;iii)compare the performance of stratified models(SMs)and the model without stratification(WSM),and iv)explain possible changes in prediction accuracy based on the ***,a regional soil spectral library with 1535 samples from the State of Santa Catarina,Brazil was *** reflectance data were obtained by Vis-NIR-SWIR spectroscopy in the laboratory using a spectroradiometer covering the 350–2500 nm spectral ***,silt,and clay fractions were determined using the pipette ***-two components of color parameters were derived from the Vis spectrum using the colorimetric models.A cubist regression algorithm was used to assess the accuracy of the applicability of the initial models(SMs and WSM)and of the validation between the *** order derivatives(FODs)at 0.5,1.5,and 2 intervals were used to explain possible changes in the performance of the *** SMs with higher contents of clay and iron oxides obtained the highest accuracy,and the most important spectral bands were identified,mainly in the 480–550 and 850–900 nm ranges and the 1400,1900,and 2200 nm ***,stratification of soil spectral libraries is a good strategy to improve regional assessments of soil resou

Competition among rare earth elements on sorption onto six seaweeds

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** Osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.

Evaluation of Geometric Quality of Weld Beads in the Joining of Carbon Steel Pipelines with Single Pass

This work presents the uncertainty evaluation associated with the measurement of linear parameters that define the weld geometry, specifically the width, using a profile projector, in order to meet the current technical standards. The following steps were proposed and implemented: identification of linear parameters that define the weld geometry;identification and study of variables that affect the measurement of these parameters;the adoption of the mathematical model to estimate the uncertainty;planning and execution of experiments for data collection, calculation of uncertainty and, finally, analysis and discussion of the results. Through the results analysis it was concluded that the weld in overhead position produces the lowest front bead width values and the vertical weld produces the largest width values. The expanded uncertainty values were between 0.016 mm and 0.075 mm for all measurements, and the overhead position showed, on average, the highest values.

Determination of the Bromine, Manganese and Antimony in Nicotiana tabacum Solanaceae by Using the Neutron Activation Analysis Technique

Tobacco addiction has been mentioned as a leading cause of preventable illnesses and premature disability. Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer and one of the factors that most contribute to the occurrence of heart diseases, among others. The herbaceous species Nicotiana tabacum is a plant of the solanaceae family used for tobacco production. Some authors have conducted research about heavy metals and the toxicity of tobacco. It is, frequently, found in low concentrations in the ground, and superficial and underground waters, even though they do not have environmental anthropogenic contributions. However, with the increase of industrial activities and mining together with the agrochemical use of contaminated organic and inorganic fertilizers, an alteration of the geochemical cycle occurs. As a consequence, the natural flow of these materials increases and is released into the biosphere, where they are often accumulated in the superior layer of the ground, accessible to the roots of the plants. During planting and plant development, fertilizers and insecticides, including organochlorines and organophosphates, are used;consequently, the smoke from cigarette smoking presents various toxic substances, such as bromine (Br), manganese (Mn) and antimony (Sb), elements studied in this work. The procedures for the preparation of the samples were carried out in our laboratories and submitted to irradiation with thermal neutrons at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP), in the Atomic Energy Institute IEA-R1 research reactor. The irradiated material was, then, analyzed by gamma spectrometry, using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe).

Postural Balance in the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment: Relationship to Accidental Falls

This study analyzed postural balance in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment and its relationship to accidental falls. A quantitative and quasi-experimental method was used in a sample of 43 elderlies between 64 and 88 years old, mostly females. Data collection was performed in two Basic Health Units in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2014. The instruments used were the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Tinetti scale, Motor Scale for the Elderly (EMTI) scale, and Elderly Falls Diary. The data were analyzed with the SAS statistical software version 9.3.1. The scales were applied before and after the psychomotor interventions. A significant difference was observed between the evaluating moments. Balance improvements were observed in all age groups, suggesting that all elderlies, regardless of age, showed satisfactory responses to the implemented psychomotor activities. The elderlies who fell more frequently were those between 60 and 69 years old. It is noteworthy that the age group with the lowest incidence of falls was that of elderlies between 70 and 79 years old. It was concluded that psychomotor activities are beneficial, regardless of age, proving their effectiveness when continued stimuli with cognitive and psychomotor activities are carried out.

