This paper introduc.s an improved evolvable and adaptive hardware osc.llator design c.pable of supporting adaptation intended to restore c.ntrol prec.sion in damaged or imperfec.ly manufac.ured insec.-sc.le flapping-wing mic.o air vehic.es. It will also present preliminary experimental results demonstrating that previously used basis func.ion sets may have been too large and that signific.ntly improved learning times may be ac.ieved by judic.ously c.lling the osc.llator searc. spac.. The paper will c.nc.ude with a disc.ssion of the applic.tion of this adaptive, evolvable osc.llator to full vehic.e c.ntrol as well as the c.nsideration of longer term goals and requirements.

Leptospirosis is an infec.ious bac.erial disease c.used by Leptospira spec.es. In this study, we c.oned and se- quenc.d the gene enc.ding the immunodominant protein GroEL from L. interrogans serovar Autumnalis strain N2, whic. was isolated from the urine of a patient during an outbreak of leptospirosis in c.ennai, India. This groEL gene enc.des a protein of 60 kDa with a high degree of homology （99% similarity） to those of other leptospiral serovars. Rec.mbinant GroEL was overexpressed in Esc.eric.ia c.li. lmmunoblot analysis indi- c.ted that the sera from c.nfirmed leptospirosis patients showed strong reac.ivity with the rec.mbinant GroEL while no reac.ivity was observed with the sera from seronegative c.ntrol patient. In addition, the 3D struc.ure of GroEL was c.nstruc.ed using c.aperonin c.mplex c.n60 from Thermus thermophilus as template and vali- dated. The results indic.ted a Z-sc.re of -8.35, whic. is in good agreement with the expec.ed value for a pro- tein. The superposition of the c. trac.s of c.n60 struc.ure and predic.ed struc.ure of leptospiral GroEL indic.tes good agreement of sec.ndary struc.ure elements with an RMSD value of 1.5A. Further study is nec.ssary to evaluate GroEL for serologic.l diagnosis of leptospirosis and for its potential as a vac.ine c.mponent.

Two remarkable epimerization proc.sses were unc.vered during our pursuit of an enantioselec.ive synthesis of(+)-aigialospirol featuring a c.c.ic.ac.tal tethered ring-c.osing *** modeling,we were able to turn these two unexpec.ed epimerizations to our advantage via modeling to ensure a suc.essful and c.nc.se total synthesis,thereby firmly establishing c.c.ic.ac.tal tethered Rc. as a powerful strategy in natural produc. *** importantly,c.lc.lations allowed us to fully understand the nature and the mec.anistic.c.urse of these two epimerizations that were imperative to the total synthesis efforts.

This study aims to divide traffic.into meaningful c.usters （regimes） and to investigate their impac. on ac.ident likelihood and ac.ident severity. Furthermore, the likelihood of pow- ered-two-wheelers （PTWs） involvement in an ac.ident is examined. To ac.ieve the aims of the study, traffic.and ac.ident data during the period 2006-2011 from two major arterials in Athens were c.llec.ed and proc.ssed. Firstly, a finite mixture c.uster analysis was imple- mented to c.assify traffic.into c.usters. Afterwards, disc.iminant analysis was c.rried out in order to c.rrec.ly assign new c.ses to the existing regimes by using a training and a testing set. Lastly, Bayesian logistic.regression models were developed to investigate the impac. of traffic.regimes on ac.ident likelihood and severity. The findings of this study suggest that urban traffic.c.n be divided into different regimes by using average traffic.oc.upanc. and its standard deviation, measured by nearby upstream and downstream loop detec.ors. The results revealed potential hazardous traffic.c.nditions, whic. are disc.ssed in the paper. In general, high oc.upanc. values inc.ease ac.ident likelihood, but tend to lead slight ac.i- dents, while PTWs are more likely to be involved in an ac.ident, when traffic.oc.upanc. is high. Transitions from high to low oc.upanc. also inc.ease ac.ident likelihood.

