Could Low Hdl-Cholesterol Levels Be an Unvalued Predictor of Cancer Risk?: A Retrospective Case Study

Background: The relationship between serum lipid profile levels and cancer risk remained uncertain. Recently, it had been reported a significant inverse association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and the risk of incident cancer that was independent of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), age or sex. Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the behavior of HDL in cancer patients and in healthy population. Methods: We created a retrospectively search strategy in the laboratory information system (LIS). We filtered and searched those patients with CEA within 5 - 20 ng/ml and any value of HDL and corroborated the presence of cancer (Group 1 (G1)) or not (Group 2 (G2)). Moreover, we searched a control group (patients in outpatient oncology clinic) to observe the values of HDL. Comparisons and statistical logistic regression models were applied to link the levels of this biomarkers and cancer risk. Results: We examined 852 valid patients, median age 62 (50 - 73) years. Within the search strategy group, G2 showed highest levels of HDL (54 (43 - 67) mg/dl) and lowest CEA levels (6.7 (5.7 - 8.4) ng/ml) comparing with G1: HDL (47 (37 - 60) mg/dl) and the CEA (7.9 (6.2 - 10.9) ng/ml);p p r2: 0.092;p p = 0.001)] and CEA [OR: 1.115 (1.060 - 1.174), (p nd they were confirmed as independent predictors of cancer. Conclusion: Our findings confirmed the inverse association of HDL levels between healthy populations and were diagnosed with cancer. Moreover, in a random population, patients with cancer presented lower HDL values compared to those without cancer. Therefore, it could demonstrate the possible positive predictive value of low HDL related to cancer risk.

Differential Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Three Purified Omega Unsaturated Fatty Acids on Collagen-Induced Arthritis in Mouse

Background: The Mediterranean Diet (MD) has been linked to a reduced risk of developing degenerative diseases, including atherosclerosis, heart stroke, diabetes, arthritis and cancer. However, only a few scientific investigations have attempted to validate this impression. The ingredients of the MD include significant amounts of omega (ω3, ω6, and ω9) unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs). A few studies of these UFAs in the prevention or treatment of arthritis have yielded controversial results, but a general belief regarding their beneficial effects has prevailed. Objective: To investigate the effects of three relevant UFAs, namely Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), Arachidonic Acid (AA), and Oleic Acid (OA) (ω3, ω6, and ω9, respectively), in the development of arthritis using a murine model of Collagen-Induced Arthritis (CIA). Methods: DBA-1 mice were immunized with chicken collagen type II (CII) and were subsequently treated with ω-UFAs for 53 days. Dexamethasone (DEXA) was used as a positive anti-inflammatory agent. The effect of the treatments was evaluated through several parameters: inflammation indices, antibody levels, cell prolifera- tion, and histopathological findings. Results and Conclusion: The anti-inflammatory effect of the tested substances was inversely correlated with the histopathological findings: a greater anti- inflammatory effect was associated with less articular damage. Oleic acid (ω9) was the most efficient anti-inflammatory UFA, followed by DHA and then AA. DEXA completely inhibited the development of arthritis, whereas the untreated CII-immunized mice developed the most severe articular damage. DBA-1 mice with CII-induced arthritis constitute an adequate model for the study of arthritis and its treatment.

AIMTo analyze the diagnostic yield (DY), therapeutic impact (TI) and safety of capsule endoscopy (CE).METHODSThis is a multi-centre, observational, analytical, retrospective study. A total of 163 patients with suspicion of celiac disease (CD) (mean age = 46.4 ± 17.3 years, 68.1% women) who underwent CE from 2003 to 2015 were included. Patients were divided into four groups: seronegative CD with atrophy (Group-I, n = 19), seropositive CD without atrophy (Group-II, n = 39), contraindication to gastroscopy (Group-III, n = 6), seronegative CD without atrophy, but with a compatible context (Group-Iv, n = 99). DY, TI and the safety of CE were *** overall DY was 54% and the final diagnosis was villous atrophy (n = 65, 39.9%), complicated CD (n = 12, 7.4%) and other enteropathies (n = 11, 6.8%; 8 Crohn’s). DY for groups I to Iv was 73.7%, 69.2%, 50% and 44.4%, respectively. Atrophy was located in duodenum in 24 cases (36.9%), diffuse in 19 (29.2%), jejunal in 11 (16.9%), and patchy in 10 cases (15.4%). Factors associated with a greater DY were positive serology (68.3% vs 49.2%, P = 0.034) and older age (P = 0.008). On the other hand, neither sex nor clinical presentation, family background, positive histology or HLA status were associated with DY. CE results changed the therapeutic approach in 71.8% of the cases. Atrophy was associated with a greater TI (92.3% vs 45.3%, P nd 81.9% of the patients responded to diet. There was one case of capsule retention (0.6%). Agreement between CE findings and subsequent histology was 100% for diagnosing normal/other conditions, 70% for suspected CD and 50% for complicated *** has a high DY in cases of suspicion of CD and it leads to changes in the clinical course of the disease. CE is safe procedure with a high degree of concordance with histology and it helps in the differential diagnosis of CD.

