Assessing habitat quality of the mountain nyala Tragelaphus buxtoni in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia

Populations of the endangered mountain nyala Tragelaphus buxtoni are significantly threatened by the loss of critical habitat. Population estimates are tentative, and information on the species＇ distribution and available habitat is required for for-mulating immediate management and conservation strategies. To support management decisions and conservation priorities, we integrated information from a number of small-scale observational studies, interviews and reports from multiple sources to define habitat parameters and create a habitat quality model for mountain nyala in the Bale Mountains. For our analysis, we used the FunConn model, an expertise-based model that considers spatial relationships （i.e., patch size, distance） between the species and vegetation type, topography and disturbance to create a habitat quality surface. The habitat quality model showed that approxi- mately 18,610 km^2 （82.7% of our study area） is unsuitable or poor habitat for the mountain nyala, while 2,857 km^2 （12.7%） and 1,026 km^2 （4.6%） was ranked as good or optimal habitat, respectively. Our results not only reflected human induced habitat deg-radation, but also revealed an extensive area of intact habitat on the remote slopes of the Bale Mountain＇s southern and southeast- ern escarpments. This study provides an example of the roles that expert knowledge can still play in modem geospatial modeling of wildlife habitat. New geospatial tools, such as the FunConn model, are readily available to wildlife managers and allow them to perform spatial analyses with minimal software, data and training requirements. This approach may be especially useful for species that are obscure to science or when field surveys are not practical .

Consistent constitutive modeling of metallic target penetration using empirical, analytical, and numerical penetration models

Historically, there has been little correlation between the material properties used in(1) empirical formulae,(2) analytical formulations, and(3) numerical models. The various regressions and models may each provide excellent agreement for the depth of penetration into semi-infinite targets. But the input parameters for the empirically based procedures may have little in common with either the analytical model or the numerical model. This paper builds on previous work by Riegel and Anderson(2014) to show how the Effective Flow Stress(EFS) strength model, based on empirical data, can be used as the average flow stress in the analytical Walker–Anderson Penetration model(WAPEN)(Anderson and Walker,1991) and how the same value may be utilized as an effective von Mises yield strength in numerical hydrocode simulations to predict the depth of penetration for eroding projectiles at impact velocities in the mechanical response regime of the materials. The method has the benefit of allowing the three techniques(empirical, analytical, and numerical) to work in tandem. The empirical method can be used for many shot line calculations, but more advanced analytical or numerical models can be employed when necessary to address specific geometries such as edge effects or layering that are not treated by the simpler methods. Developing complete constitutive relationships for a material can be costly. If the only concern is depth of penetration, such a level of detail may not be required. The effective flow stress can be determined from a small set of depth of penetration experiments in many cases, especially for long penetrators such as the L/D = 10 ones considered here, making it a very practical approach. In the process of performing this effort, the authors considered numerical simulations by other researchers based on the same set of experimental data that the authors used for their empirical and analytical assessment. Palladium Nanoparticles Loaded on Carbon Modified TiO_2 Nanobelts for Enhanced Methanol Electrooxidation

Carbon modified TiO_2 nanobelts(TiO_2-C) were synthesized using a hydrothermal growth method,as a support material for palladium(Pd) nanoparticles(Pd/TiO_2-C) to improve the electrocatalytic performance for methanol electrooxidation by comparison to Pd nanoparticles on bare TiO_2 nanobelts(Pd/TiO_2)and activated carbon(Pd/AC). Cyclic voltammetry characterization was conducted with respect to saturated calomel electrode(SCE) in an alkaline methanol solution, and the results indicate that the specific activity of Pd/TiO_2-C is 2.2 times that of Pd/AC and 1.5 times that of Pd/TiO_2. Chronoamperometry results revealed that the TiO_2-C support was comparable in stability to activated carbon, but possesses an enhanced current density for methanol oxidation at a potential of -0.2 V vs. SCE. The current study demonstrates the potential of Pd nanoparticle loaded on hierarchical TiO_2-C nanobelts for electrocatalytic applications such as fuel cells and batteries.

Pain management for the Nuss procedure: comparison between erector spinae plane block, thoracic epidural, and control

Resolution of hemolysis from pump thrombus during left ventricular assist device exchange

A 50-year-old male who underwent a Heart Mate Ⅱ left ventricular assist device placement for ischemic cardiomyopathy presented with discolored urine and hemolysis 3 mo after the operation. His hemolysis was thought to be due to thrombosis within the pump. Imaging studies were not able to visualize a left ventricular thrombus. Medical management with anticoagulation failed and he underwent surgery for a pump exchange. Intraoperatively, a firm thrombus was found within the pump of the Heart Mate Ⅱ, and the color of the urine changed dramatically from cola-colored to yellow which enabled us to confirm the diagnosis.

AIM: To further define variables associated with increased incidences of severe toxicities following administration of yttrium-90 (90Y) ***: Fifty-eight patients undergoing 79 treatments were retrospectively assessed for development of clinical and laboratory toxicity incidence following 90Y administration. Severe toxicity events were defined using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03 and defined as grade ≥ 3. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the effect of different factors on the incidence of severe toxicity events. Multicollinearity was assessed for all factors with P 90Y microsphere therapy.

Clinical characteristics of young patients with early Barrett’s neoplasia

BACKGROUND Esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC)and high-grade dysplasia(HGD)may appear in young patients with Barrett's esophagus(BE).However,characteristics of Barrett's-related neoplasia in this younger population remain *** To identify clinical characteristics that differ between young and old patients with early-stage Barrett's-related *** We conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database comprised of consecutive patients with early-stage EAC(pT1)and HGD at a tertiary-referral center between 2001 and *** characteristics,drug and risk factor exposures,clinicopathological staging of EAC/HGD and treatment outcomes[complete eradication of neoplasia(CE-N),complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia(CE-IM),recurrence of neoplasia and recurrence of intestinal metaplasia]were *** analyses were performed to identify factors that differed significantly between older and younger(≤50 years)*** We identified 450 patients with T1 EAC and HGD(74%and 26%,respectively);45(10%)were≤50 *** to the older group,young patients were more likely to present with ongoing gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)symptoms(55%vs 38%,P=0.04)and to be obese(body mass index>30,48%vs 32%,P=0.04).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that young patients were significantly more likely to have ongoing GERD symptoms[odds ratio(OR)2.00,95%confidence interval(CI)1.04-3.85,P=0.04]and to be obese(OR 2.06,95%CI 1.07-3.98,P=0.03)whereas the young group was less likely to have a smoking history(OR 0.39,95%CI 0.20-0.75,P50 years of age,younger patients should be considered for screening endoscopy if they suffer from obesity and GERD symptoms.
