Survival after inflammatory bowel disease-associated colorectal cancer in the Colon Cancer Family Registry

AIM: To investigate the survival of individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD-associated CRC) compared to that of individuals without IBD diagnosed with CRC. METHODS: Epidemiologic, clinical, and follow-up data were obtained from the Colon Cancer Family Registry (Colon CFR). IBD-associated cases were identified from self-report of physician diagnosis. For a subset of participants, medical records were examined to confirm self-report of IBD. Cox proportional hazards regression was applied to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) and 95%CI of mortality, comparing IBD-associated to non-IBD-associated CRC, adjusted for age at CRC diagnosis, sex, Colon CFR phase, and number of prior endoscopies. Following imputation to complete CRC stage information, adjustment for CRC stage was examined. RESULTS: A total of 7202 CRC cases, including 250 cases of IBD-associated CRC, were analyzed. Over a twelve year follow-up period following CRC diagnosis, 2013 and 74 deaths occurred among non-IBD associated CRC and IBD-associated CRC patients, respectively. The difference in survival between IBD-associated and non-IBD CRC cases was not statistically significant (aHR = 1.08; 95%CI: 0.85-1.36). However, the assumption of proportional hazards necessary for valid inference from Cox regression was not met over the entire follow-up period, and we therefore limited analyses to within five years after CRC diagnosis when the assumption of proportional hazards was met. Over this period, there was evidence of worse prognosis for IBD-associated CRC (aHR = 1.36; 95%CI: 1.05-1.76). Results were similar when adjusted for CRC stage, or restricted to IBD confirmed in medical records. CONCLUSION: These results support the hypothesis that IBD-associated CRC has a worse prognosis than non-IBD-associated CRC.

Poaching as well as loss of habitat and prey are identified as causes of tiger population *** some studies have examined habitat requirements and prey availability,few studies have quantified cause-specific mortality of *** used cumulative incidence functions(CIFs)to quantify cause-specific mortality rates of tigers,expanding and refining earlier studies to assess the potential impact of a newly emerging *** quantify changes in tiger mortality over time,we re-examined data first collected by Goodrich et al.(2008;study period 1:1992–2004)as well as new telemetry data collected since January 2005(study period 2:2005–2012)using a total of 57 tigers(27 males and 30 females)monitored for an average of 747 days(range 26–4718 days).Across the entire study period(1992 to 2012)we found an estimated average annual survival rate of 0.75 for all tigers *** was the primary cause of mortality during both study periods,followed by suspected poaching,distemper and natural/unknown *** 2005,poaching mortality has remained relatively constant and,if combined with suspected poaching,may account for a loss of 17–19%of the population each *** distemper virus(CDv)may be an additive form of mortality to the population,currently accounting for an additional 5%.Despite this relatively new source of mortality,poaching remains the main threat to Amur tiger survival and,therefore,population growth.

纳米尺度线宽的测量广泛应用于半导体制造、数据存储、微机电系统等领域。随着制造技术的进步,线宽的极限尺寸也变得越来越小,目前已经缩小至100 nm左右。在这一尺度范围内,由于样本制造技术的限制和测量仪器的影响,目前很难得到准确的测量结果。为了获得样本的真实几何尺寸信息,剔除测量方法和仪器本身对测量结果的影响,建立了一个基于AFM测量技术的线宽计量模型和相应算法。该模型将被测样本的截面轮廓用20个关键点分成5个部分共19段,用基于最小二乘的直线来拟合实际轮廓。应用该模型和算法可以分别得到单刻线轮廓拟合前后的顶部线宽b_T、b_(TF),中部线宽b_M、b_(MF),底部线宽b_B、b_(BF),左右边墙角A_L、A_R,以及高度h_。使用NanoScope Ⅲa型AFM对一个单晶硅(Si)线宽样本进行了测量,测量结果表明该模型和算法可以满足纳米尺度线宽计量的基本要求。

Potential of capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry for the characterization and monitoring of amine-derivatized naphthenic acids from oil sands process-affected water

Capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry（CE–MS） was used for the analysis of naphthenic acid fraction compounds（NAFCs） of oil sands process-affected water（OSPW）. A standard mixture of amine-derivatized naphthenic acids is injected directly onto the CE column and analyzed by CE–MS in less than 15 min. Time of flight MS analysis（TOFMS）, optimized for high molecular weight ions, showed NAFCs between 250 and 800 m/z. With a quadrupole mass analyzer, only low-molecular weight NAFCs（between 100 and 450 m/z） are visible under our experimental conditions. Derivatization of NAFCs consisted of two-step amidation reactions mediated by 1-ethyl-3-（3-dimethylaminopropyl）carbodiimide（EDC）, or mediated by a mixture of EDC and N-hydroxysuccinimide, in dimethyl sulfoxide, dichloromethane or ethyl acetate. The optimum background electrolyte composition was determined to be 30%（v/v） methanol in water and 2%（v/v） formic acid. NAFCs extracted from OSPW in the Athabasca oil sands region were used to demonstrate the feasibility of CE–MS for the analysis of NAFCs in environmental samples, showing that the labeled naphthenic acids are in the mass range of 350 to 1500 m/z.

