The fauna of the Pleistocene Homo-bearing sites of Java has been well known for more than a century.A recent revision of the crocodylian remains confirmed both the validity of Gavialis bengawanicus and the synonymiza-tion of Crocodylus ossifragus with *** we report on a still unpublished crocodylian specimen collected by Eugene Dubois in the latest Early Pleistocene of Kali Gedeh that can be tentatively referred to the genus *** size of the specimen,the approximately 1 m long lower jaw in particular,indicat-ed that this crocodile attained a total length of approximately 6 or 7 *** with specimens from the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa,this material provides evidence for gigantism in *** is not clear whether or not the‘temperature-size rule’applies to fossil crocodylians,but due to the growing interest in predicting future temperature-related size changes of the extant organisms,it would be interesting to study in detail the past reac-tion to temperature changes of crocodylians and other terrestrial ectothermic animals.

Recent developments in theoretical techniques have significantly improved the predictive power of density-functional-based *** this review,we discuss how such advancements have enabled improved understanding of native point defects in *** review the methodologies for the calculation of point defects,and discuss how techniques for overcoming the band-gap problem of density functional theory affect native defect *** particular,we examine to what extent calculations performed with semilocal functionals(such as the generalized gradient approximation),combined with correction schemes,can produce accurate *** properties of vacancy,interstitial,and antisite defects in GaN are described,as well as their interaction with common *** also connect the first-principles results to experimental observations,and discuss how native defects and their complexes impact the performance of nitride ***,we find that lower-cost functionals,such as the generalized gradient approximation,combined with band-edge correction schemes can produce results that are qualitatively ***,important physics may be missed in some important cases,particularly for optical transitions and when carrier localization occurs.

Tornadoes can destroy or severely damage physical infrastructure including buildings in a *** can result in direct losses but also indirect losses such as the closure of key social institutions reverberating further through the community(e.g.,schools).despite significant losses in past events,building codes and standards have not previously included tornado hazards because of the relatively low probability of a direct *** recent release of the ASCE 7-22 standard considers tornadoes for Risk Category 3 and 4 buildings,*** from schools to critical *** study proposes a series of design combinations of a reinforced masonry school building with different performance targets intended to enable schools to reopen *** fragilities were developed for a school building having improved designs using tornado loads determined based on the new tornado chapter in ASCE 7-22,and then integrated into a community level model with school attendance zones to examine the *** ultimate goal in this study is to investigate the effect of improving school building designs would have on maintaining school continuity(and more rapid return)for school children.

A research method was presented for spatially quantifying and allocating the potential activity of a fine particle matter emission （ PM2.5 ）, which originated from residential wood burning （RWB） in this study. demographic, hypsographic, climatic and topographic data were compiled and processed within a geographic information system（GIS）, and as independent variables put into a linear regression model for describing spatial distribution of the potential activity of residential wood burning as primary heating source. In order to improve the estimation, the classifications of urban, suburban and rural were redefined to meet the specifications of this application. Also, several definitions of forest accessibility were tested for estimation. The results suggested that the potential activity of RWB was mostly determined by elevation of a location, forest accessibility, urban/non-urban position, climatic conditions and several demographic variables. The linear regression model could explain approximately 86% of the variation of surveyed potential activity of RWB. The analysis results were validated by employing survey data collected mainly from a WebGIS based phone interview over the study area in central California. Based on lots free public GIS data, the model provided an easy and ideal tool for geographic researchers, environmental planners and administrators to understand where and how much PM2.5 emission from RWB was contributed to air quality. With this knowledge they could identify regions of concern, and better plan mitigation strategies to improve air quality. Furthermore, it allows for future adjustment on some parameters as the spatial analysis method is implemented in the different regions or various eco-social models.
