Mainstream silicon photonic integrated circuits are based on compact and low-loss silicon-on-insulator(SOI)waveguide platforms. However, monolithic SOI-based photonics provides only a limited number of functional device types. Here, to extend the on-chip capabilities, we propose a general heterogeneous integration approach to embed highly nonlinear Ⅲ-Ⅴ(Al Ga As) photonics into the SOI platform. We develop low-loss AlGaAs-on-SOI photonic circuits with integrated Si waveguides and showcase sub-milliwatt-threshold(-25 mW) Kerr frequency comb generation in ultrahigh-QAlGaAs microrings(Q over 10^(6)) at the telecom bands. Our demonstration complements existing mature Si photonics technology with efficient nonlinear functionalities provided by Ⅲ-Ⅴ and propels conventional Si photonics into emerging nonlinear photonic applications towards fully chip-based nonlinear engines.

Production of ceramic armour solutions on-demand/in-theatre would have significant logistical and military ***,even assuming that such technologies could be successfully deployed in the field,such near net-shape manufacturing technology is relatively immature compared to conventional sintering of *** this study,the ballistic performance of a series of additively manufactured(AM)/rapidly-prototyped(RP)alumina tiles of 97.2%of the density of Sintox FATM were investigated using both forward-and reverse-ballistic *** experiments,undertaken with compressed gasguns,employed the depth-of-penetration technique and flash X-ray as primary diagnostics to interrogate both efficiency of penetration and projectile-target interaction,*** RP alumina was found to exhibit useful ballistic properties,successfully defeating steel-cored(AP)7.62×39 mm BXN rounds at velocities of up-to c.a.850 m/s,while exhibiting comparable failure modes to conventionally sintered armour-grade Sintox ***,where aced into the RP material failure modes changed dramatically with performance dropping below that of conventionally sintered ***,the results from both sets of experiments were complimentary and clearly indicated the potential of such RP materials to play an active role in provision of real-world body armour solutions provided quality control of the RP material can be maintained.

Partial similarity of shapes is a challenging problem arising in many important applications in computer vision,shape analysis,and graphics,*** one has to deal with partial information and acquisition *** problem is especially hard when the underlying shapes are non-rigid and are given up to a *** matching is usually approached by computing local descriptors on a pair of shapes and then establishing a point-wise non-bijective correspondence between the two,taking into account possibly different *** this paper,we introduce an alternative correspondence-less approach to matching fragments to an entire shape undergoing a non-rigid *** use region-wise local descriptors and optimize over the integration domains on which the integral descriptors of the two parts *** problem is regularized using the Mumford-Shah *** show an efficient discretization based on the Ambrosio-Tortorelli approximation generalized to triangular point clouds and meshes,and present experiments demonstrating the success of the proposed method.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the School Breakfast Program (SBP), and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and children (WIc) share a common goal of helping people with limited financial means obtain better diets than they could otherwise afford, but the programs differ in terms of the groups that they target and the types of assistance they provide. While the programs appear to increase food consumption among households generally and among their intended beneficiaries, we know much less about whether they help other people. This investigation uses 2002-2003 data from the second child Development Supplement of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to examine the relationship between households’ participation in the SNAP, SBP, NLSP, and WIc and individual 10 - 17 year-old children’s consumption of particular food items. Our analyses indicate that WIc participation by others in the household is associated with a 22 percent increase in breakfast consumption of milk and a 16 percent increase in breakfast consumption of cereal for the children in our sample, while WIc is associated with a 13 percent decrease in toast consumption. Participation in school meals is also associated with increased consumption of some foods, particularly juice, fruit, and sweet snacks. Household SNAP participation is estimated to have positive associations with some foods but negative associations with others.

Background: The aetiology of gastric outlet obstruction globally has evolved from benign to malignant causes, but there seem to be no recent data on the trends in Ghana. The aim was, therefore, to identify the current patterns in the aetiology of gastric outlet obstruction in the adult population in Ghana. Methodology: This was a retrospective review of all confirmed cases of gastric outlet obstruction in the last decade, spanning from June 2004 to May 2014, that were managed at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Results: A total of 107 patients were managed for gastric outlet obstruction with a male to female ratio of 2.15:1 and most of the patients making 71.3% of cases belonged to the age range of 40 to 60 years. The predominant aetiology for gastric outlet obstruction was found to be gastric cancer (55.140%), followed by peptic ulcer disease (27.103%). conclusion: The aetiology of gastric outlet obstruction in Ghana has evolved from benign to malignant causes, following current global trends. Gastric cancer is now the most important cause of gastric outlet obstruction in Ghana, followed by peptic ulcer disease which predominates as the commonest benign cause.

Agricultural intensification and the subsequent decline of mixed farming systems has led to an increase in continuous cropping with only a few fallow or break years,undermining global soil ***-ley rotations incorporating temporary pastures(leys) lasting 1–4 years may alleviate soil degradation by building soil fertility and improving soil ***,the majority of previous research on arable-ley rotations has utilized either grass or grassclover leys within ungrazed *** leys,containing a mix of grasses,legumes,and herbs,are rapidly gaining popularity due to their promotion in agri-environment schemes and potential to deliver greater ecosystem services than conventional grass or grass-clover *** grazing in arable-ley rotations may increase the economic resilience of these systems,despite limited research of the effects of multispecies leys on ruminant health and greenhouse gas *** review aims to evaluate previous research on multispecies leys,highlighting areas for future research and the potential benefits and disbenefits on soil quality and livestock *** botanical composition of multispecies leys is crucial,as legumes,deep rooted perennial plants(e.g.,Onobrychis viciifolia and cichorium intybus) and herbs(e.g.,Plantago lanceolata) can increase soil carbon,improve soil structure,reduce nitrogen fertilizer requirements,and promote the recovery of soil fauna(e.g.,earthworms) in degraded arable soils while delivering additional environmental benefits(e.g.,biological nitrification inhibition and enteric methane reduction).Multispecies leys have the potential to deliver biologically driven regenerative agriculture,but more long-term research is needed to underpin evidence-based policy and farmer guidance.
