The development of the giant magnetostrictive rare earth-iron materials is reported from their discovery in the early 1970's to their present use in transducer and sensor applications. Fifteen broad market areas, ranging from miniature devices in the medical industry to high powder sonar and seismic sources have been identified. A world-wide customer base in these high technology fields has been established and the superior properties of these materials are responsible for the rapid growth of the magnetostrictive transducer industries. The critical design criteria that lead to efficient devices are reported and the performance of several of these products is presented. The key patents associated with these giant magnetostrictive materials and devices using these materials are reviewed. The present and future of these technologies in reference to commercialization, market growth and the impact on the many transduction industries are discussed. (Author abstract) 9 Refs.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC) is the most prevalent and most commonly studied oral cancer. However, there is a void regarding the role that the oral microbiome may play in OSCC. Although the relationship between microbial community composition and OSCC has been thoroughly investigated, microbial profiles of the human microbiome in cancer are understudied. Here we performed a small pilot study of community-wide metatranscriptome analysis to profile mRNA expression in the entire oral microbiome in OSCC to reveal molecular functions associated with this disease. Fusobacteria showed a statistically significantly higher number of transcripts at tumour sites and tumour-adjacent sites of cancer patients compared to the healthy controls analysed. Regardless of the community composition, specific metabolic signatures were consistently found in disease. Activities such as iron ion transport, tryptophanase activity, peptidase activities and superoxide dismutase were over-represented in tumour and tumour-adjacent samples when compared to the healthy controls. The expression of putative virulence factors in the oral communities associated with OSCC showed that activities related to capsule biosynthesis, flagellum synthesis and assembly, chemotaxis, iron transport, haemolysins and adhesins were upregulated at tumour sites. Moreover, activities associated with protection against reactive nitrogen intermediates, chemotaxis, flagellar and capsule biosynthesis were also upregulated in non-tumour sites of cancer patients. Although they are preliminary, our results further suggest that Fusobacteria may be the leading phylogenetic group responsible for the increase in expression of virulence factors in the oral microbiome of OSCC patients.

Objective： To evaluate the treatment effect of acupuncture on patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia（ITN） by case-control longitudinal blinded study. Methods： Sixty ITN patients and 30 healthy subjects were included. The ITN patients were randomly assigned to acupuncture group（15 cases）, sham-acupuncture group（15 cases） and carbamazepine group（30 cases）, respectively. Clinical orofacial evaluation（including pain intensity and medication doses）, research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders（RdC/TMd） and Helkimo indexes（for functional evaluation of the masticatory system）, and quantitative sensory testing for sensory thresholds（gustative, olfactory, cold, warm, touch, vibration and superficial and deep pain） were evaluated before treatment, immediately after treatment, and 6 months after treatment. Results： The mean pain intensity by the Visual Analogue Scale only decreased in the acupuncture group at the last evaluation（P=0.012）. Patients in the sham-acupuncture group had an increase in carbamazepine doses according to the prescriptions（P〈0.01）. There was a reduction in secondary myofascial pain and mandibular limitations at the acupuncture and sham-acupuncture groups, however only the acupuncture group kept the changes after 6 months（P〈0.01, P=0.023）. There was a decrease in mechanical thresholds in the acupuncture group（tactile, P〈0.01; vibration, P=0.027） and an increase in deep pain thresholds in both acupuncture and sham-acupuncture groups（P=0.013）. Conclusion： Acupuncture can be an option in the treatment of ITN due to its analgesic effect in both ITN and secondary myofascial pain associated with it.

AIMTo analyze the research activity on liver abscess (LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the *** identified all documents using the medical subject heading “LA” indexed in the MEdLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest (case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify the main topic areas of *** search yielded a total of 1278 documents, showing a stable scientific production over the study period and a marked multidisciplinary nature. The research was dominated by case reports (65.9% of the documents analyzed). In terms of geographic distribution, researchers from the United States led in the number of signatures (n = 229), followed by those from Taiwan (n = 185), India (n = 145), Japan (n = 144), South Korea (n = 100), and China (n = 84). With regard to amebic LA, the top-producing countries were India and Mexico (n = 69 each), followed by the United States (n = 29). In the case of pyogenic LA, Taiwan Residents researchers led scientific production (n = 71), followed by the United States (n = 39) and China (n = 29). The most active areas of research in the field are diagnosis via computerized tomography scan, differential diagnosis with regard to liver cancer, treatment with antimicrobial agents, and Klebsiella infections (including bacteremia).CONCLUSIONClinical case reports associated with diagnosis and treatment are the main topic of study, highlighting the importance of this document type in advancing knowledge.

Laminated composite materials are widely implemented in several engineering constructions. For its relative light weight, these materials are suitable for aerospace, military, marine, and automotive structural applications. To obtain safe and economical structures, the modelling analysis accuracy is highly relevant. Since meshless methods in the recent years achieved a remarkable progress in computational mechanics, the present work uses one of the most flexible and stable interpolation meshless technique available in the literature—the Radial Point Interpolation Method(RPIM).Here, a 2 d approach is considered to numerically analyse composite laminated beams. Both the meshless formulation and the equilibrium equations ruling the studied physical phenomenon are presented with detail. Several benchmark beam examples are studied and the results are compared with exact solutions available in the literature and the results obtained from a commercial finite element software. The results show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed numeric technique.

We consider the 1-d motion of an electron under a periodic force and take into account the effect of radiation reaction dissipation force on its motion, using the formulation of novel radiation reaction force as a function of the external force expression. Two cases are considered: a simple sinusoidal time depending force, and sinusoidal electromagnetic force with position and time dependence. The purpose of the study of these cases is to bring about a way to find an experimental study to determine the validity of this novel approach for the radiation reaction force. We found that the difference of the normalized (with respect the speed of light) velocities, with and without radiation reaction, is quite small between 10-31 to 10-14 for intensities on the electric field of 10-8 to 1 dynes/ues, which may represent some concern to measure experimentally.
