Previous studies have demonstrated the important role of taurine in inhibiting proliferation of myofibrob lasts（myoFb） and myocardial fibrosis. However, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The present study was de signed to shed light on this issue through exploring the signal pathways via in vitro experiments. Angiotension II （AngII） treatment significantly increased myoFb proliferation and the levels of collagens I and iii（P〈0.05）, whereas taurine, PKCα（PKC： protein kinase C） specific inhibitor L-threo-dihydro-sphingosine（D4681）, ERK1/2 inhibitor （PD98095） abrogated myoFb proliferation and collagen levels（P〈0.05, P〈0.01, respectively）, and increased the G0/G1 phase rate and decreased S phase rate. Immunocytochemistry, confocal fluorescence staining and image analy sis showed that taurine could inhibit the translocation and expression of p-PKCαin membrane, and then inhibit nuc lear translocation and expression of p-ERK1/2. These results have statistically significant differences compared with those of AngII group（P〈0.01）. Western blot results also show that taurine could inhibit the protein expression of p-PKCα and p-ERK1/2. We used p-PKCα specific inhibitor D4681 in order to elucidate the relationship between p-PKCα and p-ERK1/2 in signal transduction pathways. Finally, the results show that the protein expression of p-ERK1/2 and nuclear translocation were suppressed in D4681 group.

Until recently, computational power was insufficient to diagonalize atmospheric datasets of order 108 - 109 elements. Eigenanalysis of tens of thousands of variables now can achieve massive data compression for spatial fields with strong correlation properties. Application of eigenanalysis to 26,394 variable dimensions, for three severe weather datasets (tornado, hail and wind) retains 9 - 11 principal components explaining 42% - 52% of the variability. Rotated principal components (RPCs) detect localized coherent data variance structures for each outbreak type and are related to standardized anomalies of the meteorological fields. Our analyses of the RPC loadings and scores show that these graphical displays can efficiently reduce and interpret large datasets. Data is analyzed 24 hours prior to severe weather as a forecasting aid. RPC loadings of sea-level pressure fields show different morphology loadings for each outbreak type. Analysis of low level moisture and temperature RPCs suggests moisture fields for hail and wind which are more related than for tornado outbreaks. Consequently, these patterns can identify precursors of severe weather and discriminate between tornadic and non-tornadic outbreaks.

Monolithic integration of quantum dot(QD)gain materials onto Si photonic platforms via direct epitaxial growth is a promising solution for on-chip light *** developments have demonstrated superior device reliability in blanket hetero-epitaxy ofⅡ-Ⅴdevices on Si at elevated ***,thick,defect management epi designs prevent vertical light coupling from the gain region to the Si-on-lnsulator ***,we demonstrate the frst electrically pumped QD lasers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a 300 mm patterned(001)Si wafer with a buttcoupled *** growth and fabrication challenges imposed by the template architecture have been resolved,contributing to continuous wave lasing to 60℃and a maximum double-side output power of 126.6 mW at 20℃with a double-side wall-plug efficiency of 8.6%.The potential for robust on-chip laser operation and effcient lowloss light coupling to Si photonic circuits makes this heteroepitaxial integration platform on Si promising for scalable and low-cost mass production.

Prognostic factors for survival after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer: meta-analysis

Background: In advanced disease current practice is staging and primary debulking laparotomy followed by platinum-based chemotherapy. The effort to achieve ‘optimal debulking’ is associated with a complication risk of 8% - 63% and a mortality rate of 1% - 6%. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been proposed as an alternative option. Objectives: This meta-analysis aimed to determine prognostic factors influencing survival in patients with advanced ovarian cancer following neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Search Strategy: Clinical trials citing the terms ‘advanced ovarian cancer’, ‘ovarian cancer’, ‘neoadjuvant chemotherapy’ and ‘surgery’ were identified by searching Pubmed and ScienceDirect between January 1st 2000 and September 30th 2010. Data Collection and analysis: The trials included used platinum-based chemotherapy and involved stage iii/IV disease that underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery. Prognostic variables were identified for analysis including number/type of chemotherapy, % stage IV disease, % maximal cytoreductive surgery and whether a lymphadenectomy was performed. The % bowel surgery and ultra-radical surgery was also analysed. Main Results: Twenty six trials were identified as suitable for analysis and included 3 non-randomised Phase II studies, 2 retrospective case-control studies, 17 from retrospective analysis and 1 RCT. A significant association between taxane use vs platinum only (p = 0.019), year of publication (p = 0.032), % maximal interval cytoreduction (p = 0.046) and median overall survival was identified. No significant survival benefit was demonstrated with number of chemotherapy cycles (p = 0.065), lymphadenectomy (p = 0.813) and % bowel surgery performed (p = 0.606). Conclusions: The addition of taxane and % maximal cytoreduction achieved is associated with improved overall survival. There is, however no evidence that lymphadenectomy, number of chemotherapy cycles or bowel surgery influences survival.

