Phosphorus fractions and sorption dynamics in the sediments of two Ca-SO4 water reservoirs in the central Argentine Andes

Phosphorus（P） fractionation and sorption behavior were studied in the sediments of two calcium-sulfate(Ca-SO4: Ca2+170 mg L-1; SO42-400 mg L-1) water reservoirs in the southern central Argentine Andes-El Carrizal Reservoir（ECR）,which stratifies in summer and El nihuil Reservoir（EnR）,which is vertically mixed throughout the year. Sediment size classes reflected the lithology of both basins and the reservoirs relative location: ECR（downstream from a valley adjacent to a mountain environment） had higher clay proportions while the sand fraction was more important in EnR（just next to a mountain environment）.In both reservoirs, the chemical composition revealed low alteration and calcium enrichment. Total P content was relatively high(1.1-1.6 mg P kg-1dry weight) as expected from the contribution of marine formations. P fractionation was dominated by Ca-P（ECR, 69% and EnR, 63%） followed by organic-P（23%）in summer-anoxic ECR and by iron/aluminum（Fe/Al）-P（27%） in oxic EnR. Batch experiments showed that sorption behavior in ECR had a typical Langmuir isotherm plot while in EnR that model fitted only at low dissolved P values(nd co-precipitation evidence was observed at higher P concentrations. It is proposed that lower Fe/Al-P content in anoxic（ECR） vs. oxic（EnR） sediments results from the P released from iron-bound phosphorus due to sulfate reduction-ferrous sulfide formation in an anoxic environment. This condition should enable ECR sediments to adsorb P into fresh oxidized iron,and EnR sediments to co-precipitate P with calcium due to Fe/Al-P saturation, as observed in batch experiments. This paper constitutes the first description of phosphorus content and dynamics in reservoir sediments in arid central western Argentina, where water sulfate concentrations are naturally high due to basin lithology.

The intricate interplay between natural compounds like curcumin and the gut microbiome has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential therapeutic implications in various health ***,a polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric,exhibits diverse pharmacological properties,including anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and anticancer *** how curcumin modulates gut microbiota composition and function is crucial for elucidating its therapeutic *** review examines the current literature on the interactions between curcumin and the gut microbiome.A systematic search of relevant databases was conducted to identify studies investigating the effects of curcumin on gut microbial diversity and *** findings from studies exploring curcumin's efficacy in neurological disorders,gastrointestinal diseases,and metabolic dysfunction are synthesized and *** have demonstrated that curcumin supplementation can modulate gut microbiota composition and function,leading to beneficial effects on gut health and *** underlying curcumin's therapeutic effects include immune modulation,neuroprotection,and inflammation ***,challenges such as poor bioavailability and safety concerns remain significant hurdles to *** interactions between curcumin and the gut microbiome hold promise for therapeutic interventions in a diverse range of health *** research is needed to optimize curcumin formulations,improve bioavailability,and address safety concerns.

Fish constitutes the main protein source for the Amazonian ***,the impact of different anthropogenic activities on trace element and metal accumulation in fish and their risks for human health at a regional scale remain largely *** we assessed exposure levels of 10 trace elements andmetals(Cr,Mn,Fe,ni,Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb,and Hg)in 56 samples belonging to 11 different species of fish from the Brazilian *** studied the relationship between exposure levels,fish origin,and fish feeding habits,and assessed toxicological and carcinogenic risks for the Amazonian *** significant correlation was found between sampling site and exposure levels to the studied elements,but a significant difference was found between the accumulation of some metals and the position of the fish species in the food *** concentrations of Cr and Hg in fish flesh were found to exceed the Brazilian limits for human *** study shows that current fish consumption patterns can lead to estimated daily intakes of Hg,As and Cr that exceed the oral reference dose,thus posing a toxicological ***,carcinogenic risks may be expected due to the continued exposure to Cr and *** results of this study show that the consumption of wild caught fish in the Amazon region should be ***,continued monitoring of trace element and metal contamination in fish and on the health of the Amazonian population is recommended,particularly for riverine and indigenous communities.

Combination of hydrotreating and delayed coking technologies for conversion of residue

Residue conversion by combining catalytic hydrotreating and delayed coking has been evaluated comparatively with both processes *** operating conditions are defined to achieve the greatest economic benefit for upgrading an atmospheric residue from a heavy crude oil.A literature model was adapted to simulate the hydrotreating reactor,and for delayed coking,correlations reported in the literature were *** results with both approaches were employed to calculate the techno-economic feasibility of the combined process *** combination of hydrotreating and delayed coking presented an increase in light fractions of 29% and a reduction in coke production of 47.8%.Based on the calculated net benefit values,it was demonstrated that the combination of hydrotreating and delayed coking is technically and economically better than using each process alone,with highest benefit of 57.7 USD·m^(-3).

