The sword lily Gladiolus palustris Gaudin is protected on European level and listed in Annexes II and Iv of the EC Habitat Directive 92/43/*** grows in nutrient-poor,calcareous meadows in central and eastern *** encroachment in montane meadows of the European Alps as a result of recent land use changes and the abandonment of traditional farming practices threaten the survival of this ***-driven mowing is considered a feasible conservation measure for maintaining high species diversity in abandoned semi-natural *** assess the effects of tenyears of biennial mowing on a grassland community in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park,Italy(Site of Community Importance,Natura 2000 network),ten25 m2 plots were established whereby four plots were placed in the mowed area,four in the non-mowed area and two in a small non-mowed patch of grassland inside the mowed *** each plot the following variables were recorded,total percentage of plant cover,percentage cover of woody species,percentage cover of herbaceous species,percentage cover and number of flowering ramets of *** and a complete list of species and their percentage *** plots showed a higher species richness than non-mowed *** number of *** flowering ramets and percentage cover increased manifold in mowed plots compared to nonmowed *** resumption of mowing forconservation purposes undertaken by the managing authority halted the process of tree encroachment and avoided a drastic change in plant *** mowing(every second or third year)was demonstrated to be a cost-effective conservation measure in non-productive grasslands to keep grasses at bay in favour of forbs of high conversation value.

Adaptation allows organisms to maintain a constant internal environment,which is optimised for *** unfolded protein response(UPR)is an example of a feedback loop that maintains endoplasmic reticulum(ER)homeostasis,and is characteristic of how adaptation is often mediated by transcriptional *** more recent discovery of asymmetric division in maintaining ER homeostasis,however,is an example of how alternative non-transcriptional pathways can exist,but are overlooked by gold standard transcriptomic or proteomic population-based *** this study,we have used a combination of fluorescent reporters,flow cytometry and mathematical modelling to explore the relative roles of asymmetric cell division and the UPR in maintaining ER *** low ER stress,asymmetric division leaves daughter cells with an ER deficiency,necessitating activation of the UPR and prolonged cell cycle during which they can recover ER functionality before *** analysis of and simulation results from our mathematical model reinforce the experimental observations that low ER stress primarily impacts the growth rate of the daughter *** results demonstrate the interplay between homeostatic pathways and the importance of exploring sub-population dynamics to understand population adaptation to quantitatively different stresses.

Effects of progesterone on T-type-Ca^(2+)-channel expression in Purkinje cells

Safeguarding plants as seeds in ex situ collections is a cost effective element in an integrated plant conservation approach. The European Alps are a regional centre of plant diversity. Six institutions have established a regional network covering the European Alps which will conserve at least 500 priority plant species and which will improve the conservation status of plant species in grassland communities in the subalpine, alpine and nival altitudinal belts. Targeted research will expand the knowledge of the ecology of target speeies. Public engagement activities will raise the awareness for the importance of specific conservation actions in the European Alps.

The micro-hydropower has the technical capability of providing electricity to rural areas in manica or other isolated place in mozambique in currently not yet supplied with EDm (mozambicam electricity Supply Company). Associated that, today more than 12 million of mozambicans live below the poverty line including in non-electrified areas and most of these populations are rural people. The stochastic ARmA model and Neural Wavelet was built and fitted from the historical 49 years of hydrology predictions. The flow duration curve was plotted based on flow data with objective to find power potential that was 76.8 Kw.

Endothelial adhesion of synchronized gastric tumor cells changes during cell cycle transit and correlates with the expression level of CD44 splice variants

AIm To study adhesion capacity and CD44 expression of human gastric adenocarcinoma mKN45 cells at different stages of a first cell cycle. mETHODS mKN45 cells were synchronized by aphidicolin and assayed for adhesion to an endothelial cell （HUvEC） monolayer. Surface expression of CD44 and CD44 splice variants on mKN45 cells was evaluated by flow cytometry. Functional relevance of CD44 adhesion receptors was investigated by blocldng studies using anti CD44 monodonal antibodies or by hyaluronan digestion. RESULTS： Adhesion of mKN45 to HUvEC was increased during G2/m transit, after which adhesion returned to baseline levels with cell cycle completion. In parallel, CD44 splice vadants CD44v4, CD44v5, and CD44v7 were all upregulated on mKN45 during cell cycle progression with a maximum effect in G2/m. The function of CD44 surface receptors was assessed with specific receptor blocking monoclonal antibodies or removal of hyaluronan by digestion with hyaluronidase. Both strategies inhibited tumor cell adhesion to HUvEC by nearly 50%, which indicates that mKN45-HUvEC-interaction is CD44 dependent. CONCLUSION CD44 expression level is linked to the cell cycle in gastrointestinal tumor cells, which in turn leads to cell cycle dependent alterations of their adhesion behaviour to endothelium.

Alleviation of arsenic toxicity by phosphate is associated with its regulation of detoxification,defense,and transport gene expression in barley

Arsenic(As) contamination in soils has posed a severe threat to safe crop production. The previous studies showed the antagonism between phosphorus(P) and As in plant growth and As uptake, while the mechanisms of alleviating As toxicity by P is not completely clear. Due to the limiting P condition, it is imperative to understand how low P addition can be used to suppress arsenate As(v) uptake and the subsequent mechanisms involved. Thus in this study we investigated the effect of P addition on As uptake, anti-oxidative enzyme activity, and anti-oxidant content, and the relative expression of transport, defense, and detoxification genes using two barley genotypes differing in As toxicity tolerance. P addition significantly reduced As concentration in plant tissues, and caused the great changes in activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase, glutathione content, and the relative expression of examined genes when the plants of the two barley genotypes were exposed to 100 μmol L^(–1) As, with ZDB160(As-tolerant) being much more affected than ZDB475(As-sensitive). The current results show that P addition can alleviate As toxicity by regulating the expression of As transport, defense, and detoxification genes to a greater extent in As tolerance of barley, suggesting the possibility of controlling As uptake and toxicity by applying low amount of P fertilizers in the As-contaminated soils.
