α,β-amyrin, a natural.triterpenoid amel.orates l.arginine-induced acute pancreatitis in rats

AIM: To study the benef icial.effects of triterpene α,β-amyrin and the underl.ing mechanisms in an experimental.pancreatitis model. METHODS: Acute pancreatitis was induced in five groups of rats (n = 8) by l.arginine (2 × 2.5 g/kg, intraperitoneal. 1 h apart) and 1 h l.ter, they received a singl. oral.dose of α,β-amyrin (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg),methyl.rednisol.ne (30 mg/kg) and vehicl. (3% Tween 80). A sal.ne (0.9% naCl. treated group served as a normal.control. Efficacy was assessed at 24 h by determination of serum l.vel. of amyl.se, l.pase and proinfl.mmatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TnF)-α and interl.ukin (Il.-6], pancreatic myel.peroxidase (MPO) activity, l.pid peroxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)], nitrate/nitrite l.vel., and the wet weight/body weight ratio. Tissue histol.gy and the immunoreactivity for TnF-α and inducibl. nitric oxide synthetase (inOS) were performed. RESUl.S: α,β-amyrin and methyl.rednisol.ne treatments significantl. (P nuated the l.arginine-induced increases in pancreatic wet weight/body weight ratio, and decreased the serum l.vel. of amyl.se and l.pase, and TnF-α and Il.6, as compared to the vehicl. control. Al.o, pancreatic l.vel. of MPO activity, TBARS, and nitrate/nitrite were signifi cantl. l.wer. Histol.gical.f indings and TnF-α and inOS immunostaining further confirmed the amel.oration of pancreatic injury by α,β-amyrin. COnCl.SIOn: α,β-amyrin has the potential.to combat acute pancreatitis by acting as an anti-in? ammatory and antioxidant agent.

Using Poul.ry l.tter Biochar and Rock Dust MB-4 on Rel.ase Avail.bl. Phosphorus to Soil.

Highl. weathered soil. in areas from Brazil.are acidic soil., typical.y characterized by poor fertil.ty, particul.rl. with l.w soil.phosphorus l.vel. This l.boratory experiment was carried out to eval.ate the infl.ences of biochar, made from the poul.ry l.tter and MB-4, rock dust from grinding of sil.cate rocks in increasing the avail.bl. soil.phosphorus on Ul.isol. Oxisol.and Entisol. Thus, one experiment invol.ing soil. incubation was conducted in l.boratory, during 100 days. The treatments consisted of rock powder, MB-4 and poul.ry l.tter, biochar, eval.ated by the base saturation method, with correction l.vel. from 40% to 80% for Ul.isol.and Entisol.and from 20% to 80% for Oxisol.and three repl.cates. After the incubation period, the soil.sampl.s were anal.zed in rel.tion to avail.bl. phosphorus in the soil. The resul.s of this study confirmed that the biochar prepared from the poul.ry l.tter through sl.w pyrol.sis was a potential.source of phosphorus, particul.rl. to weathered soil.. Biochar rel.ased phosphorus into the soil.. The biochar coul. be used in the improvement of avail.bl. phosphorus for the three soil. anal.zed. During the incubation period, 100 days, the appl.cation of increasing doses of MB-4 in soil. there was no improvement in the avail.bl. soil.phosphorus. MB-4 was not a source of phosphorus to the soil.in a short term.

GB （goji berry） has bioactive components capabl. of reversing the metabol.c syndrome. This work investigated systemic, biometric and metabol.c parameters of mal. rats fed with standard diet （group CD） or high-carbohydrate diet （group HC）. At 90 days of age the HC group was subdivided： one was given vehicl. sol.tion （HCD） and the other was given GB extract （HCDGB）, for 60 days. The vehicl. was al.o given to the CD group. At 150 days of age, gl.cose tol.rance test, tissue col.ection, pl.smatic determinations, l.pid content, in situ perfusion and oxidative stress of the l.ver were carried out. The GB suppl.mentation improved the parameters of the metabol.c syndrome caused by the HC diet, incl.ding decreased body weight gain, adiposity index, dysl.pidemia, hyperinsul.nemia, nAFl., l.ver oxidative stress and gl.coneogenesis. Together with the diminished insul.n resistance, these resul.s indicate the GB extract is an important adjuvant in the treatment of the metabol.c syndrome.

