Comparison of sucrose intake and production of elimination spots among adult Musca domestica, Musca autumnalis, Phormia regina and Protophormia terraenovae

Objective: To compare the differences in intake and excretion between Musca domestica and other three species from families Muscidae and Calliphoridae which may help explaining the significance of house fly in the transmission of ***: The four adult species were supplied with two concentrations of sucrose via modified capillary feeder assay system. The two sucrose concentrations were applied to one adult male/each experiment and the elimination spots were counted. Using 0.25 mol/L sucrose + 0.25% bromophenol blue, one active non-starved male/cup was observed carefully for 1 h to record its behavior. As a growing medium used in bacterial transmission experiments, undiluted trypticase soy broth was used to feed 3-day-old females and males of Musca domestica following two different diets upon emergence and the frequency of elimination spots was ***: The two Musca species have half the weight of the two Phormia *** the volume of intake per hour, house fly took as much as the other species, all of which were larger. House fly produced twice, or more, the number of elimination spots/h than the other three species. Feeding the flies a sugar liquid diet resulted in producing more fecal spots than regurgitation spots. The male house flies produced less elimination spots/h when fed with trypticase soy broth than with the two sucrose ***: House flies eliminated more than the other examined fly species and most of these elimination events were defecation which implicates the fecal route for pathogen transmission by this important vector.

Development of a 3D model for particle-wall collision and induced rotation and its influence on particle trajectories

The present research focuses on improving the prediction of rotating particle *** particle-surface collision models do not accurately predict the particle rebound when taking rotation into *** data,such as the studies by Gorham and Kharaz(2000),Buck,Tang,Heinrich,Deen and Kuipers(2017),and Dong and Moys(2006)show that the Tsuji,Oshima and Morikawa(1985)model is inaccurate due to the incorrect tangential coefficient of restitution ***,Kuipers,Mohd Salleh,Stein,and Seville(2001)introduced a similar model to the work by Tsuji et al.(1985)which includes a tangential coefficient of restitution but is only in two dimensions and does not consider out of plane *** work re-derives the particle collision model from the impulse equations for binary collisions in 3D while considering rotating *** derived equations in this work compares well to experimental particle-surface impact *** implications of this model are seen by investigating erosion due to particle collision in a simple pipe *** is shown that Tsuji et al.(1985)over predicts the *** small differences in particle trajectories between the present model and the Tsuji et al.(1985)model will grow in complex flows with multiple close range particle impacts leading to inaccurate erosion predictions which will negatively impact the design of turbomachinery and pneumatic pipes.

Hepatocellular carcinoma in chronic hepatitis B patients under antiviral therapy

Patients with chronic hepatitis B are at increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),while the inhibition of viral replication can represent a reasonable target for HCC ***-αtherapy results in decreased HCC risk,which is more evident in patients with high baseline HCC *** majority of chronic hepatitis B patients are treated with a nucleos(t)ide analogue(NA)for several reasons including the nonsustained response after interferon-α.The effect of the first licensed and low genetic barrier NA,lamivudine,on HCC incidence,has been repeatedly ***,compared to no treatment,reduces the HCC incidence,which may increase again in cases with lamivudine *** data with the currently first-line NAs,entecavir and tenofovir,suggest that they also reduce the HCC *** treatment benefit in reduction of the HCC incidence is always greater in patients with high baseline HCC risk,particularly cirrhotics,and without virological remission under entecavir/***,the HCC risk is not eliminated even in the vast majority of patients who remain in virological remission under entecavir/***,patients at increased baseline HCC risk should continue to undergo HCC surveillance even if they have achieved complete long-term inhibition of viral replication and improvements in liver histology.