A Biomimetic Approach to Robot Locomotion in Unstructured and Slippery Environments

While much attention has been given to bio-robotics in recent years, not much of this has been given to the challenging subject of locomotion in slippery conditions. This study begins to rectify this by proposing a biomimetic approach to generating the friction required to give sufficient propulsive force on a slippery substrate. We took inspiration from a successful biological solution-that of applying hair-like structures to the propulsive appendages, similar to the setae found in nereid polychaetes living in muddy habitats. We began by examining the morphology and the mean locomotion parameters of one of the most common nereids.. Nereis diversicolor. Following this study, we designed and fabricated a robotic system with appendages imitating the biological shape found in the worm. A flexible control system was developed to allow most of the locomotion parameters observed in the real worm to be applied to the robot. Experiments on three different natural substrates ranging from fine sand to gravel showed that, whereas a plate attached to the appendage generated most thrust on a small particle substrate, a bundle of artificial setae attached to the appendage generated most thrust on a large particle substrate. On all types of substrate tested, an appendage without any attachment did significantly worse than one with. This suggests that hair-like structures can be advantageous.

Genitourinary toxicity after pelvic radiation:Prospective review of complex urological presentations

ObjectiveRecent randomised controlled trials underestimated the incidence of genitourinary (GU) complications occurring more than 5 years following pelvic radiotherapy. This study aimed to determine the burden of treatment at a single institution from late GU complications after pelvic *** prospective study of all presentations for GU complications following pelvic radiotherapy at a tertiary urology department between November 2018 and November 2019 was performed. Subgroup analyses was performed on patients with prostate cancer (PCa) with late toxicity to compare patient demographics, radiotherapy, complications, and management *** were 117 hospital encounters involving 46 patients with a 56.4% repeat encounter rate. Patients with PCa were the predominant group (n=39, 84.8%). External beam radiotherapy was the most common treatment modality (n=41, 89.1%). The median time from radiotherapy to encounter was 8 (range 0–23) years. Radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis was the most common presentation (n=70, 59.8%). Forty-four (42.7%) encounters for GU toxicity were managed operatively and 33 (32.0%) involved a non-operative procedure. Nine patients required packed red cell transfusion, with a total of 154 units transfused. Patients with PCa who presented with late GU toxicity had higher median Radiotherapy Oncology Group grades (p=0.020), proportion of emergency admissions (p=0.047), and frequency of clot urinary retention (pve and emergency urology workload attributed to late pelvic radiation toxicity. Late GU toxicity occurring ≥5 years after radiotherapy is common and often more severe.

The petrogenesis of modern and ophiolitic lavas reconsidered:Ti-v and Nb-Th

Tectonic discrimination diagrams are a key tool for understanding ancient volcanic rock *** this contribution we compile over 15,000 whole rock compositions to re-evaluate the Ti-v discrimination diagram and compare it to another commonly used tool,the Nb/Yb-Th/Yb *** have reformulated the Ti-v diagram into a log-log plot to distinguish samples more clearly at lower *** compilation shows that MORB are dominated by Ti/v=20-43,whereas juvenile arc tholeiites and boninites are characterized by Ti/vverlap at the boundary(Ti/v=20-22).Plume-related volcanic rocks(ocean island basalts,oceanic plateaux,and continental flood basalts)generally have Ti/v>43,although there may be significant overlap with MORB-like ratios for ridgecentered OIB and for some oceanic *** 56%of alkaline OIB have Ti/v>***-arc basins are dominantly *** models show that MORB and juvenile arc volcanics most likely formed under different fO;conditions,but are permissive of similar fO_(2)if the arc rocks form by much higher melt *** Nb/Yb ***/Yb plot clearly distinguishes most oceanic basalts(MORB,plateaux,OIB)from subduction-related volcanic rocks(boninite,juvenile arc tholeiite,calc-alkaline)and from flood *** propose here a new two-proxy diagram of Ti/v ***/Nb,which incorporates the advantages of both.

Molecular mechanism behind the therapeutic potential of pigeon pea over the human diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis,breast cancer,type II diabetes,malaria,measles and sickle cell disease were revealed through docking of GC–MS identified phyto-compound ligands with candidate disease *** the 242 ligands,three dimensional structures of 47 compounds had to be drawn using ChemSketch and the remaining structures were retrieved from PubChem and docked with the active sites of candidate *** molecules identified through docking were further subjected to ADMET analysis and promising drug candidates were identified for each *** paper presents a precise account of the chemoprofile of pigeon pea leaves,stems and seeds,interaction of these molecules with target proteins and suggests 26 highly potential molecules which are drug candidates for multiple human *** pea seeds are especially proven as invaluable source for therapeutic molecules.