The relationships between climate conditions and wood density in tropical forests are still poorly *** quantify spatial dependence of wood density in the state of Minas Gerais(MG,Brazil),map spatial distribution of density,and correlate density with climate variables,we extracted data from the Forest Inventory of Minas Gerais for 1988 trees scaled throughout the territory and measured wood density of discs removed from the *** variables were extracted from the database of the Ecological-Economic Zoning of Minas *** spatial analysis,tree densities were measured at 44 georeferenced sampling *** data were subjected to exploratory analysis,variography,cross-validation,model selection,and ordinary *** relationships between wood density and environmental variables were calculated using dispersion matrices,linear correlation,and *** density proved to be highly spatially dependent,reaching a correlation of 96%,and was highly continuous over a distance of 228 *** distribution of wood density followed a continuous gradient of 514-659 kg m^(−3),enabling corre-lation with environment *** was correlated with mean annual precipitation(−0.57),temperature(0.63),and evapotranspiration(0.83).Geostatistical methods proved useful in predicting wood density in native tropical forests with different climate *** results confirmed the sensitivity of wood density to climate change,which could affect future carbon stock in forests.

Comparing the biogeochemical functioning of two arid subtropical coastal lagoons:the effect of wastewater discharges

nutrient flux,net metabolism,and n2 fixation and denitrification processes were estimated and compared in two semi-arid subtropical coastal lagoons in the Gulf of California:El Soldado(ES),where no wastewater is discharged,and El Rancho(ER),where shrimp farm effluents are regularly *** processes were evaluated with the LOICZ *** time wasn both *** fluxes were higher in ER than in ES and both systems acted as nutrient sinks for most of the *** showed a larger nutrient flow rate in the summer and autumn due to the input of shrimp-farm *** fluxes increased in both ER and ES in the winter in response to the increased nutrient supply from coastal *** and ES both showed autotrophic metabolism and n2 fixation in the spring,autumn,and winter,but heterotrophic metabolism and denitrification in the *** dominated in ER(−2.21 mmol m^(2)day^(−1))and values were higher than those estimated in ES(−0.45 mmol m^(2)day^(−1)).The comparative analysis between ES and ER evidenced the significant changes in its biogeochemical performance caused by the input of anthropogenic nutrients,and can orient the environmental management of coastal lagoons.

Litter production and decomposition are critical to forest productivity,nutrient cycling,and carbon seques-tration in tropical woody ***,nutrient release and leaf litter stoichiometry in tropical legume tree plantations over the long term after outplanting are poorly understood or even *** improving our under-standing of the pattern of changes in the decomposition of n-fixing leaf litters and their possible impact on carbon stor-age,we measured litter production,mass loss and nutrient release for 240 d during litter decomposition for two tropical legume tree species(Plathymenia reticulata and Hymenaea courbaril),in Rio de Janeiro,*** production for *** was 5.689 kg ha^(−1) a^(−1) and 3.231 kg ha^(−1) a^(−1) for *** patterns of mass loss rates were similar;however,nutrient release was greater for ***,while *** showed immobilization of nutrients,especially for n,which increased by almost 20%in the early phase of decomposition followed by gradual *** from the n-fixing species did differ in nutrient chemistries over time,which was not surprising given that initial nutrient concentrations varied broadly,except for C and *** of the nutrient concentrations increased as the remaining litter mass decreased in both species,except for C and *** C:n and n:P ratios differed between the species,but n:P did not correlate to mass *** species had n-rich leaves,but *** decomposition was very likely P-limited,while *** seemed to be co-limited by n and *** results showed different patterns in nutrient release and the stoichi-ometry involved in the decomposition dynamics of the two tropical n-fixing species,even though they have similar litter decay *** species,but especially ***,may help re-establish nutrient cycling in disturbed ecosystems.

BACKGROUnD Blink and masseter reflexes provide reliable,quantifiable data on the function of the central nervous system:Delayed latencies have been found in patients with neurocognitive disorder(nD)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),but this has not been studied in patients with both *** To investigate if older adults with nD plus T2DM have prolonged latencies of blink and masseter-reflex and if they were associated with disease *** This cross-sectional study included 227 older adults(>60 years)from Colima,*** disorder was identified by a neuropsychological battery test,and T2DM identified by medical history,fasting glucose,and glycosylated *** in the early reflex(R1),ipsilateral late(R2),and contralateral late(R2c)components of the blink reflex were analyzed for all subjects,and 183 subjects were analyzed for latency of the masseter *** In 20.7%of participants,nD was *** 37%,T2DM was *** in R1,R2,and R2c were significantly prolonged for groups with nD plus T2DM,nD,and T2DM,compared with the control group(Plex was only prolonged in older adults(regardless of T2DM status)with nD vs controls(P=0.030).In older adults with nD and without T2DM,the more the cognitive impairment progressed,the more prolonged latencies in R2 and R2c presented(PnCLUSIOn These findings suggest that blink and masseter reflexes could be used to evaluate possible changes in brainstem circuits in older adults with nD and T2DM.
