An elliptical blade is not a true ellipse,but a superellipse–Evidence from two michelia species

The shape of leaf laminae exhibits considerable diversity and complexity that reflects adaptations to environmental factors such as ambient light and precipitation as well as phyletic legacy.many leaves appear to be elliptical which may represent a‘default’developmental condition.However,whether their geometry truly conforms to the ellipse equation(EE),i.e.,(x/a)^(2)+(y/b)^(2)=1,remains conjectural.One alternative is described by the superellipse equation(SE),a generalized version of EE,i.e.,|x/a|^(n)+|y/b|^(n)=1.To test the efficacy of EE versus SE to describe leaf geometry,the leaf shapes of two michelia species(i.e.,m.cavaleriei var.platypetala,and m.maudiae),were investigated using 60 leaves from each species.Analysis shows that the majority of leaves(118 out of 120)had adjusted root-mean-square errors ofmetry,i.e.,the mean absolute deviation from the polar point to leaf marginal points was smaller than 5%of the radius of a hypothesized circle with its area equaling leaf area.The estimates of n for the two species werempled leaves conformed to SE and not to EE.This study confirms the existence of SE in leaves,linking this to its potential functional advantages,particularly the possible influence of leaf shape on hydraulic conductance.

Plant long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs)have emerged as important regulators of chromatin dynamics,impacting on transcriptional programs leading to different developmental outputs.The lncRNA AUXIN-REGULATED PROmOTER loOP(APOlo)directly recognizes multiple independent loci across the Arabidopsis genome and modulates their three-dimensional chromatin conformation,leading to transcriptional shifts.Here,we show that APOlo recognizes the locus encoding the root hair(RH)master regulator ROOT HAIR DEFECTIVE 6(RHD6)and controls RHD6 transcriptional activity,leading to cold-enhanced RH elongation through the consequent activation of the transcription factor gene RHD6-like RSL4.Furthermore,we demonstrate that APOlo interacts with the transcription factor WRKY42 and modulates its binding to the RHD6 promoter.WRKY42 is required for the activation of RHD6 by low temperatures and WRKY42 deregulation impairs cold-induced RH expansion.Collectively,our results indicate that a novel ribonucleoprotein complex with APOlo and WRKY42 forms a regulatory hub to activate RHD6 by shaping its epigenetic environment and integrate signals governing RH growth and development.

Liver expression of steroid hormones and Apolipoprotein D receptors in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIm: To evaluate the tissular expression of Androgen (A), Estrogen (E) and Progesterone (Pg) receptors, and Apolipoprotein D (ApoD), in liver tumors from resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases in order to assess their possible relationship to prognosis. mETHODS: We performed an immunohistochemical study using tissue microarrays (containing more than 260 cancer specimens, from 31 HCC patients and controls) to determine the presence of specif ic antibodies against AR, ER, PgR and ApoD, correlating their findings with several clinico-pathological and biological variables. The staining results were categorized using a semi-quantitive score based on their intensity, and the percentage of immunostained cells was measured. RESULTS: A total of 21 liver tumors (67.7%) were positive for AR; 16 (51.6%) for ER; 26 (83.9%) for PgR and 12 (38.7%) stained for ApoD. We have found a wide variability in the immunostaining score values for each protein, with a median (range) of 11.5 (11.5-229.5) for AR; 11.1 (8.5-65) for ER; 14.2 (4-61) for PgR; and 37.7 (13.8-81.1) for ApoD. A history of heavy ethanol consumption, correlated positively with AR and PgR and negatively with ER status. HCV chronic infection also correlated positively with AR and PgR status. However, the presence of ApoD immunostaining did not correlate with any of these variables. Tumors with a positive immuno-staining for PgR showed a better prognosis. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate a moderate clinical value of the steroid receptor status in HCC, emphasizing the need to perform further studies in order to evaluate the possible role of new hormonal-based therapies.

The realization of a mixed-phase microstructure in strained BiFeO_(3)(BFO)thin films has led to numerous novel effects derived from the coexistence of the tetragonal-like monoclinic phase(T phase)and rhombohedral-like monoclinic phase(R phase).Strong strain and polarization diiferences between the phases should result in a high level of transformation plasticity,which enables the continuous alteration of the relative proportion of R and T states in response to external forces.Although the potential for utilizing such plasticity to control mixed-phase populations under external stimuli is evident,direct experi・mental evidence backed by equilibrium predictions has not yet been fully demonstrated.Here we demonstrate deterministic control of mixed-phase populations in an epitaxially strained BFO thin film through the application of localized stresses and electric fields in a reversible manne匚The results illustrate and rationalize deterministic control of mixed phases in strained BFO films,which could be crucial in tuning their functional properties.The findings also highlight a new multiparametric technique in the scanning probe lithography toolbox based on tip-assisted electric and strain field manipulation of functional properties that might find application beyond the ferroelectric domain and structural phase lithography.

A stepwise process for carbon dioxide sequestration using magnesium silicates

This work involves the production of magnesium in the form of mg(OH)_(2)from serpentinite rock(nickel mine tailing)material followed by conversion into mgCO_(3)using a pressurised fluidised bed(PFB)reactor operating at 400℃-600℃and pressures up to 2.85 mPa.Our approach is rooted in the thermodynamic fact that the reaction between mg(OH)_(2)and gaseous CO_(2)forming mgCO_(3)and water releases significant amounts of heat.The main problem is,however,the chemical kinetics;the reaction is slow and has to be accelerated in order to be used in an economically viable process for large-scale(~1 mt/a)CO_(2)sequestration.We have constructed a labscale PFB reactor test-setup for optimising the carbonation reaction.At high enough temperatures and conversion levels the reaction should provide the heat for the proceeding mg(OH)_(2)production step,making the overall process energy neutral.So far we have been able to achieve a conversion degree of 26%at 500℃and 2.85 mPa after 30 min(particle size 125-212μm).In this paper the test facility and our latest results and progress on CO_(2)mineral carbonation are summarised.Also,the possible integration of the iron as a feedstock for iron and steel production will be briefly addressed.An interesting side-effect of this carbon dioxide capture and storage(CCS)route is that significant amounts of iron are obtained from the serpentinite rock material.This is released during the mg(OH)_(2)production and can be of great interest to the iron-and steel producing sector,which at the same time is Finland’s largest CO_(2)producer.

Controlling the spatial distribution of functional groups on two-dimensional(2D)materials on a micrometer scale and below represents a fascinating opportunity to achieve anisotropic(opto)electronic properties of these materials.Periodic patterns of covalent functionalization can lead to pericxJic potentials in the monolayer;however,creating such superstructures is very challenging.Here,we describe an original approach to the periodic functionalization of graphene induced by substrate patterning using a pulsed laser.Laser-induced periodic surface structures(LIPSS)are produced on silicon wafers with thermally-grown oxide layers.The irradiation conditions for the formation of UPSS confined at the SiO2/Si interface have been unravelled.LIPSS imprint their periodicity to the reactivity of the monolayer graphene placed on the substrate via modulation of its local doping level.This method is clean,straightforward and scalable with high spatial resolution.