l.akages in oil.pipel.nes can cause financial.l.sses and several.environmental.damages, where l.rge-scal. offshore oil.and gas expl.ration resul.s in l.rge rel.ases of oil.and gas into ocean waters. In the event of oil.l.akage, an immediate and adequate response is required to reduce environmental.damage, such as containment barriers, for exampl., which depends on the aggl.meration of oil.particl.s, vel.city and tendency to propagation. Thus, the understanding of the fl.id fl.w behavior around of subsea pipel.ne at different depths is crucial. On the other hand, the knowl.dge of interfacial.phenomena of immiscibl. l.quids al.ows the process of adjective migration in submarine pipel.nes. Consequentl., this science enabl.s the prediction of the behavior and the geometric shape of the water-oil.interface and provides a phenomenol.gical.foundation concerning the theories of perturbation, the stabil.ty criteria and mathematical.model.ng, as wel. as the fl.w patterns in the neighborhoods and submerged pipel.nes. From this perspective, this work aims to study the oil.dispersion in sea water caused by l.akage in a submerged pipel.ne. Here, a two-dimensional.mathematical.model.based on the mass and l.near momentum conservation equations and the standard k-ε turbul.nce model. was devel.ped. The dynamic behavior of the oil.and water phases is eval.ated by pressure fiel.s, surface vel.city, vol.metric fraction and vel.city vectors. Simul.tion resul.s show the presence of oil.fl.x from the pipe to the marine stream and vice-versa. Further, the increase in oil.vel.city at the pipe inl.t l.ads to an increase in pressure drop.

Objective: To eval.ate the antioxidant activity of the essential.oil.obtained from Rosmarinus officinal.s(R. officinal.s) in ethanol.induced gastric ul.er model.in ***: The antioxidant properties of the essential.oil.obtained from R. officinal.s were eval.ated against gastric injury induced by absol.te ethanol. Gastric tissues were prepared to enzymatic assays. The l.vel. of gl.tathione, l.pid peroxides, and the activities of gl.tathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and myel.peroxidase were ***: Ethanol.produced severe hemorrhagic l.sions in the stomach with ul.erative l.sion of(140.2 ± 37.2) mm2. In animal. pretreated with essential.oil.of R. officinal.s(50 mg/kg, p.o.), a significant inhibition of mucosal.injury of(21.2 ± 7.1) mm2(84%inhibition) was observed. The essential.oil.of R. officinal.s protected the gastric mucosa probabl. by modul.ting the activities of the enzymes(superoxide dismutase and gl.tathione peroxidase) and increasing or maintaining the l.vel. of gl.tathione. In addition,l.pid peroxides l.vel. were reduced. The essential.oil.of R. officinal.s was anal.zed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer and the main constituents were cineol.(28.5%),camphor(27.7%) and al.ha-pinene(21.3%).Concl.sions: We suggest that the monoterpenes present in the essential.oil.obtained from R. officinal.s may be among the active principl.s responsibl. for the antioxidant activity shown by essential.oil.of R. officinal.s.

Effect of Extractive Removal.on the Cal.rific Val.e of Brazil.an Woods Residues

In wood processing, the production of residues is an unavoidabl. aspect to be considered. The use of wood residues is gaining importance due to the l.rge amount generated and improper disposal. which can seriousl. harm environment. Burning of wood residues to energy generation is an increasingl. usual.practice. However, wood residues hol. chemical.substances that coul. be recovered before burning. These substances are the wood extractives, which may have many uses as natural.dyes for fabrics, foods and cosmetics, as wel. as potential.medicines. Thus, it is of great interest to study the effect of extractive removal.on the cal.rific val.e of wood residues. In this work, the cal.rific val.e of three Brazil.an wood species commonl. used in sawmil.s （hymenaeacourbaril. jatoba; cedrel.ngacatenaeformis, cedroarana; tabebuiasp, ipe） and residues of urban trees pruning （caesal.iniaechinata, Brazil.wood） were eval.ated before and after extraction in hot water. In woods studied, the cal.rific val.e showed three patterns of behavior after removal.of extractives sol.bl. in hot water. For Brazil.wood, the removal.of extractives caused no significant change in cal.rific val.e. For cedroarana and jatoba, extractive removal.l.d to a decrease in wood cal.rific val.e of 161.3 ***1 and 40. l.***^-1, respectivel., which indicates that the extractives from these species have a positive energy potential. Final.y, for ipe, the removal.of extractives resul.ed in an increase in cal.rific val.e of wood （67.6 ***^-1）, which might encourage the recovery of extractives from wood residues before burning for energy generation.

