Above-ground woody biomass allocation and within tree carbon and nutrient distribution of wild cherry(prunus avium L.)-a case study

Background： The global search for new ways to sequester carbon has already reached agricultural lands. Such land constitutes a major potential carbon sink. The production of high value timber within agroforestry systems can facilitate an in-situ carbon storage function. This is followed by a potential long term ex- situ carbon sinkwithin long lasting products such as veneer and furniture. For this purpose wild cherry （prunus avium L.） is an interesting option for middle Europe, yielding high prices on the timber market. Methods： A total number of 39 wild cherry were sampled in 2012 and 2013 to assess the leafless above ground biomass. The complete trees including stem and branches were separated into 1 cm diameter classes. Wood and bark from sub-samples were analysed separately and nutrient content was derived. Models for biomass estimation were constructed for all tree compartments. Results： The smallest diameter classes possess the highest proportion of bark due to smaller cross sectional area. Tree boles with a greater amount of stem wood above 10 cm in diameter will have a more constant bark proportion. Total branch bark proportion also remains relatively constant above *** measurements of 8 cm. A balance is evident between the production of new branches with a low diameter and high bark proportion offset by the thickening and a relative reduction in bark proportion in larger branches. The results show that a single tree with an age of 17 and 18 years can store up to 85 kg of carbon within the aboveground biomass portion, an amount that will increase as the tree matures. Branches display greater nutrient content than stem sections per volume unit which can be attributed to a greater bark proportion. Conclusions： Using the derived models the carbon and the nutrient content of above-ground woody biomass of whole trees can be calculated. Hospitalized ulcerative colitis patients have an elevated risk of thromboembolic events

AIM: To compare thromboembolism rates between hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and other hospitalized patients at high risk for thromboembolism. To compare thromboembolism rates between patients with ulcerative colitis undergoing a colorectal operation and other patients undergoing colorectal operations. METHODS: Data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey was used to compare thromboembolism rates between (1) hospitalized patients with a discharge diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and those with diverticulitis or acute respiratory failure, and (2) hospitalized patients with a discharge diagnosis of ulcerative colitis who underwent colectomy and those with diverticulitis or colorectal cancer who underwent colorectal operations. RESULTS: patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis had similar or higher rates of combined venous thromboembolism (2.03%) than their counterparts with diverticulitis (0.76%) or respiratory failure (1.99%), despite the overall greater prevalence of thromboembolic risk factors in the latter groups. Discharged patients with colitis that were treated surgically did not have signifi cantly different rates of venous or arterial thromboembolism than those with surgery for diverticulitis or colorectal ***: patients with ulcerative colitis who do not undergo an operation during their hospitalization have similar or higher rates of thromboembolism than other medical patients who are considered to be high risk for thromboembolism.

The evolution of coal, examining the transitions from anthracite to natural graphite: a spectroscopy and optical microscopy evaluation

Coal-derived natural graphite(CDNG)has multiple industrial ***,ten metamorphic coals from anthracite to CDNG were obtained from Lutang and Xinhua in the Hunan province and panshi in the Jilin *** characterization(proximate and ultimate analyses,X-Ray powder diffraction(XRD),and powder Raman spectroscopy),along with optical microscopy,scanning electron microscope(SEM)and micro-Raman spectroscopy were utilized to examine the transitions from anthracite to semi-graphite to *** XRD and Raman spectroscopy data indicate that from anthracite to highly ordered graphite the average crystal diameter(La)and height(Lc)increased from 6.1 and 4.6 nm to 34.8 and 27.5 nm,*** crystalline parameters of the CDNG samples from panshi and Lutang varied slightly when closer to the intrusive *** microscopy and SEM indicated that in the anthracite samples there were thermoplastic vitrinite,devolatilized vitrinite,and some“normal”*** the meta-anthracite,pyrolytic carbon,mosaic structure,and crystalline tar were *** the CDNG there were flake graphite,crystalline aggregates,and matrix *** crystalline aggregates show the highest structural ordering degree as determined from Raman spectral parameters(full-width at half maxima(G-FWHM)~20 cm^(−1),D1/(D1+D2+G)area ratio(R2)valuephite is less ordered with G-FWHM~28 cm^(−1) and 0.5p to 50μm).The mosaic structures were likely the precursors of the matrix graphite through in situ solid-state *** pyrolytic carbon and crystalline tars are the transient phase of gas-state and liquid-state *** study is beneficial to realize the rational utilization of CDNG.

predictive Factors of Renal Failure in COVID-19 patients at the Anti-COVID Center in Lome, Togo

Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 has been identified as the receptor that allows the entry of SarsCov2 into the human cell. Its expression in the kidney is 100 times higher than in the lung;thus, making the kidney an excellent target for SarsCov2 infection manifesting as renal failure (RF). The objective of this study was to determine the predictive factors of RF during COVID-19 in the Togolese context. patients and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study conducted at the Lomé Anti-COVID Center including the records of patients hospitalized for COVID-19, of age ≥ 18 years and having performed a creatinemia. RF was defined by a GFR 2 calculated according to the MDRD formula. patients were randomized into 2 groups according to GFRResults: 482 patients were selected for this study with a mean age of 58.02 years. Sixty-five percent of the patients were men, i.e., a sex ratio of 1.88. Fifty-two patients had RF, i.e., a frequency of 10.8%.There were 65% men (315 cases), for a sex ratio (M/F) of 1.88. Risk factors for renal failure in COVID-19 were age ≥ 65 years (ORa 2.42;CIa95% [1.17 - 4.95];p = 0.016), anemia (ORa 2.49;CIa95% [1.21 - 5.26];p = 0.015), moderate (ORa 13;CIa95% [2.30 - 2.44];p = 0.017), severe (ORa 26.2;CIa95% [4.85 - 4.93];p = 0.002) and critical (ORa 108;CIa95% [16.5 - 21.76];p Conclusion: Renal failure would therefore be related to the severity of COVID-19 and is the most formidable factor, conditioning the course of the disease and the patient’s vital prognosis.

Formation of efficient dye-sensitized solar cells by introducing an interfacial layer of hierarchically ordered macro-mesoporous TiO_2 film

Hierarchically ordered macro-mesoporous TiO2 films (Ti-Ma-Me) were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates through the confinement self-assembly method. The prepared Ti-Ma-Me possesses periodically ordered structure and a large specific surface area, which was applied as an interfacial layer between the nanocrystalline TiO2 film (p25-TiO2) and FTO electrode in the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The introduction of a Ti-Ma-Me interfacial layer increased the shortcircuit current density (Jsc) from 7.49 to 10.65 mA/cm2 and the open-circuit voltage (Voc) from 0.65 to 0.70 V as the result of its improved light harvesting efficiency by allowing for the high roughness factor and enhanced multiple internal reflection or scattering as well as reducing the back-transport reaction by blocking direct contact between the electrolyte and FTO electrode. Therefore, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency (η) was improved by 83% from 3.04% to 5.55%, as compared to a device using a bare p25 TiO2 photoanode.

Techniques to study brain activities have evolved dramatically,yet tremendous challenges remain in acquiring high-throughput electrophysiological recordings minimally ***,we develop an integrated neuroelectronic array that is filamentary,highdensity and ***,with a design of single-transistor multiplexing and current sensing,the total 256 neuroelectrodes achieve only a 2.3×0.3mm^(2)area,unprecedentedly on a flexible substrate.A single-transistor multiplexing acquisition circuit further reduces noise from the electrodes,decreases the footprint of each pixel,and potentially increases the device’s *** filamentary neuroelectronic array also integrates with a rollable contact pad design,allowing the device to be injected through a syringe,enabling potential minimally invasive array *** acute auditory experiments in rats validate the ability of the array to record neural signals with high tone decoding ***,these results establish soft,high-density neuroelectronic arrays as promising devices for neuroscience research and clinical applications.

Oral eplerenone for the management of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy

AIM: To examine eplerenone(Inspra, pfizer), a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, as a treatment option for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR).METHODS: A retrospective consecutive case series was conducted for patients receiving oral eplerenone for chronic CSCR. At baseline and each follow-up visit,spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)imaging was performed, including manual measurements of the height and diameter size of subretinal fluid. The primary outcome measure was the reduction in subretinal fluid following initiation of ***: A total of 17 eyes of 13 patients treated with25 and 50 mg of oral eplerenone per day were *** fluid(SRF) decreased over time following eplerenone therapy(p = 0.007 and p =0.002, diameter and height respectively). Maximum SRF height decreased from a mean of 131.5 μm at baseline to 15.3 μm at day181+. SRF diameter decreased from an average of 2174.4μm at baseline to 46.9 μm at day 181 +. Log MAR visual acuity improved from 0.42(Snellen equivalent: 20/53) at baseline to 0.29(Snellen equivalent: 20/39) at day 181 +(p = 0.024). Central subfield thickness(CST) decreased from 339.5 μm at baseline to 270.3 μm at day 181+(p = 0.029).CONCLUSION: Eplerenone therapy resulted in significant anatomic and visual improvements in eyes with chronic CSCR.

Cytoplasmic dynein-2： from molecules to human diseases

The dynein motor protein family is involved in a wide variety of functions in eukaryotic cells. The axonemal dynein class and cytoplasmic dynein-1 subclass have been well characterized. However, the cytoplasmic dynein-2 subclass of the family has only recently begun to be understood. We describe the entire dynein family but focus on cytoplasmic dynein-2. Dynein-2 consists of a heavy, an intermediate, a light intermediate, and a light chain. The complex appears to function primarily as the retrograde motor for intraflagellar transport. This process is important for the formation and maintenance of cilia and flagella. Additionally, dynein-2 has roles in the control of ciliary length and in non-ciliary functions. Mutations in the human dynein-2 heavy chain lead to cilia-related diseases.

Harnessing migraines for neural regeneration
