Ecology　of　the　marine　cladoceran　Penilia　avirostris　Dana　in　Tolo　Harbour，Hong　Kong

Seasonal abundance of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris was studied in the Tolo Harbour,Hong Kong,from November 1987 to December *** occurred in plankton throughout the year,but no clear seasonal pattern could be identified. In general,densities were the highest in the Tolo Channel and decreased progressively towards the inner parts of the Tolo *** showed marked seasonal variations in body size and brood size. Body length of P. avirostris ranged from 0.3 to 1.0mm. Average body length was greatest on March 1988 and January 1989, and the smallest in May 1988, although no clear seasonal trends could be detected. Brood size of P. avirostris ranged from 1 to 13 over the study period with a mean of 5.6.A significant positive relationship was found between body length and brood size. Diel vertical migration and diel feeding pattern of P. avirostris was followed over a 24 h period from July 31 to August 1, 1991 at a station near the southern edge of the dam of the Plover Cove Reservoir. *** Performed typical nocturnal vertical migration. Although animals were seldom found below 10 m during either day or night,a greater fraction of the population was found in the upper 1 to 3 m at night than during the day.A diel cycle in gut pigment content was observed in ***. Gut pigment content was low during the day and increased sharply during the first 2 h after *** pigment content at 21:00 and 03:00 was about 2 times higher than average daytime *** a concentration was the highest near the surface and de creased towards the bottom, but water collected at 16 m still contained 1.79 ng/cm3 Chl.a. Because P. avirostris were usually found within the upper 10 m,we believe that the observed diel change in gut pigment content was like ly the result of a real diel feeding rhythm, and was probably not the result of individual animals moving in and out of the food-rich layer.

Ray-space based arbitrary viewpoint rendering without complex object segmentation or model construction is the main technology to realize Free Viewpoint Video(FVV) system for complex scenes. Ray-space interpolation and compression are two key techniques for the solution. In this paper,correlation among multiple epipolar lines in ray-space data is analyzed,and a new method of ray-space interpolation with multi-epipolar lines matching is proposed. Comparing with the pixel-based matching interpolation method and the block-based matching interpolation method,the proposed method can achieve higher Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR) in interpolating rayspace data and rendering arbitrary viewpoint images.

Extending the nuclear chart by continuum:From oxygen to titanium

Nuclear masses ranging from O to Ti isotopes are systematically investigated with relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov(RCHB)theory,which can provide a proper treatment of pairing correlations in the presence of the *** O to Ti isotopes,there are 402 nuclei predicted to be bound by the density functional *** the 234 nuclei with mass measured,the root mean square(rms)deviation is 2.23 *** is found that the proton drip-lines predicted with various mass models are roughly the same and basically agree with the *** neutron drip-lines predicted,however,are quite *** to the continuum couplings,the neutron drip-line nuclei predicted are extended further neutron-rich than other mass *** comparison with finite-range droplet model(FRDM),the neutron drip-line nucleus predicted by RCHB theory has respectively2(O),10(Ne),10(Na),6(Mg),8(Al),6(Si),8(P),6(S),14(K),10(Ca),10(Sc),and 12(Ti)more neutrons.

A Nearly Analytic Discrete Method for One-dimensional Unsteady Convection-dominated Diffusion Equations

In this paper, a nearly analytic discretization method for one-dimensional linear unsteady convection-dominated diffusion equations and viscous Burgers’ equation as one of the nonlinear equation is considered. In the case of linear equations, we find the local truncation error of the scheme is O(τ 2 + h4) and consider the stability analysis of the method on the basis of the classical von Neumann’s theory. In addition, the nearly analytic discretization method for the one-dimensional viscous Burgers’ equation is also constructed. The numerical experiments are performed for several benchmark problems presented in some literatures to illustrate the theoretical results. Theoretical and numerical results show that our method is to be higher accurate and nonoscillatory and might be helpful particularly in computations for the unsteady convection-dominated diffusion problems.

Independent human living systems require smart,intelligent,and sustainable online monitoring so that an individual can be assisted *** from ambient assisted living,the task of monitoring human activities plays an important role in different fields including virtual reality,surveillance security,and human interaction with *** systems have been developed in the past with the use of various wearable inertial sensors and depth cameras to capture the human *** this paper,we propose multiple methods such as random occupancy pattern,spatio temporal cloud,waypoint trajectory,Hilbert transform,Walsh Hadamard transform and bone pair descriptors to extract optimal features corresponding to different human *** features sets are then normalized using min-max normalization and optimized using the Fuzzy optimization ***,the Masi entropy classifier is applied for action recognition and *** have been performed on three challenging datasets,namely,UTDMHAD,50 Salad,and *** experimental evaluation,the proposed novel approach of recognizing human actions has achieved an accuracy rate of 90.1%with UTD-MHAD dataset,90.6%with 50 Salad dataset,and 89.5%with CMU-MMAC *** experimental results validated the proposed system.

The influence of γ′ precipitate on the acoustic nonlinearity is investigated for a nickel-based superalloy, which is subjected to creep deformation. During creep deformation, the cuboidal γ′ precipitate is preferentially coarsened in a direction perpendicular to the applied stress axis. The length and shape factor of the γ′ precipitate increase with creep time. The increase of relative acoustic nonlinearity with increasing fraction of creep life is discussed in relation to the rafting of γ′ precipitate, which is closely related to the scattering and distortion of the acoustic wave

Effect of hyperthermia on calbindin-D 28k immunoreactivity in the hippocampal formation following transient global cerebral ischemia in gerbils

Calbindin D-28K （CB）, a Ca2＋-binding protein, maintains Ca2＋ homeostasis and protects neurons against various insults. Hyperthermia can exacerbate brain damage produced by ischemic insults. However, little is reported about the role of CB in the brain under hyperthermic condition during ischemic insults. We inves- tigated the effects of transient global cerebral ischemia on CB immunoreactivity as well as neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation under hyperthermic condition using immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclei （NeuN） and CB, and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining in gerbils. Hyperthermia （39.5 ＋ 0.2~C） was induced for 30 minutes before and during transient ischemia. Hyperthermic ischemia resulted in neu- ronal damage/death in the pyramidal layer of CA1-3 area and in the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In addition, hyperthermic ischemia significantly decreaced CB immunoreac- tivity in damaged or dying neurons at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In brief, hyperthermic condition produced more extensive and severer neuronal damage/death, and reduced CB immunoreactivity in the hippocampus following transient global cerebral ischemia. Present findings indicate that the degree of reduced CB immu- noreactivity might be related with various neuronal damage/death overtime and corresponding areas after ischemic insults.

High power generation of adaptive laser beams in a Nd：YVO4 MOPA system

We report efficient power scaling of the laser output with an adaptive bemn profile from an Nd：YAG dual-cavity master oscillator using a three-stage end-pumped Nd：YVO4 amplifier. We succeed ill the last switching of an excited laser mode by modulating an acousto-optic modulator loss in a dual-cavity master oscillator, thereby achieving temporal modulation of the output beam profile. The outputs from the master oscillator are amplified via a three-stage power amplifier yielding 36.6, 40.5, and 45.4 W of the maximum output at 116.8 W of incident pump power for the transverse electromagnetic, Laguerre-Gaussian, and quasi-top-hat beam, respectively. The prospects for further power scaling and applications via the dual-cavity master-oscillator power-amplifier （MOPA） system are considered.
