Key innovations in ruminant evolution: a paleontological perspective

Key innovations are newly acquired structures that permit the performance of a new function and open new adaptive zones,and are,therefore,of paramount significance for understanding the history of the Ruminantia,particularly its diversification through the *** we review and discuss what is known about these evolutionary novelties,with special emphasis on the appearance and evolution of cranial appendages and high-crowned(or hypsodont)*** appendages probably favored the diversification of pecorans by being structures strongly related to sexual selection,whereas the acquisition of hypsodont teeth could have expanded potential dietary breadth and allowed species to extend diets into the grazing range without eliminating browsing as a potential *** analyzed in conjunction with patterns of faunal diversity and in the context of climatic changes,it seems that the overall view that ruminant cranial appendages and hypsodonty may have started responding to increased patterns of seasonality and the opening-up of ecosystems is roughly ***stead,they occurred through several distinct pulses and varied widely among *** review is,to our knowledge,the first to highlight that the evolution of these innovations has been far from constant and uniform through ***,we identify that both a first attempt to increase hypsodonty starting in the early Miocene and a first evolution of antlers and pronghorns were interrupted as a consequence of wide climatic fluctuations in the early-middle Miocene transition.

Calculations of Optical Rotation from density Functional Theory

density function theory calculations of frequency-dependent optical rotations [α]ω for three rigid chiral molecules are reported. Calculations have been carried out at the sodium d line frequency, using the AdZP basis set and a wide variety of functionals. Gauge-invariant atomic orbitals are used to guarantee origin-independent values of [ω]d. In addition, study of geometry dependence of [ω]d is reported. Using the geometries optimized at the B3LYP/AdZP level, the mean absolute deviation of B3LYP/AdZP and experimental laid values yields 60.1°/（dm g/cm^3）. According to our knowledge, this value has not been achieved until now with any other model.

Experimental and numerical analysis of multi-chamber oscillating water column devices

A review of multi-chamber oscillating water column(OWC)device designs is *** significant variations of these devices are discussed,onshore OWC(OOWC)and a floating OWC(FOWC).The efficiency results of several theoretical studies based on low-and high-fidelity numerical models are presented and compared with the model scale ***,low-fidelity numerical models are very fast to run,but their accuracy is limited compared with high-fidelity numerical *** model experiments usually give results much more accurate than numerical models,but they need adequate facilities and are very *** the case of the OOWC,all models show a similar trend of total efficiency,but while the analytical model shows a maximum value of around 90%efficiency,the CFd model shows 60%,and the experiments only go up to 40%.The main reason is connected with the mathematical simplifications and assumptions that do not represent all the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic processes between the water,air,and *** the case of the FOWC,interestingly,the experimental results show a maximum efficiency of almost 100%,while the analytical model only predicts a maximum of 80%.The efficiency seems highly dependent on the heave motion resonance of the entire device,where the analytical model fails to predict this natural frequency.

Chlorophyll, anthocyanin, and gas exchange changes assessed by spectroradiometry in Fragaria chiloensis under salt stress

Chlorophyll and anthocyanin contents provide a valuable indicator of the status of a plant’s physiology, but to be more widely utilized it needs to be assessed easily and non‐destructively. This is particularly evident in terms of assessing and exploiting germplasm for plant‐breeding programs. We report, for the first time, experiments with Fragaria chiloensis（L.）duch. and the estimation of the effects of response to salinity stress（0, 30, and 60 mmol NaCl/L） in terms of these pigments content and gas exchange. It is shown that both pigments（which interestingly, themselves show a high correlation） give a good indication of stress response. Both pigments can be accurately predicted using spectral reflectance indices（SRI）;however, the accuracy of the predictions was slightly improved using multilinear regression analysis models and genetic algorithm analysis. Specifically for chlorophyll content, unlike other species, the use of published SRI gave better indications ofstress response than Normalized difference Vegetation *** effect of salt on gas exchange is only evident at the highest concentration and some SRI gave better prediction performance than the known Photochemical Reflectance Index. This information will therefore be useful for identifying tolerant genotypes to salt stress for incorporation in breeding programs.