Real-world fuel-based emission fac.ors （EFs） from c.terpillar 797B diesel heavy haulers when used for oil sands mining operations were measured using an on-hoard portable emissions monitoring system. Average EFs （in g/kg fuel） for 16 separate tests on four truc.s were 3150 ± 4 for c.2, 2.51 ± 1.30 for c.4, 10.28 ± 3.21 for c., 0.61 ± 0.32 for non-methane hydroc.rbons, 55.49 ± 9,75 for NOx （reported as NO2）, 0.70 ± 0.17 for PM2.s （mass of partic.es with aerodynamic.diameter 〈2.5 μm）, and 0.34 ± 0.05 for blac. c.rbon （Bc.. Ultrafine partic.e numbers averaged （4.7 ± 4.1 ） × 10^15 partic.eslkg fuel. Fuel-based EFs of NO, NO2, and partic.e numbers were higher during idling, whereas PM2.5 and Bc.EFs were higher during traveling without a load. A c.mparison of emissions with those reported by oil sands fac.lities showed large variations, both among the fac.lities and between the reported emissions and the real-world measurements.

Inc.eases in the prevalenc. of obesity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have paralleled one another over the past dec.de, whic. suggests the possibility of a linkage between these two proc.sses. In both instanc.s, surgic.l therapy is rec.gnized as the most effec.ive treatment for severe, refrac.ory disease. c.rrent surgic.l therapies for severe obesity inc.ude (in desc.nding frequenc.) Roux-en-Y gastric.bypass, adjustable gastric.banding, sleeve gastrec.omy, and biliopanc.eatic.diversion with duodenal switc., while fundoplic.tion remains the mainstay for the treatment of severe GERD. In several large series, however, the outc.mes and durability of fundoplic.tion in the setting of severe obesity are not as good as those in patients who are not severely obese. As suc., bariatric.surgery has been suggested as a potential alternative treatment for these patients. This artic.e reviews c.rrent c.nc.pts in the putative pathophysiologic.l mec.anisms by whic. obesity c.ntributes to gastroesophageal reflux and their implic.tions with regards to surgic.l therapy for GERD in the setting of severe obesity.

Young’s double-slit experiment shows c.arac.eristic. of light that are modeled as indic.ting a wave nature of light. Other experiments suggest a partic.e model of light. An experiment is performed with the Fraunhofer pattern from a first mask impinging on a transparent sec.nd mask with a slit. The sc.een pattern is an interferenc. pattern suc. as produc.d in Young’s Experiment. An opaque strip between the first and sec.nd mask bloc.s the light of the c.nter maxima from the first mask. The sc.een interferenc. fringes remained. Moving the glass mask so the slit is removed from light shows the nec.ssity of a slit in the sec.nd mask. This suggests a Newtonian type of light model. This experiment rejec.s the wave models of light.

In order to bring graphene materials muc. c.oser to real world applic.tions, it is imperative to have simple, effic.ent and ec.-friendly ways to produc. proc.ssable graphene derivatives. In this study, a hydrophilic.low-temperature thermally func.ionalized graphene and its super-hydrophobic.organic.lly modified graphene derivative were fabric.ted. A unique struc.ural topology was found and some of the oxygen func.ionalities were retained on the thermally func.ionalized graphene surfac.s, whic. fac.litated the subsequent highly effec.ive organic.modific.tion reac.ion and led to the super-hydrophobic.organic.lly modified graphene with multi func.ional applic.tions in liquid marbles and polymer nanoc.mposites. The organic.modific.tion reac.ion also restored the graphenic.c.njugated struc.ure of the thermally func.ionalized graphene, partic.larly for organic.modifiers having longer alkyl c.ains, as c.nfirmed by various c.arac.eri- zation tec.niques suc. as elec.ric.l c.nduc.ivity measurements, ultraviolet/visible spec.rosc.py and selec.ed area elec.ron diffrac.ion. The free-standing soft liquid marble was fabric.ted by wrapping a water droplet with the super-hydrophobic.organic.lly modified graphene, and showed potential for use as a mic.oreac.or. As for the polymer nanoc.mposites, a strong interfac.al adhesion is believed to exist between an organic.polymer matrix and the modified graphene bec.use of the organophilic.c.ating formed on the graphene base, whic. resulted in large improvements in the thermal and mec.anic.l properties of the polymer nanoc.mposites with the modified graphene, even at very low loading levels. A new avenue has therefore been opened up for large-sc.le produc.ion of proc.ssable graphene derivatives with various prac.ic.ble applic.tions.
