Landscape effects on the thermotolerance of carabid beetles and the role of behavioral thermoregulation

Physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation are central to seasonal cold adaptation in ectothermic *** species with enhanced mobility,behavioral responses may be of greater importance in the cold stress *** the carabid beetles as a study organism,the current study compared physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation in carabid species inhabiting cereal fields in different landscape contexts,from fine grain heterogeneous“complex”landscapes to homogenous“simple”*** thermotolerance was determined via measurement of the CTmin and chill coma *** responses to cold temperature exposure were determined employing a purpose built arena,and thoracic temperature measured to estimate the efficacy of the behavior as a form of behavioral *** revealed an influence of landscape composition on the cold tolerance of carabid beetles,although species differed in their sensitivity to landscape intensification.A reduced effect of landscape on the thermotolerance of larger carabid beetles was observed,thought to be the consequence of greater mobility preventing local acclimation to microclimatic variation along the landscape intensification *** into behavioral thermoregulation of the 3 largest species revealed burrowing behavior to be the main behavioral response to cold stress,acting to significantly raise carabid body *** finding highlights the importance of behavioral thermoregulation as a strategy to evade cold *** use of behavioral thermoregulation may negate the need to invest in physiological thermotolerance,further offering explanation for the lack of landscape effect on the physiological thermotolerance of larger carabids.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and generational heterogeneity on ecommerce shopping styles-A case study of Sacramento,California

The COVID pandemic has accelerated the growth of ecommerce and reshaped shopping patterns,which in turn impacts trip-making and vehicle miles *** objectives of this study are to define shopping styles and quantify their prevalence in the population,investigate the impact of the pandemic on shopping style transition,understand the generational heterogeneity and other factors that influence shopping styles,and comment on the potential impact of the pandemic on long-term shopping *** months after the initial shutdown(may/June 2021),we collected ecommerce behavioral data from 313 Sacramento Region households using an online survey.A K-means clustering analysis of shopping behavior across eight commodity types identified five shopping styles,including ecommerce independent,ecommerce dependent,and three mixed modes *** found that the share of ecommerce independent style shifted from 55%pre-pandemic to 27%during the ***,30%kept the same style as pre-pandemic,54%became more ecommerce dependent,and 16%became less ecommerce dependent,with the latter group more likely to view shopping an excuse to get *** was found across ***-pandemic,millennials and Gen Z were the most ecommerce dependent,but during the pandemic they made relatively small shifts toward increased ecommerce *** Boomers and the Silent Generation were bimodal,either sticking to in-person shopping or shifting to ecommercedependency during the ***-pandemic intentions varied across styles,with households who primarily adopt non-food ecommerce intending to reverse back to in-person shopping,while the highly ecommerce dependent intend to limit future in-store activities.

Diffusion-free valve for preprogrammed immunoassay with capillary microfluidics

By manipulating the geometry and surface chemistry of microfluidic channels,capillary-driven microfluidics can move and stop fluids spontaneously without external ***,complex microfluidic circuits can be preprogrammed by synchronizing the capillary pressures and encoding the surface tensions of microfluidic chips.A key component of these systems is the capillary ***,the main concern for these valves is the presence of unwanted diffusion during the valve loading and activation steps that can cause *** this study,we design and validate a novel diffusion-free capillary valve:theπ-*** valve consists of a 3D structure and a void *** void acts as a spacer between two fluids to avoid direct *** the valve is triggered,the air trapped within the void is displaced by pneumatic suction induced from the capillary flow downstream without introducing a gas bubble into the *** proposed design eliminates diffusive mixing before valve *** simulation is used to study the function and optimize the dimensions of theπ-valve,and 3D printing is used to fabricate either the mould or the microfluidic chip.A comparison with a conventional valve(based on a constrictionexpansion valve)demonstrates that theπ-valve eliminates possible backflow into the valve and reduces the mixing and diffusion during the loading and trigger *** a proof-of-concept,this valve is successfully implemented in a capillary-driven circuit for the determination of benzodiazepine,achieving the successive release of 3 solutions in a 3Dprinted microfluidic chip without external *** results show a 40%increase in the fluorescence intensity using theπ-valve relative to the conventional ***,theπ-valve prevents cross-contamination,minimizes sample use,and facilitates a sophisticated preprogrammed release of fluids,offering a promising tool for conducting automated immunoassays applicable at point-of-

An exploration of the relationship between wastewater viral signals and COVID-19 hospitalizations in Ottawa,Canada

The influence of the capping ligands on the optoelectronic performance,morphology,and ion liberation of CsPbBr_(3)perovskite quantum dots

Perovskite quantum dots(PeQDs)endowed with capping ligands exhibit impressive optoelectronic properties and enable for costefficient solution processing and exciting application *** synthesize and characterize three different PeQDs with the same cubic CsPbBr_(3)core,but which are distinguished by the ligand composition and ***-1 features a binary didodecyldimethylammonium bromide(DDAB)and octanoic acid capping ligand system,with a high surface density of 1.53 nm^(-2),whereas PeQD-2 and PeQD-3 are coated by solely DDAB at a gradually lower surface *** show that PeQD-1 endowed with highest ligand density features the highest dispersibility in toluene of 150 g/L,the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 95%in dilute solution and 59%in a neat film,and the largest core-to-core spacing in neat thin *** further establish that ions are released from the core of PeQD-1 when it is exposed to an electric field,although it comprises a dense coating of one capping ligand per four surface core *** finally exploit these combined findings to the development of a light-emitting electrochemical cell(LEC),where the active layer is composed solely of solution-processed pure PeQDs,without additional *** this device,the ion release is utilized as an advantage for the electrochemical doping process and efficient emissive operation of the LEC.

Laplace plane and low inclination geosynchronous radar mission design

This study is inspired by the Laplace orbit plane property of requiring minimal station-keeping and therefore its potential use for long-term geosynchronous synthetic aperture radar(GEOSAR) imaging. A set of GEOSAR user requirements is presented and analysed to identify significant mission requirements. Imaging geometry and power demand are assessed as a function of relative satellite speed(which is determined largely by choice of orbit inclination). Estimates of the cost of station-keeping as a function of orbit inclination and right ascension are presented to compare the benefits of different orbit choices. The conclusion is that the Laplace plane(and more generally, orbits with inclinations up to 15°) are attractive choices for GEOSAR.
