Silk-based nerve guidance conduits with macroscopic holes modulate the vascularization of regenerating rat sciatic nerve

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGcs). However, the use of tNGcs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGc would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGcs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGcs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGcs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGcs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGcs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGcs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGcs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. The contribution of chronic peripheral inflammation to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases is an outstanding question. Sustained activation of the peripheral innate and adaptive immune systems occurs in the context of a broad array of disorders ranging from chronic infectious diseases to autoimmune and metabolic diseases. In addition, progressive systemic inflammation is increasingly recognized during aging. Peripheral immune cells could potentially modulate the cellular brain environment via the secretion of soluble molecules. There is an ongoing debate whether peripheral immune cells have the potential to migrate into the brain under certain permissive circumstances. In this perspective, we discuss the possible contribution of chronic peripheral inflammation to the pathogenesis of age-related neurodegenerative diseases with a focus on microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain parenchyma.

Single-model uncertainty quantification in neural network potentials does not consistently outperform model ensembles

Neural networks(NNs)often assign high confidence to their predictions,even for points far out of distribution,making uncertainty quantification(UQ)a *** they are employed to model interatomic potentials in materials systems,this problem leads to unphysical structures that disrupt simulations,or to biased statistics and dynamics that do not reflect the true *** UQ techniques can find new informative data and drive active learning loops for robust ***,a variety of UQ techniques,including newly developed ones,exist for atomistic simulations and there are no clear guidelines for which are most effective or suitable for a given *** this work,we examine multiple UQ schemes for improving the robustness of NN interatomic potentials(NNIPs)through active *** particular,we compare incumbent ensemble-based methods against strategies that use single,deterministic NNs:mean-variance estimation(MVE),deep evidential regression,and Gaussian mixture models(GMM).We explore three datasets ranging from in-domain interpolative learning to more extrapolative out-of-domain generalization challenges:rMD17,ammonia inversion,and bulk silica *** is measured across multiple metrics relating model error to *** experiments show that none of the methods consistently outperformed each other across the various *** remained better at generalization and for NNIP robustness;MVE only proved effective for in-domain interpolation,while GMM was better out-of-domain;and evidential regression,despite its promise,was not the preferable alternative in any of the *** broadly,cost-effective,single deterministic models cannot yet consistently match or outperform ensembling for uncertainty quantification in NNIPs.

For more than six decades, chromic acid anodizing （cAA） has been the central process in the surface pre-treatment of aluminum for adhesively bonded aircraft structures. Unfortunately, this electrolyte contains hexavalent chromium （cr（VI））, a compound known for its toxicity and carcinogenic properties. To comply with the new strict international regulations, the cr（VI）-era will soon have to come to an end. Anodizing aluminum in acid electrolytes produces a self-ordered porous oxide layer. Although different acids can be used to create this type of structure, the excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance that is currently achieved by the complete cr（VI）-based process is not easily matched. This paper provides a critical overview and appraisal of proposed alternatives to cAA, including combinations of multiple anodizing steps, pre- and post anodizing treatments. The work is presented in terms of the modifications to the oxide properties, such as morphological features （e.g., pore size, barrier layer thickness） and surface chemistry, in order to evaluate the link between fundamental principles of adhesion and bond performance.

Oxidation of As(Ⅲ) by potassium permanganate

The oxidation of As（Ⅲ） with potassium permanganate was studied under conditions including pH, initial As（Ⅲ） concentration and dosage of Mn（Ⅶ）. The results have shown that potassium permanganate was an effective agent for oxidation of As（Ⅲ） in a wide pH range. The pH value of tested water was not a significant factor affecting the oxidation of As（Ⅲ） by Mn（Ⅲ）. Although theoretical redox analyses suggest that Mn（Ⅶ） should have better performance in oxidization of As（Ⅲ） within lower pH ranges, the experimental results show that the oxidation efficiencies of As（Ⅲ） under basic and acidic conditions were similar, which may be due to the adsorption of As（Ⅲ） on the Mn（OH）2 and MnO2 resulting from the oxidation of As（Ⅲ）.

Long-term deterioration of lubricant-infused nanoporous anodic aluminium oxide surface immersed in Nacl solution

This study investigated the deterioration of a lubricant-infused anodic aluminium oxide surface in a 1M Nacl solution for~200 *** observation by cryo-SEM and quantitative analyses by UV spectroscopy and EIS revealed that the long-term deterioration of the lubricant-infused surface was divided into two stages:the surface-adhered lubricant layer gradually dissolved at a constant rate until the substrate was exposed;afterwards the lubricant infused in the nanochannels began to diffuse and was depleted after~200 *** EIS results also revealed that the defects reduced the corrosion resistance of the lubricant-infused surface considerably.

The induced path number p（G） of a graph G is defined as the minimum number of subsets into which the vertex set of G can be partitioned so that each subset induces a path. Broere et hi. proved that if G is a graph of order n, then 〈 p（G）＋ p（G）〈3n/2] . In this paper,_we characterize [3n/2], improve the lower bound on p（G）＋ p（G） by one when the graphs G for which p（G） -4- p（G） = 3n n is the square of an odd integer, and determine a best possible upper bound for p（G）＋ p（G） when neither G nor G has isolated vertices.
