Decreasing recurrent bowel obstructions,improving quality of life with physiotherapy:Controlled study

AIM To compare(1) quality of life and(2) rate of recurrent small bowel obstructions(SBO) for patients treated with novel manual physiotherapy vs no treatment. METHODS One hundred and three subjects(age 19-89) with a history of recurrent adhesive SBO were treated with a manual physiotherapy called the Clear Passage Approach(CPA) which focused on decreasing adhesive crosslinking in abdominopelvic viscera. Pre-and post-therapy data measured recurring obstructions and quality of life, using a validated test sent 90 d after therapy. Results were compared to 136 untreated control subjects who underwent the same measurements for subjects who did not receive any therapy, which is the normal course for patients with recurring SBO. Comparison of the groups allowed us to assess changes when the physiotherapy was added as an adjunct treatment for patients with recurring *** Despite histories of more prior hospitalizations, obstructions, surgeries, and years impacted by bowel issues, the 103 CPA-treated subjects reported a significantly lower rate of repeat SBO than 136 untreated controls(total obstructions P = 0.0003; partial obstructions P = 0.0076). Subjects treated with the therapy demonstrated significant improvements in five of six total domains in the validated Small Bowel Obstruction Questionnaire(SBO-Q). Domains of diet, pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, quality of life(QOL) and pain severity when compared to post CPA treatment were significantly improved(P < 0.0001). The medication domain was not changed in the CPA treated group(P = 0.176).CONCLUSION CPA physical therapy was effective for patients with adhesive SBO with significantly lower recurrence rate, improvement in reported symptoms and overall quality of life of subjects.

SPLINE REGULARIZATION OF NUMERICAL INVERSION OF MELLIN TRANSFORM

A method is described for inverting the Mellin transform which uses an expansion in Laguerre polynomials and converts the Mellin transform to the Laplace transform, then the Laplace transform is converted to the first kind convolution integral equation by a suitable substitution. The integral equation so obtained is an ill-posed problem and we use the spline regularization to solve it. The performance of the method is illustrated by the inversion of the test functions available in the literature [J. Inst. Math. & Appl. 20 (1977), p. 73], [J. Math. Comp. 53 (1989), p. 589], [J. Sci. Stat. Comp. 4 (1983), p. 164]. The effectiveness of the method is shown by results obtained demonstrated by means of tables and diagrams.

A Permutation Test for Unit Root in an Autoregressive Model

A permutation test (based on a finite random sample of permutations) for unit root in an autoregressive process is considered. The test can easily be carried out in practice and the proposed permutation test is neither limited to large sample sizes nor normal white noises. Simulations show that the power of the permutation test is reasonable when sample sizes are small or when the white noises have a heavy tailed distribution. The test is shown to be consistent.

Objective:To study the chemical profile,antimicrobial properties,and synergistic effect with known antibiotics of essential oil extracted from the marine red macroalgae Centroceras clavulatum(***)Montagne,collected in ***:The chemical composition of the oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass *** oil was evaluated for antibacterial(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Escherichia coli,Bacillus subtilis,Micrococcus luteus,Staphylococcus aureus,and Klebsiella pneumoniae),and antifungal activity(Candida albicans,Candida glabrata,Candida krusei,and Candida parapsilosis),by the disc diffusion *** minimum inhibitory and minimum microbicidal concentrations of the oil were determined,as well as the synergistic effects of its application combined with the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and fluconazole,by the checkerboard ***:Thirty molecules were identified in the essential oil,comprising 96.27%of the total oil *** such as carvacrol(36.06%)were the most abundant compounds,followed by caryophyllene(14.67%),endo-borneol(9.04%),pyroterebic acid(3.23%)and caryophyllene oxide(3.13%).The oil exhibited a moderate antimicrobial activity with inhibition zone diameters ranging from 9.0 to 15.0 *** minimum inhibitory concentration values varied between 0.9 and 14.7 mg/mL,and Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli were the more sensitive bacteria with 0.9 and 1.9 mg/mL,*** minimum microbicidal concentration values ranged from 0.4 to 14.7 mg/mL.A significant synergic action was observed when the oil was applied in combination with ciprofloxacin and fluconazole,with fractional inhibitory concentration index values ranging from 0.31 to *** was found in 80%of the combinations and a 2 to 16-fold reduction of antibiotics MIC was ***:Our findings suggest that the essential oil of Centroceras clavulatum should be further appraised for its potential use in the management of multi-drug resistant microo

Evaluation of MODIS Products in the Great Australian Bight and Adjacent Coastal Waters

satellite remote sensing data can produce global environmental data and is easily accessible and widely used by the scientific and non-scientific community. However, to use satellite data, it is important to know its limitations and how it validates against in situ measurements for the different regions. Here, field measurements of chlorophyll-a concentration and euphotic depth within the Great Australian Bight, Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf were used to validate ocean colour products derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Aqua satellite. The field data include in situ and in vivo chlorophyll-a concentration, which were compared against MODIS chlorophyll-a products derived from three algorithms (OC3M, Carder, and Garver-Siegel-Maritorena (GSM)), as well as euphotic depth measurements derived from photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) profiles, which were compared against two MODIS euphotic depth products (derived semi-analytically and from surface chlorophyll-a). The OC3M product performed well in open waters, with errors below the 35% NAsa accepted limit, but it overestimated chlorophyll-a values in shallow (<50 m) waters. The GSM product produced the lowest errors, but also showed a smaller dynamic range, while the Carder product produced higher errors than GSM and it also showed small dynamic range. The relationships between the MODIS and in situ euphotic depth were robust, with errors lower than 20%. MODIS products showed weaker or no significant relationships to in situ measurements in the Eastern Great Australian Bight. This is thought to be due to the summertime subsurface upwelling pool that is characteristic of the area. Based on these results, the OC3M product provides the most reliable estimates of chlorophyll-a, and is recommended for further applications of MODIS imagery, if the limitations in shallow waters are taken into account.
