Noninvasive Ventilation Interfaces in the Treatment of Acute Respiratory Insufficiency: A Critical Review

Background: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is an important therapeutic modality for the treatment of acute respiratory failure (ARF). In this review, we critically analyze randomized controlled trials on the most used NIV interfaces in the treatments of ARF. Methods: The searches were conducted in the Medline, Lilacs, PubMed, Cochrane, and Pedro data.a.es from June to November 2021. The inclusion criteria were Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published from 2016 to 2021 in Portuguese, Spanish, or English and involving adults (aged ≥ 18 years). The eligibility criteria for article selection were based on the PICO strategy: Population—Adults with ARF;Intervention—NIV Therapy;Comparison—Conventional oxygen therapy, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy, or NIV;Outcome—improvement in ARF. The search for articles and the implementation of the inclusion criteria were independently conducted by two researchers. Results: Seven scientific articles involving 574 adults with ARF due to various causes, such as chest trauma, decompensated heart failure, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and postoperative period, among others, were included. The interfaces cited in the studies included an oronasal mask, nasal mask, full-face mask, and helmet. In addition, some favorable outcomes related to NIV were reported in the studies, such as a reduction in the rate of orotracheal intubation and shorter length of stay in the ICU. Conclusions: The most cited interfaces in the treatment of ARF were the oronasal mask and the helmet.

In Brazil,gastric cancer is the third most common type of cancer among men and fifth among women,with an estimated 13360 new cases among men and 7870 among women each year during the 2020-2022 *** study presents reflections and attempts to add knowledge to the theme of quality of life(QoL)in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and describes some of its characteristics in three regions of Brazil,with an evaluation of the disease’s impacts in various dimensions of life,as reported by the patients *** performed a narrative review of the literature and a data analysis of studies on QoL in Brazilian patients treated for gastric adenocarcinoma from three different cities in three geographic regions:Brasília(the midwest),Jaú(the southeast),and Macapá(the north).

In this paper, we study the large time behavior of solutions of the parabolic semilinear equation δtu-div（a（x）△↓u） = -｜u｜^αu in （0,∞） × R^N, where α 〉 0 is constant and a∈ Cb^1（R^N） is a symmetric periodic matrix satisfying some ellipticity *** an integrable initial data u0 and α ∈ （2/N, 3/N）, we prove that the large time behavior of solutions is given by the solution U（t, x） of the homogenized linear problem δtU-div（a^h△↓U）=0,U（0） = C, where a^h is the homogenized matrix of a（x）, C is a positive constant and δ is the Dirac measure at 0.

High-throughput phenotyping of two plant-size traits of Eucalyptus species using neural networks

In forest modeling to estimate the volume of wood,artificial intelligence has been shown to be quite effi-cient,especially using artificial neural networks(ANNs).Here we tested whether diameter at breast height(DBH)and the total plant height(Ht)of eucalyptus can be pre-dicted at the stand level using spectral bands measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multispectral sensor and vegetation *** do so,using the data obtained by the UAV as input variables,we tested different configurations(number of hidden layers and number of neurons in each layer)of ANNs for predicting DBH and Ht at stand level for different Eucalyptus *** experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates,with 20 trees in each experimental *** treatments comprised five Eucalyptus species(***,***,***,***-dis,and ***)and Corymbria *** and Ht for each plot at the stand level were measured seven times in separate overflights by the UAV,so that the multispectral sensor could obtain spectral bands to calculate vegetation indices(VIs).ANNs were then constructed using spectral bands and VIs as input layers,in addition to the categorical variable (species), to predict DBH and Ht at the stand level simultaneously. This report represents one of the first appli-cations of high-throughput phenotyping for plant size traits in Eucalyptus species. In general, ANNs containing three hidden layers gave better statistical performance (higher esti-mated r, lower estimated root mean squared error-RMSE) due to their greater capacity for self-learning. Among these ANNs, the best contained eight neurons in the first layer, seven in the second, and five in the third (8 − 7 − 5). The results reported here reveal the potential of using the gener-ated models to perform accurate forest inventories based on spectral bands and VIs obtained with a UAV multispectral sensor and ANNs, reducing labor and time.

Effect of climate and altitude on plant community composition and richness in Brazilian inselbergs

Plant communities are shaped by multiple factors along environmental gradients;however,studies are limited on how environmental filtering drives community composition and species richness on tropical *** evaluate the influence of altitude and climatic variables related to temperature and precipitation on plant community composition and species richness on Brazilian *** assume as a premise that both climate and altitude would induce changes on plant community composition and species richness at the local *** used plant inventory data from 370 sampling units across four inselberg sites in the Atlantic Forest of espírito Santo State,south-eastern *** tested the univariate and multivariate effects of altitude and climate variables on community composition and species richness with multiple *** in species richness between inselbergs were evaluated using sample-based data to estimate rarefaction and extrapolation *** addition,differences in species composition and taxonomic beta diversity were examined via novel frequency-based metrics.A contrasting climate pattern was observed between the inselberg sites,with south sites being wet compared to the dry conditions found in northern *** richness by rarefaction showed a similar pattern within regional sites;however,there were marked differences between *** richness and beta diversity showed significant differences among sites,with higher values in southern sites than in northern *** a multi-model comparison between inselberg sites,altitude significantly influenced community composition and species richness and explained more variance than climate *** finding suggested that climate could act to some extent on these tropical inselbergs;however,altitude was a better predictor of plant community composition and species richness at the local level.

The use of AVL （automatic vehicle locator） systems has increased considerably. By using an AVL system, it is possible to know vehicle positions at the dispatch center, which allows the use of several applications, such as safety and security, logistics, and emergency response. High communication and data storage costs, however, lead to a low position update rate with the AVL products available, causing poor track representation, and making the route determined by the vehicle in urban areas almost illegible. This paper proposes a new approach by using intelligent techniques to choose the best position update moment to improve track representations. The principle underlying these techniques is based on vehicle status analysis （speed, direction and timing）, which tries to determine when a position update is required, in order to better represent the path that a vehicle has traced, thus avoiding excessive communication and data storage. Therefore, the better the correspondence between the traced track and the real track followed by the vehicle, the greater the added value offered by system applications. This enhancement to the representation of the track allows the creation of new applications in the realm of AVL systems, particularly for situations where accuracy plays an important role.

Evaluation of DNA Extraction Methods for Detection of <i>Leishmania</i>by Polymerase Chain Reaction

There are several methods used to obtain DNA from cells;however, the quantity, integrity, and purity of DNA vary among the methods, which may interfere with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results. The objective was to determine the most efficient and cost-effective method that provides the best DNA yield and PCR results. Three methods of DNA isolation were compared: 20% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), guanidine isothiocyanate-phenol-chloroform (GTPC), and DNA extraction using a commercial kit (GE Healthcare GenomicPrep Blood DNA Isolation KitTM). Human peripheral blood samples were inoculated with 104 promastigotes of Leishmania infantum. DNA was quantified and PCR was performed with 13A/13B primers. The results showed that a higher DNA yield was obtained using the GTPC technique (214.51 ng/μL), followed by SDS (26.16 ng/μL) and the commercial kit (10.99 ng/μL). We concluded that while all of the techniques were effective for obtaining DNA, the GTPC method provided the best yield and the brightest bands.
