We d.cument the first record.of Borrelia americana in Canad.. This Borrelia was d.tected.in an avian coast tick, Ixod.s auritulus (Acari: Ixod.d.e), collected.from a Varied.Thrush, Ixoreus naevius, along coastal British Columbia. Using real-time PCR and.d.A sequencing of the flagellin gene, we d.termined.that the borrelial amplicon from the I. auritulus nymph was 99% homologous with B. americana type strain SCW-41. Because patients infected.with B. americana can be seronegative for Lyme d.sease, med.cal professionals should.be willing to pursue molecular analyses and.consid.r treatment for patients with Lyme d.sease-like symptoms.

A joint effort between the Connecticut d.partment of Transportation and.the University of Connecticut has been und.rway for more than 20 years to utilize various structural monitoring approaches to assess d.fferent brid.es in Connecticut. This has been d.ne to d.termine the performance of existing brid.es, refine techniques need.d.to evaluate d.fferent brid.e components, and.d.velop approaches that can be used.to provid. a continuous status of a brid.e＇s structural integrity. This paper briefly introd.ces the background.of these stud.es, with emphasis on recent research and.the d.velopment of structural health monitoring concepts. This paper presents the results from three d.fferent brid.e types： a post-tensioned.curved.concrete box gird.r brid.e, a curved.steel box-gird.r brid.e, and.a steel multi-gird.r brid.e. The structural health monitoring approaches to be d.scussed.have been successfully tested.using field.d.ta collected.d.ring multi-year monitoring period., and.are based.on vibrations, rotations and.strains. The goal has been to d.velop cost-effective strategies to provid. critical information need.d.to manage the State of Connecticut＇s brid.e infrastructure.

Re-evaluation of the post-glacial sea level d.rived.from the Barbad.s coral-reef borings suggests slightly revised.d.pth ranges and.timing of melt-water pulses MWP-1A (96-76 m, 14.3-14.0 ka cal BP) and.1B (58-45 m, 11.5-11.2 ka cal BP), respectively. Ages of non-reef sea-level ind.cators from the Sund. Shelf, the East China Sea and.Yellow Sea for these two intervals are unreliable because of the well-d.cumented.rad.ocarbon ( 14C) plateau, but their vertical clustering correspond. closely with MWP-1A and.1B d.pth ranges. Close correlation of the revised.sea-level curve with Greenland.ice-core d.ta suggests that the 14C plateau may be related.to oceanographic-atmospheric changes d.e to rapid.sea-level rise, fresh-water input, and.impaired.ocean circulation. MWP-1A appears to have occurred.at the end.of Blling Warm Transition, suggesting that the rapid.sea-level rise may have resulted.from lateral heat transport from low to high-latitud. regions and.subsequent abrupt ice-sheet collapses in both North America-Europe and.Antarctica. An around.70 mm a -1 transgression d.ring MWP-1A may have increased.freshwater d.scharge to the North Atlantic by as much as an ord.r of magnitud., thereby d.sturbing thermohaline circulation and.initiating the Old.r d.yas global cooling.

World.id., wild.bird. play a vital role in the d.spersal of ticks that harbour tick-borne pathogens, includ.ng Borrelia burgd.rferi, the Lyme d.sease bacterium. Using PCR testing, we found.124 (31%) of 405 ticks (4 species), which were collected.from 21 species of bird. in far-western Canad., to be infected.with B. burgd.rferi. Transstad.al transmission of B. burgd.rferi occurred.from larva to nymph, plus nymph to ad.lt, in the avian coastal tick, Ixod.s auritulus, collected.from songbird. in British Columbia (B.C). Collectively, all 3 motile life stages (larva, nymph, ad.lt) of this tick had.an infection prevalence of 31% for B. burgd.rferi, which suggests vector competency. A Pacific Wren was highly infested.with I. auritulus immatures, and.20 (44%) of 45 ticks (2 nymphs, 43 larvae) were infected.with B. burgd.rferi. This heavy infestation shows the high potential to initiate a new population of ticks and.to d.sseminate Lyme spirochetes. Epid.miologically, B. burgd.rferi-infected.I. auritulus larvae collected.from the Spotted.Towhee, Swainson’s Thrush, Pacific Wren, and.Fox Sparrow suggest that these avian hosts act as reservoirs for B. burgd.rferi. In this stud., the western blacklegged.tick, Ixod.s pacificus, and.Ixod.s spinipalpis played.a limited.role in the enzootic transmission cycle of B. burgd.rferi along coastal B.C. We d.cument the first record.of I. spinipalpis on a bird.in Alberta. Because songbird. wid.ly d.sperse Lyme d.sease vector ticks, primary health provid.rs and.the general public must be vigilant that outd.ors people may be bitten by B. burgd.rferi-infected.ticks throughout far-western Canad..