Implementation of the Hough Transform for Iris Detection and Segmentation

The iris is used as a reference for the study of unique biometric marks in people. The analysis of how to extract the iris characteristic information represents a fundamental challenge in image analysis, due to the implications it presents: detection of relevant information, data coding schemes, etc. For this reason, in the search for extraction of useful and characteristic information, approximations have been proposed for its analysis. In this article, it is presented a scheme to extract the relevant information based on the Hough transform. This transform helps to find primitive geometries in the irises, which are used to characterize each one of these. The results of the implementation of the algorithm of the Hough transform applied to the location and segmentation of the iris by means of its circumference are presented in the paper. Two public databases of iris images were used: UBIRIS v2 and CASIA-Irisv4, which were acquired under the same conditions and controlled environments. In the pre-processing stage the edges are found from the noise elimination in the image through the Canny detector. Subsequently, to the images of the detected edges, the Hough transform is applied to the disposition of the geometries detected.

ng>Aim:ng> To compare and analyze dose constraints and target coverage results and to reduce Bladder Wall (Bwall) v18.12 for prostate Stereotactic-Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) when Seminal vesicles (SSvv) are included or not. Several indicators based on intersection volumes are obtained to predict constraint fulfillment. ng>Background:ng> Due to prostate’s low alpha-beta ratio and the possibility of increasing the therapeutic ratio several moderate and extreme hypofractionation schemes have been proposed. The scheme selected was a fivefraction urethra-sparing prostate SBRT. ng>Materials and Methods:ng> 150 patients divided into two groups according to the inclusion of SSvv in PTv or not were analyzed. Histograms, average values, standard deviations and degrees of fulfillment were obtained for each constraint or goal and group. A possible reduction of the Bwall v18.12 was addressed by re-optimizing fifty randomly chosen patients. Predictors of constraint fulfilling were obtained by using the intersections of Bwall and Rectum Wall (Rwall) with the PTv. ng>Results:ng> Significant differences in Rwall v32.62 and v29 were obtained when evaluating the influence of SSvv inclusion. A reduction of 12% in the Bwall v18.12 constraint was achieved without compromising coverage and OARs doses. no dependence on the inclusion of SSvv was found. ng>Conclusions:ng> Statistically significant differences have been found in Rwall intermediate-dose constraint when SSvv was included. A reduction of 12% in the Bwall v18.12 constraint has been achieved without compromising the PTv coverage and the rest of OARs constraints. Constraint fulfillment predictors could be useful to evaluate the feasibility of prostate SBRT prior to the planning process for every single patient.

The industrial adoption of microbial electrosynthesis(MES)is hindered by high overpotentials deriving from low electrolyte conductivity and inefficient cell *** this study,a mixed microbial consortium originating from an anaerobic digester operated under saline conditions(∼13 g L^(−1)naCl)was adapted for acetate production from bicarbonate in galvanostatic(0.25 mA cm^(−2))H-type cells at 5,10,15,or 20 g L^(−1)naCl *** acetogenic communities were successfully enriched only at 5 and 10 g L^(−1)naCl,revealing an inhibitory threshold of about 6 g L^(−1)na^(+).The enriched planktonic communities were then used as inoculum for 3D printed,three-chamber cells equipped with a gas diffusion *** cells were fed with CO_(2)gas and operated galvanostatically(0.25 or 1.00 mA cm^(−2)).The highest production rate of 55.4 g m^(−2) d^(−1)(0.89 g L^(−1)d^(−1)),with 82.4%Coulombic efficiency,was obtained at 5 g L^(−1)naCl concentration and 1 mA cm^(−2)applied current,achieving an average acetate production of 44.7 kg MWh−*** electron microscopy and 16S rRnA sequencing analysis confirmed the formation of a cathodic biofilm dominated by Acetobacterium ***,three 3D printed cells were hydraulically connected in series to simulate an MES stack,achieving three-fold production rates than with the single cell at 0.25 mA cm^(−2).This confirms that three-chamber MES cells are an efficient and scalable technology for CO_(2)bio-electro recycling to acetate and that moderate saline conditions(5 g L^(−1)naCl)can help reduce their power demand while preserving the activity of acetogens.