We review the case of a 74-year-old patient with ad-vanced colon cancer who suffered recurrent bouts of hypoglycemia. A state of inappropriate, non-suppressed hyperinsulinism in the presence of severe hypoglycemia was diagnosed. We finally discuss the known mecha-nisms behind fasting hypoglycemia in patients with ad-vanced cancer, the diagnosis, and possible treatments of this rare paraneoplastic endocrine complication.

Evaluation of redox-sensitive metals in marine surface sediments influenced by the oxygen minimum zone of the Humboldt Current System, Northern Chile

Upwelling coastal systems can be used to understand how dissolved oxygen and biological productivity control the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in marine *** aluminium(Al),cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),molybdenum(Mo),vanadium(V),total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN)and total sulfur(TS)contents in surficial sediment collected from different water depths(30,70,and 120 m)in three northern Chilean bays influenced by coastal upwelling and oxygen minimum zones(OMZs)were *** component analysis(PCA),cluster analysis,and Spearman’s rank correlation were used to identify the mechanisms responsible for the redox-sensitive metal *** content of redox-sensitive metals and organic components in sediment increased with increasing water column depth,whereas lithogenic metals *** the Mejillones del Sur and Caldera bays,the enrichment factors of the redox-sensitive metals showed enrichment for all metals with *** Cd and V enrichments are mainly the product of biogenic flow to the seabed,and the Mo and Ni enrichments are due to preservation under low subsurface oxygen *** reduction is not an important mechanism in the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in the sediment of the three *** PCA showed that the behaviors of the redox-sensitive metals and organic components reflect differences in the effects of the OMZ in sediment along the coast of northern Chile,with a more intense OMZ in Mejillones del Sur bay and weaker OMZs in Caldera and Inglesa ***,the high degree of enrichment in redox-sensitive metals in Caldera Bay can be attributed to the intense activity of the mining industry near the bay,a situation that produces geochemical behavior similar to that observed in Mejillones del Sur Bay.

Presbyopia still remains the last frontier of refractive *** surgical management is under constant evolution due to the limitations that exist today with respect to its management,which is probably in relation with the multifactorial basis in which presbyopia is clinically developed in the *** currently,virtually all surgical techniques that have been proposed for its correction are based on the induction of pseudoaccommodation in the presbyopic eye,including ***,the real restoration of accommodation is more complex,and it has been tried by the use of different,so called,“accommodative”pseudophakic intraocular lenses(AIOL).Overall,the reported results with these lenses by independent authors have been modest in relation with the restoration of the accommodative power of the eye and these modest benefits are usually lost with time due to the long term changes in the capsular *** fact made these lenses to be almost abandoned in the last few years,but there are currently other AIOL models being used with innovative mechanisms of action and different anatomical support outside the capsular bag that offer encouraging preliminary results that could bring a new potential of application to these types of *** this article,we will update the modern refractive surgeon about the fundamentals and provide updated information about the outcomes of AIOLs by reviewing the concept of accommodation,the different attempts that have been accomplished in the past,their demonstrated published results in human clinical trials,and the future alternatives that may arrive in the near future.

The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of serum vitamin d levels on semen quality and testosterone *** is a crosssectional study conducted at Androscience,Science and Innovation Center in Andrology and High-Complex Clinical and Andrology Laboratory in Sao Paulo,Brazil,with 508 male patients,aged 18-60 years,from 2007 to *** parameters and serum sexual hormones were correlated with serum vitamin d concentrations in 260 men selected by strict selection *** were divided into normozoospermic group(NZG,n=124)and a group with seminal abnormalities(SAG,n=136).Evaluation included complete physical examination,past medical history,habits and lifestyle factors,two complete seminal analysis with sperm functional tests,serum levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin d_(3)(25(OH)Vd_(3)),total and free testosterone,luteinizing hormone(LH),follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG),total cholesterol,homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)index,and *** mean concentration of 25(OH)Vd_(3)was significantly lower in the SAG(Pd positively correlated with all baseline seminal parameters and total testosterone *** addition,serum vitamin d_(3)concentration was found to be positively correlated with sperm concentration(β=2.103;Pd strict morphology(β=0.056;P=0.006),regardless of other *** is the first comparative study to address the issue of serum vitamin d_(3)content between normozoospermic patients and those with sperm *** clearly demonstrates a direct and positive relationship between serum vitamin d level and overall semen quality,male reproductive potential,and testosterone levels.