The mode-locked laser diode has emerged as a promising candidate as a signal source for photonic radar systems,wireless data transmission, and frequency comb spectroscopy. They have the advantages of small size, low cost,high reliability, and low power consumption, thanks to semiconductor technology. Mode-locked lasers based on silicon photonics advance these qualities by the use of highly advanced silicon manufacturing technology. This paper will begin by giving an overview of mode-locked laser diode literature, and then focus on mode-locked lasers on silicon. The dependence of mode-locked laser performance on design details is presented.

Non-oriented electrical steel is by far the most widely used soft magnetic material. It has evolved over the past 100 years and is likely to remain prominent for decades to come despite the challenge for greater market share from emerging materials. However complex ways in which the steels are magnetised in modern electrical equipment are rapidly becoming more common in many applications so it is useful to review the parameters which control their magnetic properties and consider the growing need for optimising the magnetic properties under more challenging magnetisation conditions such as high flux density, rotational magnetisation or non-sinusoidal flux density. The presentation reviews the reasons for the dominating influence of composition（silicon content）, grain size, internal stress, impurities, sheet thickness and texture. Although the generality of the well know method of analysing losses in terms of hysteresis, classical eddy current and excess losses is often questioned today, it is still a useful approach for attempting to understand the factors influencing the losses in non-oriented steels. However, the effectiveness of the approach under these more challenging magnetising conditions is discussed. It is likely that users will demand far more versatility from non-oriented materials in the future in terms of effective operation under wide ranges of magnetisation conditions which make the relevance of established Standard ways of grading materials at a fixed frequency and flux density questionable when selecting best material for a given purpose. The inference of this situation on material development is briefly discussed. Finally the possible impact of future developments in controlled textures or resistivity gradients through the sheet thickness on the performance of energy efficient non-oriented materials operating on under more complex magnetising conditions is considered.

Evaluation of Source Rock Potential for Hydrocarbon Generation in Shallow Offshore, Lamu Basin, Kenya

The ever-increasing demand for oil and gas has driven its exploration in rather extreme conditions. In Lamu offshore, which is hitherto underexplored, most of the wells already drilled turned out dry save for a few wells with hydrocarbon shows despite the promising reservoir properties and related geological structures. This, therefore, necessitated a source rock evaluation study in the area to ascertain the presence and potential of the source rock by integrating the geochemical data analysis and petroleum system modeling. The shallow Lamu offshore source rock quantity, quality, and maturity have been estimated through the determination of the total organic carbon (TOC) average values, Kerogen typing, and Rock-Eval pyrolysis measurements respectively. Geochemical data for Kubwa-1, Mbawa-1, Pomboo-1, and Simba-1 were evaluated for determining the source rock potential for hydrocarbon generation. Petroleum system modeling was applied in evaluating geological conditions necessary for a successful charge within a software that integrated geochemical and petrophysical characterization of the sedimentary formations in conjunction with boundary conditions that include basal heat flow, sediment-water interface temperature, and Paleo-water depth. The average TOC of 0.89 wt % in the study area suggests a fair organic richness which seems higher in the late cretaceous (0.98 wt %) than in the Paleocene (0.81 wt %). Vitrinite reflectance and Tmax values in the study area indicate the possible presence of both mature and immature source rocks. Type iii Kerogen was the most dominant Kerogen type, and gas shows are the most frequent hydrocarbon encountered in the Lamu Basin with a few cases registering type II/iii and type II. The charge properties (i.e. Temperature, transformation ratio, and Vitrinite reflectance) over geologic time at each of the wells have been estimated and their spatial variation mapped as seen from the burial history and depth curves overlaid with

Intrauterine diagnosis of small intestinal volvulus is extremely rare;a small bowel volvulus may be caused, by an atresia or malrotation, and it can also be an etiology for intestinal atresia. Early antenatal diagnosis of fetal intestinal volvulus is difficult. Care full and meticulous prenatal radiological investigations in the experience hand may suggest the diagnosis. We present a male child who presented 9 hours after birth with gangrenous proximal dilated loop volvulus in a type iii B intestinal atresia diagnosed intraoperative and was treated successfully. Presence of focal abdominal wall edema in a newborn with intestinal obstruction may suggest this diagnosis.
