Development of a soy-Based synbiotic Beverage

Nowadays consumers seek foods that not only provide basic nutrition but also contain compounds that contribute to health. Thus, different products have been designed to meet this demand, especially those with probiotic and prebiotic characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate different formulations of a soy-based synbiotic beverage. The composition and process conditions were defined using a Placket & Burman factorial design in which the independent variables were process temperature, concentrations of the soy hydrosoluble extract and fructooligosaccharides (FOs) and the initial concentration of the probiotics Bifidobaterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. Paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Changes to the product by addition of sucrose, streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus were also studied. Response parameters were: pH, cell concentration (plate counting), and quantification of fructooligosaccharides, acetic acid and lactic acid. The specific growth rate (μx) and change in cell count (Δx) were determined in each formulation. The soybean hydrosoluble extract was considered a good substrate for beverage production;FOs had a greater effect at lower concentrations. At the end of all fermentation tests the total probiotic count was greater than 7 log CFU/mL, meeting the legal requirements of a functional food. Lower temperatures were better for the growth of probiotics. The addition of sucrose resulted in a lower consumption of FOs by the fermenting microorganisms, while the presence of streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus represented little change concerning the evaluated characteristics. Therefore, according to the results of this study, the production of a soy-based symbiotic fermented beverage can be performed using soybean hydrosoluble extract at 10% (w/v), fructooligosaccharides at about 3% (w/v), sucrose at 12% (w/v), and the process temperature should

Despite the National Policy for solid Waste(PNRs)in 2010,nothing has changed to waste disposal in *** to reach 100%of all Municipal solid Waste(MsW)collected and treated in landfills by Aug.2nd,2014,until nowadays,42%of this total remains in *** the most important national economic region treating its urban waste in landfills,what it has is no more than 4%of recycling and its landfills reaching the *** other ones is getting harder year by year,due to water reservoirs around the region,high freight costs,waste disposal and the severe control of emissions associated with its *** article comes to break the paradigm of investment and profitability proposing an alternative to the land-use,achieving higher rates of *** economic viability,carried out through well-known financial variables and Monte Carlo analysis,has taken into account proven local waste characteristics and market prices for recyclables and energy without *** considered a proposal highly intensive in capital and people,the revenues from the sales would be enough to guarantee the viability of 100%equity with IRR of 33.7%and ROI of 24.5%per year within the confidence of 99%.

Can rainfall seasonality trigger soil water repellency in a tropical riparian forest?

Though riparian areas generally have a shallow water table and higher soil moisture compared to up slope areas,climatic seasonality may trigger water repellency in tropical riparian forests,which,if persistent,could negatively affect essential ecosystem functions related to water resources protection such as reduced overland-flow,sediment transport,and nutrient *** objective of this study was to answer the following:can tropical riparian forests develop water repellency?If so,does water repellency affect infiltration on a seasonal basis?For this,water repellency and infiltration were measured in a grid of 72points during a dry and a wet month of a tropical riparian forest with a shallow water table in a region with highly marked climatic *** repellency and infiltration were significantly different between the wet and dry *** repellency affected negatively infiltration in the dry month,its effect in the wet month was *** a result,a higher infiltration capacity was observed over the wet *** research has claimed that the development and persistence of repellency in soils could promote other hydrological processes such as overland *** findings shown here demonstrate that such phenomenon does not persist longer than the dry season.

Landslide susceptibility mapping using the infinite slope,sHALsTAB,sINMAP,and TRIGRs models in serra do Mar,Brazil

slope failure triggered by heavy rainfall is very common in tropical and subtropical regions and a cause of major social and economic *** susceptibility maps can be generated using geographical information systems(GIs)and limit equilibrium slope stability models coupled or not to hydrological *** study investigated the efficacy of four models used for slope stability analysis in predicting landslide-susceptible areas in a GIs *** selected models are the infinite slope,the shallow slope stability model(sHALsTAB),the stability index mapping(sINMAP),and the transient rainfall infiltration and grid-based regional slope-stability(TRIGRs).For comparisons,the authors(a)included the infinite slope equation in all models,(b)clearly defined input parameters and failure triggering mechanisms for each simulation(soil depth,water table height,rainfall intensity),(c)determined appropriate values for each model to obtain stability levels that represented similar hydrogeotechnical conditions,and(d)considered upper-third areas of landslide scars to estimate the reliability of susceptibility maps using validation *** intense rainfall event occurred in serra do Mar,Brazil in January 2014 triggered hundreds of landslides and was used for back analysis and evaluation of the slope stability analysis *** rainfall intensity is not considered,the four models produced very similar *** most reliable landslide susceptibility map was generated using TRIGRs and considering the granite residual granite soils geological-geotechnical unit,subjected to a rainfall intensity of 210 mm for 2 h under unsaturated conditions.

