This paper posits that a low-speed wind turbine design is suitable for harnessing wind energy in *** wind turbines consisting of propeller designs are commonly used across the world.A major hurdle to utilizing wind energy in Africa is that conventional commercial wind turbines are designed to operate at wind speeds greater than those prevalent in most of the continent,especially in sub-Sahara Africa(SSA).They are heavy and expensive to purchase,install,and *** a result,only a few countries in Africa have been able to include wind energy in their energy *** this paper,the feasibility of a novel low-speed wind turbine based on a Ferris wheel is demonstrated for low wind speed applications in *** performance of Ferris wheel wind turbines(FWT)with 61m(200 ft),73m(240 ft)and 104m(341 ft)diameter rims and an 800kW generator are evaluated for selected African *** research also compares the Weibull wind distribution of the African cities of interest.A comparison between the FWT and the conventional commercial wind turbines in terms of efficiency,rated wind speed,cost,performance,and power to weight is *** show that the FWT has the potential for economic power generation at rated wind speeds of 6.74m/s,which are lower than the average of 12 m/s for conventional wind turbines and have lower power to weight ratios of 5.2 kW/tonne as compared to 6.0-9.2 kW/tonne for conventional wind turbines.

Multivariate analyses of skull morphology inform the taxonomy and evolution of geomyoid rodents

Morphological analyses are critical to quantify phenotypic variation,identify taxa,inform phylogenetic relationships,and shed light on evolutionary *** work is particularly important in groups that display great morphological *** is the case in geomyoid rodents,a group that includes 2 of the most species-rich families of rodents in North America:the Geomyidae(pocket gophers)and the Heteromyidae(kangaroo rats,pocket mice,and their relatives).We assessed variation in skull morphology(including both shape and size)among geomyoids to test the hypothesis that there are statistically significant differences in skull measurements at the family,genus,and species *** sample includes 886 specimens representing all geomyoid genera and 39 *** used the geometric mean to compare size across *** used 14 measurements of the cranium and lower jaw normalized for size to compare shape among and within *** results show that skull measurements enable the distinction of geomyoids at the family,genus,and species *** is a larger amount of size variation within Geomyidae than within *** phylomorphospace analysis shows that the skull shape of the common ancestor of all geomyoids was more similar to the common ancestor of heteromyids than that of *** skulls display negative allometry whereas heteromyid skulls display positive *** heteromyids,dipodomyines,and non-dipodomyines show significantly different allometric *** analyses including fossils will be necessary to test our evolutionary hypotheses.

Joint task scheduling and multi-UAV deployment for aerial computing in emergency communication networks

This article studies mobile edge computing technologies enabled by unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) in disasters. First, considering that the ground servers may be damaged in emergency scenarios, we proposed an air-ground cooperation architecture based on ad-hoc UAV networks. We defined the system cost as the weighted sum of task delay and energy consumption because of different delay sensitivity and energy sensitivity tasks in emergency communication networks. Then, we formulated the system cost-minimization problem of task scheduling and multi-UAV deployments. To solve the proposed mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, we decomposed it to two sub-problems that were solved by proposing a swap matchingbased task scheduling sub-algorithm and a successive convex approximation-based multi-UAV deployment sub-algorithm. Accordingly, we propose a joint optimization algorithm by iterating the two sub-algorithms to obtain a low complexity sub-optimal solution. Finally, the simulation results show that(i) the proposed algorithm converges in several iterations, and(ii) compared with the benchmark algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better performance of reducing task delay and energy consumption and achieves a good tradeoff between them for diverse tasks.

Optimizing management in autoimmune hepatitis with liver failure at initial presentation
