Food Habits and Distribution of the Lake Taal Sea Snake(Hydrophis semperi Garman 1881) and the Sympatric Little File Snake(Acrochordus granulatus Schneider 1799) in Lake Taal, Philippines

Our knowledge about the food habits of sea snakes and how it is associated with their distribution has seen much development through its description across a number of species available through published literature except for the key threatened species such asHydrophis semperi. This paper aims to describe the food habits ofH. semperi through gut content and stable isotope analyses. We also compared data with the Little File Snake,Acrochordus granulatus, sympatric withH. *** captures ofH. semperi suggest that the sea snake tends to occur in the littoral zones and the shallower portions of the limnetic zone. Gut content analysis ofH. semperi have shown that gobies and eels are primary prey items. Halfbeaks （Family Hemiramphidae） were recorded as one of the Lake Taal Sea Snake＇s prey items which is considered as a new prey record for sea snakes. These extracted gut contents are conifrmed to be the temporal food preference ofH. semperi given our detected stable isotope signatures. It appears thatA. granulatus and H. semperi share common prey items suggesting possible diet overlap and resource *** study reports the ifrst account of the endemic Lake Taal Sea Snake＇s distribution and food habits which poses implications towards its conservation as it occurs in a restricted ecosystem that has undergone considerable habitat alteration.

In December 2019 a novel coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2),started spreading from Wuhan city of Chinese Hubei province and rapidly became a global *** symptoms of the disease range from paucisymptomatic disease to a much more severe *** symptoms of the initial phase include fever and cough,with possible progression to acute respiratory distress *** manifestations such as diarrhoea,vomiting and abdominal pain are reported in a considerable number of affected individuals and may be due to the SARS-CoV-2 tropism for the peptidase angiotensin receptor *** intestinal homeostasis and microenvironment appear to play a major role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and in the enhancement of the systemic inflammatory ***-term consequences of COVID-19 include respiratory disturbances and other disabling manifestations,such as fatigue and psychological *** date,there is a paucity of data on the gastrointestinal sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 *** COVID-19 can directly or indirectly affect the gut physiology in different ways,it is plausible that functional bowel diseases may occur after the recovery because of potential pathophysiological alterations(dysbiosis,disruption of the intestinal barrier,mucosal microinflammation,post-infectious states,immune dysregulation and psychological stress).In this review we speculate that COVID-19 can trigger irritable bowel syndrome and we discuss the potential mechanisms.

Application of a Machine Learning Algorithm for the Structural Optimization of Circular Arches with Different Cross-Sections

Arches are employed for bridges. This particular type of structures, characterized by a very old use tradition, is nowadays, widely exploited because of its strength, resilience, cost-effectiveness and charm. In recent years, a more conscious design approach that focuses on a more proper use of the building materials combined with the increasing of the computational capability of the modern computers, has led the research in the civil engineering field to the study of optimization algorithms applications aimed at the definition of the best design parameters. In this paper, a differential formulation and a MATLAB code for the calculation of the internal stresses in the arch structure are proposed. Then, the application of a machine learning algorithm, the genetic algorithm, for the calculation of the geometrical parameters, that allows to minimize the quantity of material that constitute the arch structures, is implemented. In this phase, the method used to calculate the stresses has been considered as a constraint function to reduce the range of the solutions to the only ones able to bear the design loads with the smallest volume. In particular, some case studies with different cross-sections are reported to prove the validity of the method and to compare the obtained results in terms of optimization effectiveness.

In this report,we present multiparameter deformability cytometry(m-DC),in which we explore a large set of parameters describing the physical phenotypes of pluripotent cells and their derivatives.m-DC utilizes microfluidic inertial focusing and hydrodynamic stretching of single cells in conjunction with high-speed video recording to realize high-throughput characterization of over 20 different cell motion and morphology-derived *** extracted from videos include size,deformability,deformation kinetics,and *** train support vector machines that provide evidence that these additional physical measurements improve classification of induced pluripotent stem cells,mesenchymal stem cells,neural stem cells,and their derivatives compared to size and deformability *** addition,we utilize visual interactive stochastic neighbor embedding to visually map the high-dimensional physical phenotypic spaces occupied by these stem cells and their progeny and the pathways traversed during *** report demonstrates the potential of m-DC for improving understanding of physical differences that arise as cells differentiate and identifying cell subpopulations in a label-free ***,such approaches could broaden our understanding of subtle changes in cell phenotypes and their roles in human biology.

Convergence Detection in Direct Simulation Monte carlo Calculations for Steady State Flows

A new criterion is presented to detect global convergence to steady state,and to identify local transient characteristics,during rarefied gas flow simulations performed using the direct simulation Monte carlo(DSMC)*** deterministic computational fluid dynamics(CFD)schemes,DSMC is generally subject to large statistical scatter in instantaneous flow property evaluations,which prevents the use of residual tracking procedures as are often employed in CFD ***,reliable prediction of the time to reach steady state is necessary for initialization of DSMC sampling *** currently used in DSMC to identify steady state convergence are usually insensitive to weak transient behavior in small regions of relatively low density or recirculating *** proposed convergence criterion is developed with the goal of properly identifying such weak transient behavior,while adding negligible computational expense and allowing simple implementation in any existing DSMC *** of the proposed technique over existing convergence detection methods are demonstrated for representative nozzle/plume expansion flow,hypersonic blunt body flow and driven cavity flow problems.

Possible Neutrino-Antineutrino Production during Gamma Ray e−e+ Pair Production: Monte carlo Simulation Study

An alternative Feynman diagram for electron-positron pair production, in which neutrino and antineutrino are also produced on the same pathway, is introduced here. In the proposed pair production process, a portion of the momentum is carried by neutrinos and antineutrinos, allowing the rest of the momentum for the electron-positron pair. Simulations to inspect the proposed pair production process were conducted in this research using the EGS5 code system while modifying its subroutine “PAIR”. Liquid Xenon detector was then positioned in the path of various mono-energetic photon beams ranging from 2.6 to 12 MeV. These simulations were intended to inspect the detectability of the alternative pair production effects on radiation measurements in order to assess the detection conditions. Simulation results provided a comparison between the original pair production process and the proposed pair production process. Spectral results showed that changes in the region around 1 - 2 MeV and in the photopeak region were remarkable, therefore detectable. Further experimental research is recommended based on simulation findings. The alternative pair production process, firstly introduced in this paper, led to production of a larger flux of neutrinos from gamma radiation. This additional neutrino production and its contribution to non-baryonic dark matter are discussed.