Water depths and flow velocities decisively influence the damage caused by flash *** Information system(GIs)is a powerful and useful tool,allowing the spatial analysis of results obtained by hydraulic modelling,namely from the HEC-RAs/HEC-GeoRAs *** GIs spatial analysis performed in this study seeks to explain and quantify the spatial relationships between the stream channel features and flow components during flash flood *** these relationships are generically known,there are few studies exploring this subject in different geographic contexts.A 1D hydraulic model was applied in a small watershed in Portugal,providing good results in the definition of floodable areas,water depths and longitudinal *** direct relationship was found between water depths and velocities in the floodable areas;however,negative strong correlations were found between the two flow components along the stream *** slope,channel and flood width,and roughness prove to be highly relevant on the longitudinal variations of water depths and velocities and on the location of maximum *** peak discharges and return periods(R;)can change the relationships between water depths and velocities at the same *** can be improved with more accurate elevation data for stream channels and floodplains.

Reconfigurable MIMO-based self-powered battery-less light communication system

simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (sLIPT), co-existing with optical wireless communication,holds an enormous potential to provide continuous charging to remote Internet of Things (IoT) devices while ensuringconnectivity. Combining sLIPT with an omnidirectional receiver, we can leverage a higher power budget whilemaintaining a stable connection, a major challenge for optical wireless communication systems. Here, we design amultiplexed sLIPT-based system comprising an array of photodetectors (PDs) arranged in a 3 × 3 configuration. Thesystem enables decoding information from multiple light beams while simultaneously harvesting energy. The PDs canswiftly switch between photoconductive and photovoltaic modes to maximize information transfer rates and provideon-demand energy harvesting. Additionally, we investigated the ability to decode information and harvest energywith a particular quadrant set of PDs from the array, allowing beam tracking and spatial diversity. The design wasexplored in a smaller version for higher data rates and a bigger one for higher power harvesting. We report a selfpoweringdevice that can achieve a gross data rate of 25.7 Mbps from a single-input single-output (sIsO) and an 85.2Mbps net data rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration. Under a standard AMT1.5 illumination,the device can harvest up to 87.33 mW, around twice the power needed to maintain the entire system. Our workpaves the way for deploying autonomous IoT devices in harsh environments and their potential use in spaceapplications.

Interference of iron as a coagulant on MIB removal by powdered activated carbon adsorption for low turbidity waters

Powered activated carbon （PAC） is widely used in water treatment plants to minimize odors in drinking water. This study investigated the removal of 2-methylisoborneol （MIB） by PAC adsorption, combined with coagulation using iron as a coagulant. The adsorption and coagulation process were studied through different case scenarios of jar tests. The analysis evaluated the effect of PAC dosing in the liquid phase immediately before or after the coagulant addition. Ferric sulphate was used as the coagulant with dosages from 10 to 30 mg/L, and PAC dosages varied from 10 to 40 mg/L. The highest MIB removal efficiency （about 70%） was achieved without the coagulant addition and with the highest PAC dosage （40 mg/L）. Lower MIB removal efficiencies were observed in the presence of coagulant, showing a clear interference of the iron precipitate or coagulant in the adsorption process. The degree of interference of the coagulation process in the MIB removal was proportional to the ratio of ferric hydroxide mass to the PAC mass. For both cases of PAC dosing, upstream and downstream of the coagulant injection point, the MIB removal efficiency was similar. However, MIB removal efficiency was 15% lower when compared with experiments without the coagulant application. This interference in the MIB adsorption occurs potentially because the coagulant coats the surface of the carbon and interferes with the MIB coming in contact with the carbon＇s surface and pores. This constraint requires an increase of the PAC dosage to provide the same efficiency observed without coagulation.

Its structure derives from multipotent precursors, as shown through clonal analysis of retinal cell lineage. There is a large demand for models able to predict the future capacity retention and internal resistance(IR)of Lithium-ion battery cells with as little testing as *** provide a data-centric model accurately predicting a cell’s entire capacity and IR trajectory from one single cycle of input *** represents a significant reduction in the amount of input data needed over previous *** approach characterises the capacity and IR curve through a small number of key points,which,once predicted and interpolated,describe the full *** this approach the remaining useful life is predicted with an 8.6%mean absolute percentage error when the input-cycle is within the first 100 cycles.
