prB expression in esophageal mucosa of individuals at high risk for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus

AIM: To investigate the prb expression in a large group of patients with history of chronic exposure to the main risk factors for development of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. METHoDs: one hundred and seventy asymptomatic individuals at high risk for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (consumption of more than 80 g of ethanol and 10 cigarettes/d for at least 10 years) underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsies of the esophageal mucosa. As a control group, specimens of esophageal mucosa obtained from 20 healthy subjects were also studied. Immunohistochemical assessment of the tissues was performed using a monoclonal antibody anti-prB protein. REsULTs: Absence of the prB staining, indicating loss of RB function, was observed in 33 (19.4%) of the individuals at risk for esophageal cancer, but in none of the healthy controls (P oss of prb expression increased in a stepwise fashion according to the severity of the histological findings (P ormal mucosa (11/97 or 11.3%), chronic esophagitis (17/60 or 28.3%), low-grade dysplasia (3/10 or 30%), high-grade dysplasia 1/2 or 50%) and squamous cell carcinoma (1/1 or 100%). CoNCLUsIoN: our findings suggest that abnormal expression of the prB protein may be implicated in the process of esophageal carcinogenesis. Additional studies are warranted to define the role of the prBprotein as a biomarker for development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in individuals at high risk for this malignancy.

The paper designs an automated valuation model to predict the price of residential property in Coventry,United Kingdom,and achieves this by means of geostatistical Kriging,a popularly employed distance-based learning *** traditional applications of distance-based learning,this papers implements non-Euclidean distance metrics by approximating road distance,travel time and a linear combination of both,which this paper hypothesizes to be more related to house prices than straight-line(Euclidean)*** that–to undertake Kriging–a valid variogram must be produced,this paper exploits the conforming properties of the Minkowski distance function to approximate a road distance and travel time metric.A least squares approach is put forth for variogram parameter selection and an ordinary Kriging predictor is implemented for *** predictor is then validated with 10-fold crossvalidation and a spatially aware checkerboard hold out method against the almost exclusively employed,Euclidean *** a comparison of results for each distance metric,this paper witnesses a goodness of fit(r2)result of 0.6901±0.18 sD for real estate price prediction compared to the traditional(Euclidean)approach obtaining a suboptimal r2 value of 0.66±0.21 sD.

Water pollution caused by heavy metals ions has been gaining attention in recent years,increasing the interest in the development of methodologies for their efficient removal focusing on the adsorption process for these *** current challenge faced by adsorption processes is the adequate adsorbent immobilization for removal and ***,the present work aimed at producing a faujasite zeolite nanocomposite decorated with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles for Pb^2+ions adsorption in an aqueous medium improving magnetic removal and *** a result,a high surface area(434.4 m^2·g^-1)for the nanocomposite and an 18.93 emu·g^-1 saturation magnetization value were obtained,indicating magnetic removal in a promising material for adsorption *** nanocomposite regeneration capacity evaluated by magnetic recovery after 24 h suspension presented a high Pb^2+ion adsorptive capacity(98.4%)in the first *** 98%of the Pb^2+ions were adsorbed in the second *** this way,the synthesized faujasite:cobalt ferrite nanocomposite reveals itself as a promising alternative in adsorption processes,aiming at a synergic effect of FAU zeolite high adsorptive activity and the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles magnetic activity,allowing for adsorbent recovery from the aqueous medium via magnetic force and successive adsorptive cycles.

Modelling the role of ground-true riparian vegetation for providing regulating services in a Mediterranean watershed

Intensive agricultural and industrial activities are often considered major sources of water ***,riparian vegetation(RV)is increasingly being promoted as a solution to balance the potentially adverse effects that agriculture may have on water ***,existing RV is often overlook in recent modelling efforts,failing to capture the current amount of ecosystem services ***,we used the soil and Water Assessment Tool ecohydrological model to simulate the influence of ground-true RV on i)nutrient(nitrate and total phosphorus)and sediment exports from agricultural areas and ii)its effect for in-stream *** results are further compared against a set of hypothetical scenarios of different RV widths and different *** results point to a great rele-vance of existing RV in controlling in-stream concentration of sediments and nutrients where pressure from agriculture is highest,preventing them to surpass limits set in the EU Water Framework *** the other hand,in areas with industry discharges,the role of RV is limited and model results suggest that restoring RV would have limited *** illustrate how existing RV may already provide strong but not acknowledged water quality regulation services,how these services can differ substantially between nearby streams,and that effective strategies to improve water quality using RV must acknowledge existing patterns of vegetation,land use and contamination sources.

The disposal of mining tailings has increasingly focused on the use of dry *** structures offer more security since they use filtered and compacted *** of the construction method and the heights achieved,the material that compounds the structure can be subjected to different stress paths along the failure *** theoretical framework considered in the design of these structures generally is the critical state soil mechanics(CssM).However,the data in the literature concerning the uniqueness of critical state line(CsL)is still controversial as the soil is subjected to different stress *** respect to tailings,this question is even more *** paper studies two tailings with different gradings due to the beneficial processes over extension and compression paths.A series of drained and undrained triaxial tests was conducted over a range of initial densities and stress *** the q-p'plane,different critical stress ratio(M)values were obtained for compression and extension stress ***,the critical state friction angle is very similar with a slightly higher critical state friction angle for extension *** stress path dependent CsLs were obtained in the n-lnp0 plane with the extension tests below the CsL defined in *** the fines content,the studied tailings presented very similar M and critical state friction angle ***,the fines content af-fects the volumetric behavior of the studied tailings and the CsLs on the n-lnp0 plane shift downwards with the increasing fines content for compression and extension *** relation to dilatancy analysis,the fines content did not present an evident influence on the dilatancy of the ***,different values of mean stress ratio N were obtained between compression and extension tests and can corroborate the existence of non-unique CsLs for these materials.

The energy challenge requires a broad range of options for energy harvesting,storage,and *** have produced polymeric coatings by spraying,to be used as electrolyte and electrodes in a fl exible electrochemical double layer capacitor.A thermoplastic polyurethane and a low molecular weight block copolyether were employed with LiClo_(4) to prepare solid polymeric *** black(CB)and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNTs)were dispersed in the polymer blend electrolyte to produce nanostructured composite *** conductivities increased with the addition of block copolyether and carbon nanotubes to the electrolyte and electrode,*** electron microscopy(sEM)and atomic force microscope(AFM)images of the nanocomposite electrodes showed nanoagglomerates of CB connected by carbon *** solid supercapacitor prepared with these new materials as electrolyte and electrodes showed superior performance to other similar *** resulting safe and fl exible multilayer device can meet the requirements of modern devices.
