Polyphenolic composition, antibacterial, modulator and neuroprotective activity of Tarenaya spinosa(Jacq.) Raf.(Cleomaceae)

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity and neuroprotective capacity of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Tarenaya spinosa(T. spinosa) as well as to determine and quantify some of its polyphenols by high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection(HPLC-DAD). Methods: The bacterial escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, grown in Heart Agar Infusion, were tested. The drugs gentamicin, norfloxacin and imipenem were used to evaluate the modulating or antagonistic capacity of the T. spinosa extracts. The extract was analysed by HPLC-DAD to determine the main phenolic compounds. For the cell viability tests, individual heads of the Nauphoeta cinerea arthropod model were removed, homogenized in Trifluoromethyl ketone and centrifuged afterwards. Subsequently, 20 μL of NaN O2 were added to the biological material, except in the control group, to evaluate the protection capacity of the extracts. The homogenate of the insect heads was incubated for 2 h in tubes containing tetrazolium bromide. Results: HPLC-DAD demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of T. spinosa presented caffeic acid as the major compound. The ethanolic extract also showed neuroprotective effects at concentrations ≥ 10 μg/mL, while aqueous extract was shown to have a protective effect only at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. The aqueous extract demonstrated a clinically relevant antibacterial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus multidrug resistant strain-MDR, with MIC 512 μg/m L. However, when the extracts were associated with gentamicin and imipenem, a synergism was detected against Staphylococcus aureus and escherichia coli MDR strains. Conclusions: Although it does not present an antibacterial action, the extracts of T. spinosa can be used in the pharmaceutical industries since its extracts show modulating action of drugs. Besides, these natural products have neuroprotective capacity.

Soil erosion and land degradation are global problems and pose major issues in many countries. Both soil erosion and mass movement are two forms of land degradation and humans play important roles in these geomorphological processes. This paper reviews slope processes associated with mass movement and soil erosion and contributory factors, including physical and human agents. Acting together, these cause diverse geomorphological features. Slope processes are illustrated by reference to case studies from Brazil and UK. The causes and impacts of erosion are discussed, along with appropriate remedial bioengineering methods and the potential of the measures to prevent these types of environmental degradation. Although there are several agents of erosion, water is the most important one. Cultivation can promote soil erosion, due to ploughing and harvesting, which moves soil down slopes. Soil erosion and mass movement data would inform the viability of soil conservation practices. Integrated management of drainage basins offers a Dromising way forward for effective soil conservation and soil remedial bioengineering in Brazil and UK.

To understand the influence of environmental factors on the metabolic diversity of phytochemical compounds from extracts of leaves and bark of Anacardium occidentale,collected in two different geographic areas,ultra-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used,as well as the composition of physicochemical properties of both soils at the collection site(“Lavras da Mangabeira”and“Crato”).It was possible to observe physicochemical differences between the soils of the two collection areas and some *** present granulometry with a sandy texture,with high values of total sand,with acid pH,and variation in porosity *** micronutrients with the highest accumulation in the soil,with emphasis on the predominance of P(Phosphorus)and Al(Aluminium)mainly in the 20-40 cm layer in ***-three phytochemical compounds were identified in the leaf and bark extracts,of which 28 were present in the leaves and 20 in the bark *** this total,13 were present in at least one of the parts of the plant(leaf or bark),and most were present in both Crato and Lavras da Mangabeira,presenting mainly phenolic acids,flavonoids and tannins in all extracts *** extracts showed similarities between the groups of *** together,this study may be relevant to assess environmental influences on the production of secondary metabolites.

In this study, we consider charged massive scalar fields around a Kerr-Sen spacetime. The radial and angular parts of the covariant Klein-Gordon equation are solved in terms of the confluent Heun function. From the exact radial solution, we obtain the Hawking radiation spectrum and discuss its resonant frequencies. The massless case of the resonant frequencies is also examined.

Purpose: The adaptation of BPI-B into North/Northeast of Brazil. The purpose of this study was the translation and adaptation of the BPI to Portuguese language, as spoken in Brazil, aiming at its posterior usage to measure both intensity and interference of pain in cancer patients’ life. Methods: The BPI-B was developed from the original BPI, using back-translation and committee review. The Back Translation was compared to the original BPI, as a result, the North/Northeast Brazilian version proved to have the same goals, and is similar to other current versions, observing its psychometrics properties. The inventory presented a final sample of 475 patients, whose average age was 54.37 years old (DP = 14.56), most female (58.9%). One hundred ninety-six patients in elementary school took part. It had its objective to group multiple indicators that responded to validation, precision and parsimony criteria. The patients answered the BPI at the very moment they were diagnosed as cancer cases. All of them were above 18 years old and they were also undergoing treatment at Cancer Ambulatory in a Hospital in Ceará, Brazil. The retest was carried, after about a month of the first application. In order to verify the reliability of inventory adaptation, the exploratory factorial analysis was used as the oblique rotation axis. Results: exploratory factor analysis confirmed two underlying dimensions, pain severity, and pain interference, with Cronbach’s α 0.833 and 0.733, respectively. Conclusion: A proposition of a north/northeast Brazilian version of BPI turned out to be adequate, gathering evidences of adaptation and internal consistency similar to already validated versions.