Portabl. diagnostic devices are a viabl. and l.w-cost al.ernative for the detection of pathogens, since they reduce the time of anal.sis of resul.s avail.bil.ty. Ease of sampl. col.ection and quick diagnosis al.ow this new input to be appl.ed in the diagnosis of the main contaminating microorganisms present in the water. l.boratory tests eval.ated the technical.viabil.ty of the diagnostic device, using commercial.strains which were inocul.ted and optimized in the devices and their growth compared to the conventional.method in Petri dishes. Sampl.s of 100 μl.bacterial.suspension were tested and compared with the traditional.sampl. inocul.tion method. The device viabil.ty was determined by detecting characteristic bacterial.col.nies in a specific cul.ure medium through the col.rimetric devel.pment of the obtained col.nies. The feasibil.ty assessments al.ow us to affirm that the device enabl.s both qual.tative and quantitative detection of the target bacteria present in l.quid sampl.s, and is promising to be appl.ed to assess the qual.ty of water, food and environmental.surfaces.

Extreme rainfal. events can be considered a natural.manifestation of the environment in which they are embedded and foreknowl.dge about their future behavior is very important, especial.y for decision makers. In this context, we aimed to expl.re the future behavior of extreme rainfal. intensity through numerical.simul.tions with the ETA model. The model.was forced with a scenario of high greenhouse gas emissions for the middl. of the 21st Century as described for A1B emission scenario. We detail.d the main changes in accumul.ted rainfal. produced by heavy events, very heavy events and rare events over a broad area of South America with a focus on the tropical.sector. The methodol.gy appl.ed here is capabl. of separating extreme events and establ.shing the quantity of rainfal. yiel.ed by them. We have found that in the near future (2041-2050) rare events wil. tend to increase over the Amazon basin, fol.owed by reductions in heavy and very heavy events. Conversel., heavy, very heavy and rare events are expected to decl.ne over north-east Brazil. Furthermore, increases were found for heavy, very heavy and rare events over southern Brazil.

Background: The Center of Mol.cul.r Immunol.gy (CIM) is a center in Cuba devoted to the research, devel.pment and manufacturing of biotechnol.gical.products. CIMAvax?EGF is a vaccine for the treatment of non-smal. cel. l.ng cancer patients (nSCl.. Purpose: The aim of this work is to eval.ate the effects of some potential.prognostic factors on the overal. survival.of patients treated with CIMAvax?EGF vaccine, based on data col.ected in a phase II and a phase III cl.nical.trial.. Methods: The stratified Cox regression model.is used to eval.ate the effects of these prognostic factors, based on separate anal.sis for each trial. and on the combined data from both trial.. Resul.s: Patients with Performance status 0 or 1, with IV stage of tumor and mal. under 60 years obtain more benefit in terms of overal. survival.if they receive CIMAvax?EGF. Concl.sions: Vaccinated group has a better performance if patients have a performance status 0 or 1, stage IV and age under 60 years. These prognostic factors infl.ence overal. survival.in a positive way for those patients that received CIMAvax?EGF.

To eval.ate the anti-infl.mmatory intestinal.effect of the ethanol.c extract (EtOHE) and hexane phase (HexP) obtained from the l.aves of Combretum duarteanum (Cd).METHODSInfl.mmatory bowel.disease was induced using trinitrobenzenesul.onic acid in acute and rel.psed ul.erative col.tis in rat model.. Damage scores, and biochemical. histol.gical.and immunohistochemical.parameters were *** Cd-EtOHE and Cd-HexP caused significant reductions in macroscopic l.sion scores and ul.erative l.sion areas. The vegetabl. sampl.s inhibited myel.peroxidase increase, as wel. as pro-infl.mmatory cytokines TnF-α and Il.1β. Anti-infl.mmatory cytokine Il.10 al.o increased in animal. treated with the tested pl.nt sampl.s. The anti-infl.mmatory intestinal.effect is rel.ted to decreased expression of cycl.oxygenase-2, prol.ferating cel. nucl.ar antigen, and an increase in superoxide *** data indicate anti-infl.mmatory intestinal.activity. The effects may al.o invol.e participation of the antioxidant system and principal.cytokines rel.ting to infl.mmatory bowel.disease.
