Food Habits and Distribution of the Lake Taal Sea Snake(Hydrophis semperi Garman 1881) and the Sympatric Little File Snake(Acrochordus granulatus Schneider 1799) in Lake Taal, Philippines

Our knowledge about the food habits of sea snakes and how it is associated with their distribution has seen much development through its description across a number of species available through published literature except for the key threatened species such asHydrophis semperi. This paper aims to describe the food habits ofH. semperi through gut content and stable isotope analyses. We also compared data with the Little File Snake,Acrochordus granulatus, sympatric withH. *** captures ofH. semperi suggest that the sea snake tends to occur in the littoral zones and the shallower portions of the limnetic zone. Gut content analysis ofH. semperi have shown that gobies and eels are primary prey items. Halfbeaks （Family Hemiramphidae） were recorded as one of the Lake Taal Sea Snake＇s prey items which is considered as a new prey record for sea snakes. These extracted gut contents are conifrmed to be the temporal food preference ofH. semperi given our detected stable isotope signatures. It appears thatA. granulatus and H. semperi share common prey items suggesting possible diet overlap and resource *** study reports the ifrst account of the endemic Lake Taal Sea Snake＇s distribution and food habits which poses implications towards its conservation as it occurs in a restricted ecosystem that has undergone considerable habitat alteration.

Application of a Machine Learning Algorithm for the Structural Optimization of Circular Arches with Different Cross-Sections

Arches are employed for bridges. This particular type of structures, characterized by a very old use tradition, is nowadays, widely exploited because of its strength, resilience, cost-effectiveness and charm. In recent years, a more conscious design approach that focuses on a more proper use of the building materials combined with the increasing of the computational capability of the modern computers, has led the research in the civil engineering field to the study of optimization algorithms applications aimed at the definition of the best design parameters. In this paper, a differential formulation and a MATLAB code for the calculation of the internal stresses in the arch structure are proposed. Then, the application of a machine learning algorithm, the genetic algorithm, for the calculation of the geometrical parameters, that allows to minimize the quantity of material that constitute the arch structures, is implemented. In this phase, the method used to calculate the stresses has been considered as a constraint function to reduce the range of the solutions to the only ones able to bear the design loads with the smallest volume. In particular, some case studies with different cross-sections are reported to prove the validity of the method and to compare the obtained results in terms of optimization effectiveness.

Convergence Detection in Direct Simulation Monte carlo Calculations for Steady State Flows

A new criterion is presented to detect global convergence to steady state,and to identify local transient characteristics,during rarefied gas flow simulations performed using the direct simulation Monte carlo(DSMC)*** deterministic computational fluid dynamics(CFD)schemes,DSMC is generally subject to large statistical scatter in instantaneous flow property evaluations,which prevents the use of residual tracking procedures as are often employed in CFD ***,reliable prediction of the time to reach steady state is necessary for initialization of DSMC sampling *** currently used in DSMC to identify steady state convergence are usually insensitive to weak transient behavior in small regions of relatively low density or recirculating *** proposed convergence criterion is developed with the goal of properly identifying such weak transient behavior,while adding negligible computational expense and allowing simple implementation in any existing DSMC *** of the proposed technique over existing convergence detection methods are demonstrated for representative nozzle/plume expansion flow,hypersonic blunt body flow and driven cavity flow problems.

RESIDENTIAL DRAIN WATER HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS: MODELING, ANALYSIS, AND IMPLEMENTATION

This paper describes the design and environmental improvements that can be achieved using drain water heat recovery systems(DWHR)to reduce the energy consumption associated with residential *** systems transfer heat from hot drain water to the shower’s incoming cold water stream,thus reducing the demand on the hot water *** are various DWHR systems available that differ in heat exchanger type,cost,and *** article focuses on designing a flat plate and gravity fed heat exchangers for a range of residential showering *** is useful since there currently is no peer-reviewed published data on the effectiveness of DWHR,nor is there published research considering the emissions reductions that can be achieved with realistic DWHR *** governing equations for heat exchangers are used to model empirical data and to derive implementation recommendations for DWHR *** model is validated using a prototype flat plate heat exchanger and test stand under varying flow rates and temperatures.A Monte carlo simulation of the results showed that DWHR could save an average$74 a year for homes with natural gas water heaters and$160 a year for homes with electric water *** corresponds to 0.3 metric tons and 1.5 metric tons of CO_(2) offset per home per year for natural gas and electric water heaters,*** results are compiled and organized into a software program that allows consumers to input their household showering habits and location to get an estimate of their CO_(2),energy,and cost savings to determine if they should install a DWHR system.
