This article presents the overall morphological structure of the Brazil nut tree(Bertholletia excelsa)fruit pericarp,from macro to nano *** acquired knowledge would be used for the development of new applications,like using the materials as fillers for biocomposites,or as a hierarchical architecture model for *** research was performed using stereo and light microscopy and conventional and force field emission scanning electron *** pericarp presents three layers:the exocarp,a dark gray,brittle and fragile outer layer;the mesocarp,a beige,dry,rigid,impermeable and fibrous intermediate layer;and the endocarp,an inner layer with similar characteristic as the exocarp,but formed next to the ***,the exocarp and the endocarp presented minor regions of sclereids,fibers and vascular cell bundles,inside major regions of parenchyma *** mesocarp presents a structure of fiber cells regions alternating with sclereids and vascular cells regions,arranged in a composite like arrangement,with the fibers cells bundles acting as randomly oriented disperse phases in a sclereid cells *** arrangement was associated with the mesocarp relative superior proprieties,indicating a great material for using as fillers for biocomposites or in biomimetics applications.

Slip-model Performance for Underexpanded Micro-scale Rocket Nozzle Flows

In aerospace Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems （MEMS）, the characteristic length scale of the flow approaches the molecular mean free path, thus invalidating the continuum description and enforcing the use of particle methods, like the direct Simulation Monte Carlo （dSMC）, to deal with the non-equilibrium regions. Within the slip-regime （0.01〈Kn〈-0.1） both approaches, continuum and particle-based, seem to behave well in terms of accuracy. The present study summarizes the implementation and results obtained with a 2nO-order slip boundary condition in a Navier-Stokes solver to address the rarefaction near the nozzle walls. Its assessment and application to a cold-gas micro-scale conical nozzle of 300μm throat diameter, discharging into the low-pressure freestream, constitutes the major aim of the work. The slip-model incorporates the velocity slip with thermal creep and temperature jump, thus permitting to deal with non-isothermal flows as well. Results show that the gas experiences an intense rarefaction in the lip vicinity, pointing to the limits of model validity. Furthermore, a strong Mach deceleration is observed, attributed to the rather thick subsonic boundary layer and supersonic bulk heating caused by the viscous dissipation, in contrast with the expansion to occur in large rocket nozzles during underexpanded operation.

Multiple primary colorectal cancer: Individual or familial predisposition?

Colorectal carcinoma(CRC) is one of the most frequent cancers. Along the surface of the large bowel, several foci of CRC may appear simultaneously or over the time. The development of at least two different tumours has been defined as multiple primary CRC(MPCRC):When more than one tumour is diagnosed at the same time, it is known as synchronous CRC(SCRC), while when a second neoplasm is diagnosed some time after the resection and/or diagnosis of the first lesion, it is called metachronous CRC(MCRC). Multiple issues can promote the development of MPCRC, ranging from different personal factors, such as environmental exposure, to familial predisposition due to hereditary factors. However, most studies do not distinguish this dichotomy. High- and low-pentrance genetic variants are involved in MPCRC. An increased risk for MPCRC has been described in Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, and serrated polyposis. Non-syndromic familial CRCs should also be considered as risk factors for MPCRC. Environmental factors can promote damage to colon mucosae that enable the concurrence of MPCRC. Epigenetics are thought to play a major role in the carcinogenesis of sporadic MPCRC. The methylation state of the dNA depends on multiple environmental factors(e.g., smoking and eating foods cooked at high temperatures), and this can contribute to increasing the MPCRC rate. Certain clinical features may also suggest individual predisposition for MPCRC. different etiopathogenic factors are suspected to be involved in SCRC and MCRC, and different familial vs individual factors may be implicated. MCRC seems to follow a familial pattern, whereas individual factors are more important in SCRC. Further studies must be carried out to know the molecular basis of risks for MPCRC in order to modify, if necessary, its clinical management, especially from a preventive point of view.

Trichomonas vaginalis, a protist parasite of the urogenital tract in humans, is the causative agent of trichomonosis, which in recent years have been associated with the cervical cancer development. In the present study we analyzed the modifications at the junctional complex level of Caco-2 cells after interaction with two isolates of T. vaginalis and the influence of the iron concentration present in the parasite’s culture medium on the interaction effects. Our results show that T. vaginalis adheres to the epithelial cell causing alterations in the junctional complex, such as: (a) a decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance; (b) alteration in the pattern of junctional complex proteins distribution as observed for E-cadherin, occludin and ZO-1; and (c) enlargement of the spaces between epithelial cells. These effects were dependent on (a) the degree of the parasite virulence isolate, (b) the iron concentration in the culture medium, and (c) the expression of adhesin proteins on the parasite surface.

Erectile dysfunction(Ed),a condition closely related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality,is frequently associated with *** this study,we aimed to determine the prevalence of Ed and evaluate the associated risk factors in a cohort of 254 young(18–49 years)nondiabetic obese(body mass index[BMI]≥30 kg m−2)men from primary *** function(International Index of Erectile Function[IIEF-5]questionnaire),quality of life(Aging Males'Symptoms[AMS scale]),and body composition analysis(Tanita MC-180MA)were *** testosterone was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass *** logistic regression analysis was used to study the factors associated with *** prevalence was 42.1%.Subjects with Ed presented higher BMI,waist circumference,number of components of the metabolic syndrome,AMS score,insulin resistance,and a more unfavorable body composition than those without *** logistic regression analysis showed that a pathological AMS score(odds ratio[OR]:4.238,Pdegree of obesity(BMI≥40 kg m−2,OR:2.602,P=0.005,compared with BMI 30–34.9 kg m−2),high-density lipoprotein(HdL)-cholesterol levels(OR:0.956,P=0.004),and age(OR:1.047,P=0.016)were factors independently associated with *** conclusion,we demonstrate that,in a primary care-based cohort of nondiabetic young obese men,Ed affected>40%of subjects.A pathological AMS score,the degree of obesity,and age were positively associated with Ed,while elevated HdL-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with the odds of presenting *** prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term consequences of Ed in this population.

A system for calculating the merchantable volume of oak trees in the northwest of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico

The taper functions of Kozak （1988）, Bi （2000） and Fang et al. （2000） were comparatively analyzed in the present paper to develop a system for calculating the merchantable volume of oaks in the northwestern region of the state of Chihuahua （Mexico）. Taper data corresponding to 298 trees were collected in mixed and uneven-aged pine-oak stands located throughout the study area, and covering the cxisting range of ages, stand densities and sites. Results show that the compatible segmented model developed by Fang et al. （2000） best described the experimental data and is therefore recommended for estimating tree diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for oaks. The equation developed in this study is a fundamental tool for use in forest surveys in the study region and is simple enough to ensure its operational implementation. The results of the statistical analysis show that the equation can be recommended for other regions, although some local adaptations may be needed.