Standard manual capsulorhexis / Ultrasound phacoemulsification compared to femtosecond laser-assisted capsulorhexis and lens fragmentation in clear cornea small incision cataract surgery

Background:Femtosecond-laser assisted clear cornea cataract surgery may hold promise in safer and more effective *** decided to perform a comparative study to standard manual incision phacoemulsification ***:This is a single-center,single-intervention,and prospective comparative data evaluation of 133 consecutive cases subjected to cataract ***-A(Phaco),manual capsulorhexis&ultrasound phacoemulsification(n=66);Group-B femtosecond-laser assisted capsulorhexis and lens fragmentation(n=67),employing the LenSx laser(Alcon Surgical,***,TX).All cases were evaluated for refraction,visual acuity,keratometry,tomography,pachymetry,endothelial cell counts,intraocular pressure,and type of intraocular lens(IOL)*** groups were matched for age,gender,pre-operative vision metrics,and cataract grade,and were followed up to 1 ***:In group-A post-operative uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA)was 20/20 or better in 61.5%and 20/25 or better in 78.5%of the *** femtosecond laser group-B had improved outcomes(p=0.075 and p=0.042,respectively):post-operative UDVA was 20/20 or better in 62.7%of the eyes and 20/25 or better in 85.1%.Linear regression scatterplots of achieved versus attempted spherical equivalent had excellent regression coefficients(r^(2)=0.983 in group-A and 0.979 in group-B).There were 75.2%cases in group-A and 80.6%in group-B(p=0.8732)within±0.50 D of targeted refractive *** trend of under-correction was noted in *** residual manifest cylinder in the toric subgroup-A was-0.50 D(95%Limit-of-Agreement(LoA)=-0.78 D),and in toric subgroup-B-0.45 D(LoA=-0.45 D).Conclusions:Mean spherical equivalent refraction and visual acuity are comparable with laser cataract surgery compared with manual capsulorhexis&ultrasound *** astigmatism correction may be among the benefits of femtosecond laser–assisted cataract *** corneal edema may be a first day transient

Paleoecological Response of Corals to the End-Triassic Mass Extinction： An Integrational Analysis

The end-Triassic （also Triassic-Jurassic） mass extinction severely affected life on planet Earth 200 million years ago. Paleoclimate change triggered by the volcanic eruptions of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province （CAMP） caused a great loss of marine biodiversity, among which 96% coral genera were get lost. However, there is precious little detail on the paleoecology and growth forms lost between the latest Triassic extinction and the Early Jurassic recovery. Here a new pilot study was conducted by analyzing corallite integration levels among corals from the latest Triassic and Early Jurassic times. Integration levels in corals from the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic were determined through both the Paleobiology Database as well as from a comprehensive museum collection of fossil corals. Results suggest that in addition to a major loss of diversity following the end-Triassic mass extinction, there also was a significant loss of highly integrated corals as clearly evidenced by the coral data from the Early Jurassic. This confirms our hypothesis of paleoecological selectivity for corals following the end-Triassic mass extinction. This study highlights the importance of assigning sim- ple to advanced paleoecological characters with integration levels, which opens a useful approach to understanding of mass extinction and the dynamics of the recovery.

Emerging complexity and new roles for the RIG-I-like receptors in innate antiviral immunity

Innate immunity is critical for the control of virus infection and operates to restrict viral susceptibility and direct antiviral immunity for protection from acute or chronic viral-associated diseases including cancer. RIG-I like receptors(RLRs) are cytosolic RNA helicases that function as pathogen recognition receptors to detect RNA pathogen associated molecular patterns(PAMPs) of virus infection. The RLRs include RIG-I, MDA5, and LGP2. They function to recognize and bind to PAMP motifs within viral RNA in a process that directs the RLR to trigger downstream signaling cascades that induce innate immunity that controls viral replication and spread. Products of RLR signaling also serve to modulate the adaptive immune response to infection. Recent studies have additionally connected RLRs to signaling cascades that impart inflammatory and apoptotic responses to virus infection. Viral evasion of RLR signaling supports viral outgrowth and pathogenesis, including the onset of viral-associated cancer.