This study hypothesized that different land-use affect the microbial enzymatic stoichiometry and C-,N-,and P-acquisition in Brazilian semiarid ***,the enzymesβ-glucosidase(C-acquiring enzyme),urease(N-acquiring enzyme),and acid phosphatase(P-acquiring enzyme)were assessed in soil samples collected at 0−5 and 5−10 cm depth from a tropical dry forest,a protected area with Angico,a protected area with Ipê,scrub area,and an agricultural area with *** values of C-,N-,and P-acquiring enzymes were used to calculate the enzymatic C:N,C:P,and N:P *** values of C:P and N:P ratios were higher at 0−5 cm depth,while no significant variation,between soil depth,was observed for C:N *** values of C-and N-acquiring enzymes were higher at 0−5 cm in tropical dry forest areas and Angico forest,*** all land use types,the values of vectors L and A were higher than 1°and 45°,*** study showed that both land-use and soil depth influence the enzymatic stoichiometry,showing higher values of C-and N-acquiring enzymes in native and protected forests at soil surface.

Initial Growth and Gas Exchanges of Plants of Colored Cotton Submitted to Saline Stress

The objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of saline stress on the initial growth and physiological parameters of three varieties of cotton plants, being two cultivars of colored fiber (BRS Topázio and BRS Verde) and one of white fiber (BRS 286). The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions. After chemical depletion with sulfuric acid, five seeds were seeded in polyethylene pots of 20 kg, leaving only one plant per pot after thinning. The experimental design was completely randomized, with a factorial scheme of 3 × 5, with five replications, totaling 75 plots, being three cotton varieties and five saline stress treatments—1.1;3.1;5.1;7.1;9.1 dS m−1. The evaluations occurred at 15 and 30 days after the beginning of the treatments (DAT) for growth variables (plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and leaf area) and gas exchange (stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis rate and transpiration. The variety that was most resistant to the salt stress levels studied was BRS 286, followed by BRS Topazio and BRS Verde.

Analysis of 472,688 Severe Cases of COVID-19 in Brazil Showed Lower Mortality in Those Vaccinated against Influenza

Objective: To analyze the severe cases of COVID-19 in Brazil in 2020 and compare those vaccinated and unvaccinated against influenza in invasive ventilation, admission in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and deaths. Method: Cross-sectional study with public data from the OpenDataSUS platform, regarding confirmed severe cases for COVID-19 in Brazil in the year 2020. Data were analyzed by SPSS, from the chi-square test of independence and binary logistic regression. Results: The population was 472,688 cases and 177,640 deaths, with a lethality of 37.58% in severe cases. The test of independence was highly significant in vaccinated survivors (<0.0001), and regression showed an almost twofold odds ratio for invasive ventilation, ICU admission, and death in unvaccinated cases. Conclusion: We recommend mass influenza vaccination as an adjuvant in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.

The Assessment of Medical Students’ Chronotypes

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the circadian typology of medical students at public universities from one of the northeastern states in Brazil, active in the morning and afternoon shifts, checking the compatibility between their study time, productivity, income and chronotype. Methods: To obtain the results, the assessment of the chronotype in 342 medical students of both sexes was considered. Each participant was submitted to the questionnaire developed by Horne and Ostberg, adapted by Cardinali, Colomberk and Rey. It’s composed of 9 questions, providing the general ranking of each individual. Based upon scored, the chronotypes were classified. Results: The sample was composed of 49.12% (168) male and 50.87% (174) female subjects, a similar gender distribution of enrolled students during data collection time. By applying the questionnaire, the prevalent rating among the medical students as moderately morning (29.82%) and intermediate (43.85%) has been relevant. The academic performance assessment in two morning-intermediate groups (8.16) had no significant distance from others considered afternoon active (8.20). Conclusion: The health sciences student, especially Medicine, faces constant adaptation of scheduling, in the attempt of fulfilling the requirements throughout the course, causing chronogram desynchronization effects and forced readaptation to each different school semester.

Organomineral Phosphorus Fertilization in the Production of Corn,Soybean and Bean Cultivated in Succession

The use of organic waste in agriculture has been used aiming at greater productivity, decrease in the cost of production and sustainable use of resources. The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of phosphate fertilization with the maintenance of organomineral fertilizers, combining poultry manure and soluble or reactive phosphate, in the production of grains in corn culture and the residual effect for subsequent crops of beans and soybeans. The experiment was conducted in Sete Lagoas, MG, in 2015, using three fertilizers with sources of different phosphorus sources (triple super phosphate—STP, organomineral with STP and organomineral with Bayovar phosphate) applied at the doses of 65, 130, 195 and 260 kg·ha¯1 of P2O5 total, and compared to the control without phosphate fertilization. We evaluated the contents of foliar P, P accumulation in the grains, yields of corn grains, beans and soy, accumulated productivity and export of accumulated P of the three cultures. The three cultures assessed presented higher productivity when compared to the average of the factorial treatments that received phosphate fertilization relative to the control. Organomineral fertilizers increased grain production, obtaining average productivity equal to or greater than those obtained with the exclusive use of STP.
