Mechanical behavior of iron ore tailings under standard compression and extension triaxial stress paths

The disposal of mining tailings has increasingly focused on the use of dry *** structures offer more security since they use filtered and compacted *** of the construction method and the heights achieved,the material that compounds the structure can be subjected to different stress paths along the failure *** theoretical framework considered in the design of these structures generally is the critical state soil mechanics(CSSM).However,the data in the literature concerning the uniqueness of critical state line(CSL)is still controversial as the soil is subjected to different stress *** respect to tailings,this question is even more *** paper studies two tailings with different gradings due to the beneficial processes over extension and compression paths.A series of drained and undrained triaxial tests was conducted over a range of initial densities and stress *** the q-p'plane,different critical stress ratio(M)values were obtained for compression and extension stress ***,the critical state friction angle is very similar with a slightly higher critical state friction angle for extension *** stress path dependent CSLs were obtained in the n-lnp0 plane with the extension tests below the CSL defined in *** the fines content,the studied tailings presented very similar M and critical state friction angle ***,the fines content af-fects the volumetric behavior of the studied tailings and the CSLs on the n-lnp0 plane shift downwards with the increasing fines content for compression and extension *** relation to dilatancy analysis,the fines content did not present an evident influence on the dilatancy of the ***,different values of mean stress ratio N were obtained between compression and extension tests and can corroborate the existence of non-unique CSLs for these materials.

Partition coefficient prediction of Baker's yeast invertase in aqueous two phase systems using hybrid group method data handling neural network

A hybrid GMDH neural network model has been developed in order to predict the partition coefficients of invertase from Baker's yeast. ATPS experiments were carried out changing the molar average mass of PEG(1500–6000 Da), p H(4.0–7.0), percentage of PEG(10.0–20.0 w/w), percentage of MgSo_4(8.0–16.0 w/w), percentage of the cell homogenate(10.0–20.0 w/w) and the percentage of MnSo_4(0–5.0 w/w) added as cosolute. The network evaluation was carried out comparing the partition coefficients obtained from the hybrid GMDH neural network with the experimental data using different statistical metrics. The hybrid GMDH neural network model showed better fitting(AARD = 32.752%) as well as good generalization capacity of the partition coefficients of the ATPS than the original GMDH network approach and a BPANN model. Therefore hybrid GMDH neural network model appears as a powerful tool for predicting partition coefficients during downstream processing of biomolecules.

Structural metamaterials with negative mechanical/thermomechanical indices: A review

Structural metamaterials presenting negative values of one or more mechanical and thermomechanical indices–namely the Poisson's ratio, the linear compressibility, and the coefficient of thermal expansion – are the promising candidates to the applications in many fields, ranging from precision mechanics to biomedical devices or energy absorption. Although scattered mentions may be found in the literature since the late eighties of 20th century, the systematic research efforts concerning these materials became effective much later. The present work is to review the main scientific contributions to the topic in the last five years. This paper first deals with those metamaterials showing a single negative index, and then proceeds to analyze the much less frequent instances of coupled negative indices, with emphasis on the so-called anepectic case, which exhibits an unusual thermomechanical response.

High Speed Signal Wavelength Conversion Using Stimulated Raman Effect in Ultrasmall Silicon-on-Insulator optical Waveguides

We propose the high speed signal wavelength conversion based on stimulated Raman effect on silicon waveguides. Simulation results of non-return-to-zero （NRZ） pseudorandom bit sequence （2^7-1 code） at 500-Gb/s rate of conversion in an ultrasmall silicon-on-insulator （SoI） optical waveguide are presented by co-propagating pump optical field. The most attractive issue is that the inverted converted signal can be obtained at the same wavelength as that of primary signal. In addition, the conversion performances, including extinction ratio （ER） and average peak power of conversion signal, depend strongly on the launching pump intensity.

Evolutionary fingerprint, phylogenetic and forest structure of tropical montane Atlantic cloud forests along an elevation gradient

Low platelet count: Predictor of death and graft loss after liver transplantation

BACKGRoUND The impact of platelets on liver transplantation(LT) is well recognized, but not completely understood. Platelets exert dichotomous effects on the graft and on the patient. on the one hand, they are essential for primary hemostasis and tissue repair and regeneration. on the other hand, they support ischemia/reperfusion injury and inflammatory processes. Recent evidence has shown a new role for platelet count(PC) in predicting outcomes after *** To evaluate if low PC is a predictor of short-and long-term outcomes after *** Four hundred and eighty consecutive LT patients were retrospectively *** from the preoperative to the seventh postoperative day(PoD) were considered. C-statistic analysis defined the ideal cutoff point for PC. Cox regression was performed to check whether low PC was a predictor of death,retransplantation or primary changes in graft function within one year after *** The highest median PC was 86 × 109/L [interquartile range(IQR) = 65–100 ×109/L] on seventh PoD, and the lowest was 51 × 109/L(IQR = 38–71 × 109/L) on third PoD. The C-statistic defined a PC on fifth PoD as the ideal cutoff point for predicting death and retransplantation. In the multivariate analysis, platelets on 5 PoD was an independent risk factor for death at 12 mo after LT [hazard ratio(HR) = 2.01; 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.06-3.79;P = 0.031]. In the Cox regression, patients with PC on 5 PoD had worse graft survival rates up to one year after LT(HR = 2.76; 95%CI 1.52-4.99; P =0.001).CoNCLUSIoN PC on 5 PoD is an independent predictor of death in the first year after LT. These results are in agreement with other studies that indicate that low PC after LT is associated with negative outcomes.

Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of on consisted of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

Vertical stratification of bat assemblages in flooded and unflooded Amazonian forests

Tropical rainforests usually have multiple strata that results in a vertical stratification of ecological opportunities foranimals. We investigated if this stratification influences the way bats use the vertical space in flooded and unflooded forests of theCentral Amazon. Using mist-nets set in the canopy (17 to 35 m high) and in the understorey (0 to 3 m high) we sampled four sitesin upland unflooded forests (terra firme), three in forests seasonally flooded by nutrient-rich water (varzea), and three in forestsseasonally flooded by nutrient-poor water (igapo). Using rarefaction curves we found that species richness in the understorey andcanopy were very similar. An ordination analysis clearly separated the bat assemblages of the canopy from those of the understorey inboth flooded and unflooded habitats. Gleaning carnivores were clearly associated with the understorey, whereas frugivores wereabundant in both strata. of the frugivores, Carollinae and some Stenodermatinae were understorey specialists, but several Stenodermatinaemostly used the canopy. The first group mainly includes species that, in general, feed on fruits of understorey shrubs,whereas the second group feed on figs and other canopy fruits. We conclude that vertical stratification in bat communities occurseven within forests with lower canopy heights, such as Amazonian seasonally flooded forests, and that the vertical distribution ofbat species is closely related to their diet and foraging behaviour.