Pancreatic insulinoma:current issues and trends

BACKGROUND:Although insulinomas are very rare tumors, they are the most common pancreatic neuroendocrine *** incidence in general population is 1-4 per 1 000 000 yearly but the incidence is higher in autopsy studies. The malignancy of insulinomas is difficult to be predicted on the basis of their histological features,and the current WHO classification has been *** review aimed to summarize classical knowledge with current trends in the diagnosis and treatment of insulinomas. DATA SOURCES:A Medline search using terms'insulinoma', 'treatment'and'neuroendocrine tumors'was conducted. Additional references were sourced from key articles. RESULTS:Surgery is the treatment of choice for insulinoma and has an extremely high success *** treatment is also available but only for patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo surgical *** localization is necessary for planning the surgical *** methods exist for localization of an insulinoma and can be invasive and *** combination of biphasic thin section helical CT and endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)has an almost 100% sensitivity in localizing *** ultrasound is mandatory to localize intraoperatively these ***-guided fine needle tattoing is an alternative method of localization in case of lack of laparoscopic ultrasound. CONCLUSION:Laparoscopic resection for benign insulinomas is the procedure of choice,whereas pancreatectomy is reserved for large,potentially malignant tumors.

Can a multistage approach improve individual tree mortality predictions across the complex mixed-species and managed forests of eastern North America?

Tree mortality plays a fundamental role in the dynamics of forest ecosystems,yet it is one of the most difficult phenomena to accurately *** modeling strategies have been developed to improve individual tree mortality *** less explored strategy is the use of a multistage modeling *** improvements from this approach have remained largely *** this study,we developed a novel multistage approach and compared its performance in individual tree mortality predictions with a more conventional approach using an identical individual tree mortality model *** permanent plot data(n=9442)covering the Acadian Region of North America and over multiple decades(1965–2014)were used in this *** results indicated that the model behavior with the multistage approach better depicted the observed mortality and showed a notable improvement over the conventional *** difference between the observed and predicted numbers of dead trees using the multistage approach was much smaller when compared with the conventional *** addition,tree survival probabilities predicted by the multistage approach generally were not significantly different from the observations,whereas the conventional approach consistently underestimated mortality across species and overestimated tree survival probabilities over the large range of DBH in the *** new multistage approach also predictions of zero mortality in individual plots,a result not possible in conventional ***,the new approach was more tolerant of modeling errors because it based estimates on ranked tree mortality rather than error-prone predicted ***,this new multistage approach deserves to be considered and tested in future studies.

Alternative expressions for stand diameter in complex forests

Quadratic mean diameter is the most frequently reported descriptor of the diameter distribution of *** such,it is often used as an indicator of forest stand structure,developmental stage,and ecological and economic ***,quadratic mean diameter can be heavily influenced by the presence or absence of large numbers of small stems in lower canopy strata,and it is also sensitive to left-truncation of the diameter distribution,making its interpretation across inventories with different protocols ***,we examine three alternative expressions of stand diameter:the arithmetic and quadratic mean diameter of the thickest 100 trees per hectare,and the basal area-weighted mean *** data from the United States Forest Inventory and Analysis program for New York and New England,these alternative expressions showed closer correlation with multiple stand structural variables than did quadratic mean diameter,including merchantable cubic and board foot volume per hectare,aboveground live tree carbon per hectare,and total number of live and dead standing trees greater than 40 cm diameter at breast height per hectare(previously proposed as an index of old-growth structure).Arithmetic and quadratic mean diameter of the thickest 100 trees per hectare showed nearly identical performance,and the strongest correlations across the *** develop closed-form expressions for these variables when the diameter distribution is a Weibull,and illustrate their behavior relative to quadratic mean diameter for that *** the reasons for prevalence of quadratic mean diameter as an indicator remain valid,we suggest that these alternative measures should be more widely reported and analyzed to give a more informative depiction of stand structure and development in complex forests.
