BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has resulted in seismic changes in healthcare *** a result of this,hospital footfall required to be reduced due to increased risk of transmission of *** ensure patients can safely access healthcare,we introduced orthopaedic clinic telephone consultations in our busy district general *** To investigate patients’and clinicians’perspective of telephone consultations during COVID-19,and whether this method of consultation could be a viable option in the post-pandemic *** This is a single centre,prospective study conducted in a busy National Health Service district general *** May 2020,100 non-consecutive adult patients were contacted by independent investigators within 48 h of their orthopaedic clinic telephone consultation to complete a telephone satisfaction *** questions assessed satisfaction regarding various aspects of the consultation including overall satisfaction and willingness to use this approach long *** and perspective of 25 clinicians conducting these telephone consultations was also assessed via an online survey *** 93%of patients were overall satisfied with telephone consultations and 79%were willing to continue this method of consultation *** found telephone consultations to reduce personal cost and inconvenience associated with attending a hospital appointment.72%of clinicians reported overall satisfaction with this service and 80%agreed that telephone consultations should be used in the *** majority found it less laborious in time and administration in comparison to face to face *** and clinicians expressed their desire for video consultations as a method of further improving their experience with remote *** Our study has shown that telephone consultations are a safe and rapid method of adaptation to the COVID-19 pandemic,achieving the aim of reduci

Background The association between substance use including marijuana use and attempted suicide has been well ***,little is known about marijuana use and its association with attempted suicide repetition among young people in low-income and middle-income *** This analysis was conducted to assess the factors associated with marijuana use and ascertain marijuana use as a determinant of repeated attempted suicide among senior high school(SHS)students in *** Data from the 2012 Global School-Based Student Health Survey in Ghana was used for this *** Poisson,Logistic and Probit models weighted with Mahalanobis distance matching within propensity calliper were employed separately to determine the hypothetical association between marijuana use and repeated attempted *** analysis was performed using Stata 16 and p<0.05 was deemed statistically *** The prevalence estimates of marijuana use and repeated attempted suicide among SHS students in Ghana were 3.4%(95%Cl:2.3 to 5.1)and 11.5%(95%Cl:9.1 to 14.4),*** prevalence of marijuana use was significantly associated with school grade,smoking exposure,parent smoker,alcohol intake and *** use was positively associated with repeated attempted suicide among SHS in Ghana correlation=0.23,p<*** attempted suicide among students who use marijuana was approximately threefold and fivefold significant compared with nonmarijuana use students,based on the Poisson(adjusted prevalence ratio:3.02;95%Cl:1.67 to 5.43,p<0.001)and Logistic(adjusted OR:5.06;95%Cl:3.19 to 11.64,p<0.001)estimates ***,the Probit model showed that marijuana use significantly increased the log count of repeated attempted suicide by 95%(ap:0.95;95%CI:0.49 to 1.41,p<0.001).Conclusion Marijuana use does not only influence the onset of suicidal attempts but also repeated attempted suicide among SHS students in *** attention is required for suicide

Objective:To explore antidiabetic principles of the Eastern Nigeria mistletoe,Loranlhus micranthus Linn,parasitic on Persea ***:The weakly acidic fraction of the aqueous methanol extract of the leaves of Loranlhus micranthus(Linn.) was isolated and tested for its antidiabetic *** isolation of the weakly acidic fraction was carried out following established physico-chemical based ***,alloxan-induced diabetic rats were treated intraperitoneally(ip) with 250 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the weakly acidic fraction, glibenclamide 10 mg/kg(positive control) and 2 mg/kg of 3%v/v tween 20(negative control).The sugar levels of the treated and untreated animals were determined by withdrawing the blood at regular intervals and testing them with an automated *** phytochemical analysis of the acidic fraction was carried out using standard *** techniques were employed in the subsequent isolation and purification of the constituents of the weakly acidic ***:It was shown that the maximum effect of the weakly acidic fraction was obtained at 24 hours after administration and was found to be statistically comparable with that of the positive *** phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of steroids,terpenoids, alkaloids,flavonoids,glycosides,carbohydrates,saponins,and acidic compounds in the crude extract and carbohydrates,*** and oil in the weakly acidic *** purification of the weakly acidic fraction of the methanol extract using thin layer chromatography shows that toluene:methanol:diethyl amine(3:1:1) and chloroform:methanol:diethyl amine (9:1:1) are the best solvent system for the isolation of the various components of the weakly acidic fraction of the crude methanol extract of Loranlhus ***:The present study has led to the conclusion that the weakly acidic fraction of the plant under study has the potent antidiabetic activity and that t

