Use of radiation in strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae:A new technique for industrial applications

During the industrial fermentation process in the production of fuel ethanol, yeasts are subject to several stressing conditions. The survival and the permanence of strains introduced in the process correlate with the capability of these yeasts in resisting to physical and chemical stresses, as well as their recovering ability to compete with contaminating micro-organisms commonly present in this industrial process. We aim at the selection of Saccharomyces cere visiae strains having this capability and ability. In this sense, cultivations of strains with industrial interest were irradiated with gammas ray at a wide dose interval. Growing curves for the strains were analyzed by means of their relative growth, a new concept here introduced, which allows a better understanding of the growing and recovering processes following radiative stress. It was found that gamma radiation could be used as an alternative method to quantify growing capabilities of S. cerevisiae strains under stressing conditions. It was also shown that this radiological method could be utilized as an additional procedure to select best robust industrial strains. This radiological method simplifies traditional analysis of strain viability, by avoiding the great number of necessary and consecutive fermentation assays.

Supercapacitors(Scs) are high-power energy storage devices with ultra-fast charge/discharge *** using concentrated aqueous-based electrolytes can work at low temperatures due to their intrinsic properties, such as higher freezing point depression(fPD) and robustness. Besides the traditional organic-and aqueous-based(salt-in-water) electrolytes used in Scs, water-in-salt(WISE) sodium perchlorate electrolytes offer high fPD, non-flammability, and low-toxicity conditions, allowing the fabrication of safer, environmentally friendly, and more robust devices. for the first time, this work reports a comprehensive study regarding WISE system’s charge-storage capabilities and physicochemical properties under low-temperature conditions(T carbon-based electrodes. The effect of temperature reduction on the electrolyte viscosity and electrical properties was investigated using different techniques and the in-situ(or operando) Raman spectroscopy under dynamic polarization *** cell voltage, equivalent series resistance, and specific capacitance were investigated as a function of the temperature. The cell voltage(U) increased ~ 50%, while the specific capacitance decreased ~20%when the temperature was reduced from 25 ℃ to -10 ℃. As a result, the maximum specific energy(E = cU^(2)/2) increased ~ 100%. Therefore, low-temperature WISEs are promising candidates to improve the energy-storage characteristics in Scs.

Productive Performance of Wheat Based on Nitrogen fertilization in coverage

The objective of this work was to evaluate genotypes of wheat depending on doses of N in order to determine the best value of N and the components of productivity of wheat. Experiment was carried out in Pato Branco—PR in soil classified as Eutrophic typical RED LATOSOL. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in 3 × 5 (× N doses genotypes), with three repetitions. The genotypes were: cD 108, cD 115 and BRS 220, and the doses of n were: zero;20;40;80 and 120 kg of N·ha-1, applied at the beginning of tillering. After harvest assessed number of Spike (NE), Tang (Ec) length, grains per Spike (GE), mass of thousand grains (MMG), grain yield (R) and weight/HL (PH), application of N increased the NE and R, and however decreased to MMG. The genotypes differed among themselves, featuring better performance of the NE (the BRS 220), cE (the cD 115) and R (the cD 108). There were positive correlations between the doses of N with the NE and R and be-tween NE with the R, and negative correlation between doses of N with the MMG. It is concluded that the NE is the main factor that affects the R with N supply.

Surface Modification on Ti-30Ta Alloy for Biomedical Application

Titanium and titanium alloys are currently being used for clinical biomedical applications due to their high strength, corrosion resistance and elastic modulus. The Ti-30Ta alloy has gotten extensive application as the important biomedical materials. The substrate surface of the Ti-30Ta alloy was altered either by chemical or topographical surface modification. The biocompatibility of an implant is closely related to its surface properties. Thus surface modification is one of effective methods for improving the biocompatibility of implants. The development status of biomedical materials has been summarized firstly, the biomedical application. In this study Ti-30Ta alloy surface was investigate as-casting (Group 1) modified with alkaline and heat-treatments in NaOH with 1.5M at 60°c for 24 hrs (Group 2), alkaline and heat-treatments with SBf-coatings by immersion in NaOH and SBfX5 for 24hrs (Group 3), anodization process was performed in an electrolyte solution containing Hf (48%) and H2SO4 (98%) with the addition of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) 35V for 40 min (Group 4) and ion beam etching with 1200 eV ions with a beam current of 200 mA for a 3 hrs etch (Group 5). SEM was used to investigate the topography, EDS the chemical composition, and surface energy was evaluate with water contact angle measurement. SEM results show different structure on the surface for each group. EDS spectra identified similarity on Group 1, 4 and 5. The results indicate for group 2 an amorphous sodium tantalate hydrogel layer on the substrate surface and for group 3 the apatite nucleation on substrate surface. The Group 4 shows unorganized and vertically nanotubes and Group 5 shows a little alteration in the topography on the substrate surfaces. Overall the contact angle shows Group 5 the most hydrophobic and Group 4 the most hydrophilic. The study indicates Group 3 and 4 with potential for biomedical application. Systemic mastocytosis: A rare cause of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension

Mastocytosis is a clonal neoplastic disorder of the mast cells(Mc) that can be limited to the skin(cutaneous mastocytosis) or involve one or more extracutaneous organs(systemic mastocytosis). The clinical manifestations of mastocytosis are heterogeneous ranging from indolent disease with a long-term survival to a highly aggressive neoplasm with survival of about 6 mo. Although liver involvement in aggressive systemic mastocytosis(ASM) is relatively common, the development of portal hypertension with or without cirrhosis is rare. We report a case of ASM without skin involvement in a 72-year-old caucasian male who presented with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension based on clinical, analytical, imagiological and endoscopic findings. Given the hematological picture, the correct diagnosis was established based on ancillary tests for Mc using bone marrow aspirates and biopsy. Extensive involvement of the liver and gastrointestinal tract was histologically documented. The disease progressed rapidly and severe pancytopenia and recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding became the dominant problem. This case illustrates the challenge in establishing a diagnosis of ASM especially when the clinical picture is atypical and without skin involvement. Gastroenterologists should consider infiltrative disease, particularly systemic mastocytosis, as a differential diagnosis in a clinical case of portal hypertension of unknown etiology.

cYP1A1,cYP2E1 and EPHX1 polymorphisms in sporadic colorectal neoplasms

AIM To investigate the contribution of polymorphisms in the cYP1A1, cYP2E1 and EPHX1 genes on sporadic colorectal cancer(ScRc) risk. METHODS Six hundred forty-one individuals(227 patients with ScRc and 400 controls) were enrolled in the study. The variables analyzed were age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and clinical and histopathological tumor parameters. The cYP1A1 *2A, cYP1A1 *2c cYP2E1 *5B and cYP2E1 *6 polymorphisms were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PcR-RfLP). The EPHX1 Tyr113 His, EPHX1 His139 Arg and cYP1A1 *2c polymorphisms were detected by real-time PcR. chisquared test and binary logistic regression were used in the statistical analysis. Background: Atherosclerosis and thrombosis are the major manifestations underlying cardiovascular diseases (cVD), which are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Both result from an interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors. The goal of our study was to evaluate several polymorphisms identified as predisposing factors to atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Material and Methods: A series of 155 healthy unrelated individuals of Azorean origin were analyzed using the cVD StripAssay (ViennaLab Diagnostics, Austria) for the most established polymorphisms involved in blood coagulation (f2, f5, f13A1, fGB), fibrinolitic system (SERPINE1), platelet adhesion (ITGB3), homocysteine metabolism (MTHfR), reninangio-tensin system (AcE) and lipid metabolism (APOE). Results: No significant differences were observed in allelic frequencies when comparing our data to mainland Portugal. Group stratification according to the number of “increased” risk alleles, demonstrated that 116/155 (75%) individuals belong to the moderate risk group (5 - 10 risk alleles). conclusions: Although acknowledging the fact that the allelic states at the analysed loci lack predictive value, the fact that a high frequency of individuals presents at least 5 risk alleles (124/155;80%) is important for the establishment of the appropriate preventive measures in the Azorean population.

There has been a growing interest in disordered optical media in recent years due to their potential applications in solar collectors, random lasers, light confinement, and other advanced photonic functions. This paper studies the transport of light for different incidence angles in a strongly disordered optical medium composed of core-shell TiO_2@Silica nanoparticles suspended in an ethanol solution. A decrease of optical conductance and an increase of absorption near the input border are reported when the incidence angle increases. The specular reflection, measured for the photons that enter the sample, is lower than the effective internal reflection undergone by the coherently backscattered photons in the exact opposite direction, indicating a nonreciprocal propagation of *** study represents a novel approach in order to understand the complex physics involved at the phase transition to localization.

Background To control the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis grandis(coleoptera:curculionidae),a key pest of cotton in the Americas,insecticides have been intensively used to manage their populations,increasing selection pressure for resistant ***,this study aimed to detect insecticide resistance and assess insecticide control failure likelihood of boll weevil populations exposed to malathion,profenophos+cypermethrin,and fipronil *** Twelve populations of the boll weevil were collected from commercial cotton fileds of the state of Bahia,northeastern *** populations were exposed to malathion,profenophos+cypermethrin mixture,and fipronil,at their respective maximum label dose for field *** replicates of 10 adult beetles were exposed to the insecticides and mortality was recorded after 24 h *** control failure likelihood was determined after 48 *** median lethal times(LT_(50))were observed for malathion and the profenophos+cypermethrin *** to at least one insecticide was detected in 11 populations;three populations were resistant to malathion and profenophos+cypermethrin;seven were resistant to all insecticides *** resistance levels were low(fold)for the three *** 12 populations tested,58%of them exhibited significant risk of control failure for the insecticides malathion and profenophos+*** insecticide fipronil was efficient for the control of the boll weevil in 83%of the *** The results confirm the significant risk of insecticide control failure in the boll weevil populations to the main compounds used in the ***,proper insecticide resistance management plans are necessary for the boll weevil in the region,particularly for malathion and profenophos+cypermethrin insecticides.
