Forecasting of Asian dust storm that occurred on May 10-13, 2011, using an ensemble-based data assimilation system

An ensemble-based assimilation system that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOT） data. processed in the jAXA （japan Aerospace Exploration Agency） Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （jASMES） system with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May 10-13. 2011. The modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employed in jASMES enable AOT retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making jASMES effective for dust forecasting and early warning by enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and japan in the TEMM WG1 dataset. Only the forecast with assimilation successfully captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by increasing the AOT around the core by 70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by 20-30% in the 18-h forecast. The forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Mitigation of floor heave in West Kentucky Coal Mine

A West Kentucky mine operation in No. 11 seam encountered floor heave, due to the localized increase in the thickness of the fireclay mine floor. Floor heave has overridden seals installed in two mined out panels. The third seal's location was planned for isolating that area from the Mains. A plan of support has been developed to prevent repetition of the floor heave and related problems outby the seals. The applied ground control measures were successful. An attempt of a 3D numerical modeling was made; thus, it would match the observed behavior of the mine floor and could be used as a design tool in similar conditions. The paper describes sequence of events, an applied mitigation ground control system, and the first stage of numerical modeling.

Three Tier Fog Networks: Enabling IoT/5G for Latency Sensitive Applications

Following the progression in Internet of Things(IoT) and 5G communication networks, the traditional cloud computing model have shifted to fog computing. Fog computing provides mobile computing, network control and storage to the network edges to assist latency critical and computation-intensive applications. Moreover, security features are improved in fog paradigm by processing critical data on edge devices instead of data centres outside the control plane of users. However, fog network deployment imposes many challenges including resource allocation, privacy of users, non-availability of programming model and testing software and support for the heterogenous networks. This article highlights these challenges and their potential solutions in detail. This article also discusses threetier fog network architecture, its standardization and benefits in detail. The proposed resource allocation mechanism for three tier fog networks based on swap matching is described. Results show that by practicing the proposed resource allocation mechanism, maximum throughput with reduced latency is achieved.

Providing healthcare services on-the-fly using multi-player cooperation game theory in Internet of Vehicles(IoV) environment

Internet of Vehicles(IoV) is a leading technology of the present era. It has gained huge attention with respect to its implementation in wide variety of domains ranging from traffic safety to infotainment applications. However, Io V can also be extended to healthcare domain, where the patients can be provided healthcare services on-the-fly. We extend this novel concept in this paper and refer it as“Healthcare services on-the-fly”. The concept of game theory has been used among the vehicles to access the healthcare services while traveling. The vehicles act as players in the game and tend to form and split coalitions to access these services. Learning automata(LA) act as the players for interaction with the environment and take appropriate actions based on reward and penalty. Apart from this, Virtual Machine(VM) scheduling algorithm for efficient utilization of resources at cloud level has also been formulated. A stochastic reward net(SRN)-based model is used to represent the coalition formation and splitting with respect to availability of resources at cloud level. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using various performance evaluation metrics. The results obtained prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in comparison to the best, first, and random fit schemes.

A primer on the use of probability generating functions in infectious disease modeling

The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of serum vitamin D levels on semen quality and testosterone *** is a crosssectional study conducted at Androscience,Science and Innovation Center in Andrology and High-Complex Clinical and Andrology Laboratory in Sao Paulo,Brazil,with 508 male patients,aged 18-60 years,from 2007 to *** parameters and serum sexual hormones were correlated with serum vitamin D concentrations in 260 men selected by strict selection *** were divided into normozoospermic group(NZG,n=124)and a group with seminal abnormalities(SAG,n=136).Evaluation included complete physical examination,past medical history,habits and lifestyle factors,two complete seminal analysis with sperm functional tests,serum levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D_(3)(25(OH)VD_(3)),total and free testosterone,luteinizing hormone(LH),follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG),total cholesterol,homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)index,and *** mean concentration of 25(OH)VD_(3)was significantly lower in the SAG(P<0.001)and positively correlated with all baseline seminal parameters and total testosterone *** addition,serum vitamin D_(3)concentration was found to be positively correlated with sperm concentration(β=2.103;P<0.001),total number of spermatozoa with progressive motility(β=2.069;P=0.003),total number of motile spermatozoa(β=2.571;P=0.015),and strict morphology(β=0.056;P=0.006),regardless of other *** is the first comparative study to address the issue of serum vitamin D_(3)content between normozoospermic patients and those with sperm *** clearly demonstrates a direct and positive relationship between serum vitamin D level and overall semen quality,male reproductive potential,and testosterone levels.