Management of Traumatic Joint Dislocations in Irrua

Aim:?To elucidate the pattern of presentation and management of traumatic major joint dislocations as seen in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Method: A five-year retrospective review of 44 cases in 43 patients. Data were retrieved from the Medical Records Department of the hospital. Results:?Forty-four cases of traumatic dislocations were reviewed in 43 patients. Male to female ratio was 7.6:1. Median age was 33 years. The majority of patients were in the 3rd?decade of life. Patients below 40 years accounted for 62.79% of cases. Twenty-four (55.81%) patients had hip dislocation. Knee dislocations were the least, accounting for 2.32% of cases. All cases except three resulted from road traffic accidents (RTAs). None had neurologic deficits. Nineteen (44.23%) patients had isolated injuries. 76.7% cases presented in less than 6 hours. All shoulder dislocations were anterior while all elbow dislocations were posterior. All except 3 cases were managed by closed manipulation under general anaesthesia. Two patients died from associated head injury. Fourteen patients discharged against medical advice while recuperating in the ward. Follow-up was however difficult as a significant number did not turn up. Conclusion: Hip dislocation is the commonest variety of traumatic dislocation in our setting. A majority of cases were amenable to closed manipulation and immobilization. Road traffic accidents accounted for the majority.

The Signatures of Acid Concentration on the Optical Band Gap and Associated Band Tails of Chitosan from Shrimp for Application in Optoelectronic Devices

Over the recent years, the global increase of electronic wastes from electrical and electronic devices (e-wastes) has been on an alarming trend in quantity and toxicity and e-wastes are non-biodegradable resulting in its cumulative increase over time. Changes in technology and unrestricted regional movement of electrical devices have facilitated the generation of more e-wastes leading to high levels of air, soil and water pollution. To address these challenges, biodegradable organic components such as chitosan have been used to replace their inorganic counterparts for optoelectronic device applications. However, in-depth knowledge on how such materials can be used to tune the optical properties of their hybrid semiconductors is unrivaled. Thus, systematic studies of the interplay between the preparation methods and optical band gap and Urbach energy of such organic components are vital. This study has thus been dedicated to map out the effect of acid concentrations during chitosan extraction on the corresponding optical band gap and Urbach energy with a view to improving its applications in optoelectronic devices. The, 1.0 to 2.5 molar hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used for 12 hours at room temperature during demineralization and 2.0 molar sodium hydroxide (NaOH) during deprotonation processes. The absorbance spectrum of the samples was collected by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and band gap energies were analyzed by performing Tauc’s plot. This study revealed that the energy band gap of chitosan extracted from 1 M HCl, 1.5 M HCl, 2.0 M HCl and 2.5 M HCl were 3.72 eV, 3.50 eV, 3.45 eV and 3.36 eV respectively. Furthermore,

Worldwide, lung cancer is the leading cause of mortalitydue to malignancy. The vast majority of cases of lung cancer are smoking related and the most effective way of reducing lung cancer incidence and mortality is by smoking cessation. In the Western world, smoking cessation policies have met with limited success. The other major means of reducing lung cancer deaths is to diagnose cases at an earlier more treatable stage employing screening programmes using chest radiographs or low dose computed tomography. In many countries smoking is still on the increase, and the sheer scale of the problem limits the affordability of such screening programmes. This short review article will evaluate the current evidence and potential areas of research which may benefit policy making across the world.
