Evaluation of WEPP versus EGEM and empirical model efficiencies in predicting ephemeral gully erosion around Mubi area,Northeast Nigeria

Evaluation of prediction models is crucial to achieving valid information on erosion processes and their management *** model efficiency in predicting ephemeral gully(EG)erosion was recently tested and compared with both EGEM and empirical *** models abilities to predict EG erosion were validated using measured estimates at the 6 eroding locations around Mubi area in Northeast Nigeria between April 2008 and October *** location consisted of 3 watersheds where data on soils,climate,slope,management practices,EG shapes and dimensions were *** on relevant soil properties were collected in the field and then analyzed in *** mass of soil loss(MSL)predicted by empirical,EGEM and WEPP models were compared with the measured using paired T-test,regression graphs(r^(2)-values),error analysis,and analysis of variance(ANOVA)in a completely ran-domized *** EG erosion losses varied significantly(P≤0.05)between sites and *** sig-nificant(P≤0.05)differences were observed between measured and the empirically predicted aggregate *** measured aggregate MSL strongly correlated with those predicted by empirical(r^(2)=0.67),than with EGEM(r^(2)=0.57),and WEPP(r^(2)=0.53)*** over and under-prediction instances against the measured erosion were noted with all the *** WEPP model was found to slightly over-predict MSL when compared to either the empirical or EGEM *** prediction quality of the models was generally *** works should focus more on local inputs such as climate,plants,management,and tillage data for use with WEPP.

A field adaptation test of the Ephemeral Gully Erosion Model(EGEM)to predict ephemeral gully(EG)erosion was carried out in the 2008 and 2009 farming seasons in the Mubi area,NE *** use,conservation practices,and EG channel features were measured and/or noted at each *** loss varied among the sites and *** measured area,volume,and mass of soil loss were used to test the standard EGEM_(std),and the adapted models'(EGEM_(Ad) and EGEM_(Al))prediction *** result showed that EGEM_(std) could not predict the area of soil loss *** EGEM_(Ad) and EGEM_(Al) were efficient and better adapted to predicting area,volume,and mass loss from EG *** adapted models are therefore strongly recommended for implementation in the study area.

Soil erosion prediction technology began over 70 years ago when Austin Zingg published a relationship between soil erosion(by water)and land slope and length,followed shortly by a relationship by Dwight Smith that expanded this equation to include conservation ***,it was nearly 20 years before this work's expansion resulted in the Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE),perhaps the foremost achievement in soil erosion prediction in the last *** USLE has increased in application and complexity,and its usefulness and limitations have led to the development of additional technologies and new science in soil erosion research and *** among these new technologies is the Water Erosion Prediction Project(WEPP)model,which has helped to overcome many of the shortcomings of the USLE,and increased the scale over which erosion by water can be *** of application of erosion prediction include almost all land types:urban,rural,cropland,forests,rangeland,and construction *** applications of WEPP include prediction of radioactive material movement with soils at a superfund cleanup site,and near real-time daily estimation of soil erosion for the entire state of Iowa.

Functional and clinical outcome with modified lateral approach total hip arthroplasty in stiff hips with ankylosing spondylitis

The development of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapies has been instrumental in advancing the field of immunotherapy. Despite the prominence of these treatments, many patients exhibit primary or acquired resistance, rendering them ineffective. For example, anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD-1)/anti-programmed cell death ligand 1 (anti-PD-L1) treatments are widely utilized across a range of cancer indications, but the response rate is only 10%-30%. As such, it is necessary for researchers to identify targets and develop drugs that can be used in combination with existing ICB therapies to overcome resistance. The intersection of cancer, metabolism, and the immune system has gained considerable traction in recent years as a way to comprehensively study the mechanisms that drive oncogenesis, immune evasion, and immunotherapy resistance. As a result, new research is continuously emerging in support of targeting metabolic pathways as an adjuvant to ICB to boost patient response and overcome resistance. Due to the plethora of studies in recent years highlighting this notion, this review will integrate the relevant articles that demonstrate how tumor-derived alterations in energy, amino acid, and lipid metabolism dysregulate anti-tumor immune responses and drive resistance to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy.
