Complete mesocolic excision(CME) for the treatment of colon cancer was first introduced in the West in 2008. The first aim of this procedure is to remove the afflicted colon and its accessory lymphovascular supply by resecting the colon and mesocolon in an intact envelope of visceral peritoneum, which holds potentiallyinvolved lymph nodes. The second component of CME is a central vascular tie to remove completely all lymph nodes in the central(vertical) direction. In its original iteration, CME was performed via laparotomy, although many centers preferentially perform laparoscopic surgery, with its associated benefits and similar oncolo-gical outcomes, as the standard treatment for colonic cancer. Here, we present the surgical techniques for CME in open and laparoscopic surgery, as well as the surgical, pathological and oncological outcomes of the procedure that are available to date. Because there are no randomized control trials comparing CME to "standard" colon surgery, the principles underlying CME seem anatomical and logical, and the results published from the Far East, reporting an 80% 5-year survival rate for Stage iii cancer, should guide us.

The real-time model-based control of polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM)fuel cells requires a computationally efficient and sufficiently accurate model to predict the transient and long-term performance under various operational conditions,involving the pressure,temperature,humidity,and stoichiometry *** this article,recent progress on the development of PEM fuel cell models that can be used for real-time control is *** major operational principles of PEM fuel cells and the associated mathematical description of the transport and electrochemical phenomena are *** reduced-dimensional physics-based models(pseudo-twodimensional,one-dimensional numerical and zero dimensional analytical models)and the non-physics-based models(zero-dimensional empirical and data-driven models)have been systematically examined,and the comparison of these models has been *** is found that the current trends for the real-time control models are(i)to couple the single cell model with balance of plants to investigate the system performance,(ii)to incorporate aging effects to enable long-term performance prediction,(iii)to increase the computational speed(especially for one-dimensional numerical models),and(iv)to develop data-driven models with artificial intelligence/machine learning *** review will be beneficial for the development of physics or nonphysics based models with sufficient accuracy and computational speed to ensure the real-time control of PEM fuel cells.

The ideal treatment modality for metastatic cancer would be a local treatment that can destroy primary tumors while inducing an effective systemic anti-tumor *** this end,we de-veloped laser immunotherapy,combining photothermal laser application with an immunoadju-vant for the treatment of metastatic ***,to enhance the selective photothermal effect,we integrated light-absorbing nanomaterials into this innovative ***,we developed an immunologically modified carbon nanotube combining single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs)with the immunoadjuvant glycated chitosan(GC).To determine the ef-fectiveness of laser iradiation,a series of experiments were performed using two different irra-diation durations-5 and 10 *** were inoculated with DMBA-4 cancer cells,a metastatic cancer cell *** treatment group of rats receiving laser irradiation for 10 min had a 50%long-term survival rate without residual primary or metastatic *** treatment group of rats receiving laser irradiation for 5 min had no long-term survivors;all rats died with multiple metastases at several distant ***,Laser+SWNT-GC treatment with 10 min of laser irradiation proved to be efective at reducing tumor size and inducing long-term anti-tumor immunity.

The binding of Endonuclease colicin 9 (E9) by Immunity protein 9 (Im9) was found to involve some hotspots from helix iii of Im9 on protein-protein interface that contribute the dominant binding energy to the *** the current work,MD simulations of the WT and three hotspot mutants (D51A,Y54A and Y55A of Im9) of the E9-Im9 complexes were carried out to investigate specific interaction mechanisms of these three hotspot *** changes of binding energy between the WT and mutants of the complex were computed by the MM/PBSA method using a polarized force field and were in excellent agreement with experiment values,verifying that these three residues were indeed hotspots of the binding *** decomposition analysis revealed that binding by D51 to E9 was dominated by electrostatic interaction due to the presence of the carboxyl group of Asp51 which hydrogen bonds to *** binding by hotspots Y54 and Y55,van der Waals interaction from the aromatic side chain of tyrosine provided the dominant *** comparison,calculation by using the standard (nonpolarizable) AMBER99SB force field produced binding energy changes from these mutations in opposite direction to the experimental *** hydrogen bond analysis showed that conformations sampled from MD simulation in the standard AMBER force field were distorted from the native state and they disrupted the inter-protein hydrogen bond network of the protein-protein *** current work further demonstrated that electrostatic polarization plays a critical role in modulating protein-protein binding.

Bird damage is a problem in sorghum breeding and germplasm maintenance operations. Paper pollination bags are damaged by rain and provide only a minimal deterrent to birds. To overcome these limitations we fabricated pollination bags from spun polyethylene fiber sheeting. No seed yield difference was found between plants bagged with either spun polyethylene or paper. Seed loss by bird damage was nearly eliminated under the polyethylene bags. In areas where bird damage is problematic bird resistant pollination bags can allow for a reduction in the plot size required for breeding and germplasm maintenance operations, increase the productivity of such operations as genetic diversity per unit land area, and make direct measurement of seed yield possible in agronomic field experiments.

Potential Biomarkers of Schizophrenia from MEG Resting-State Functional Connectivity Networks: Preliminary Data

Previous studies examining coherence and connectivity deviations in schizophrenia patients relied on standard coherence measures between recording sites (at the sensor level). A coherence source imaging (CSI) methodology where coherence is assessed within imaged brain structures (at the source level) was developed recently by our group and applied successfully for detecting coherent areas in the cortical networks of patients with epilepsy. We applied this Magnetoencephalography (MEG)-CSI technique to measure normal and pathological patterns of brain oscillations (biomarkers) in normal subjects and patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Twelve patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and twelve healthy control subjects were studied. A ten-minute resting state MEG brain scan was performed with eyes open. MEG-CSI analysis was performed to identify the cortical areas that interacted strongly within the 3 - 50 Hz frequency range. Statistically significant increased regions of coherence were detected in schizophrenia patients compared to controls in the right inferior frontal gyrus (BA 47—pars orbitalis), left superior frontal gyrus (BA9— dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), right middle frontal gyrus (BA 10—anterior prefrontal cortex & BA 46—dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), and right cingulate gyrus (BA 24—ventral anterior cingulate cortex). These areas are involved in language, memory, decision making, empathy, executive and, higher cognitive functioning. We conclude that MEG-CSI can detect imaging biomarkers from resting state brain activity in schizophrenia patients that deviates from normal control subjects in several behaviorally salient brain regions. Analysis with MEG-CSI can provide biomarkers of abnormalities in the resting-state. The findings and procedures described can be used to probe the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and possibly detect subtypes.
