Despite therapeutic advances in recent decades, colorectal cancer is still the third most frequent neoplasm worldwide, with significant morbidity and mortality in young and middle-aged adults. Therefore, advance in treatment options for patients who are afflicted with tumor subtypes without effective therapies is needed. Antarctica macroalgae are substances-producing organisms with important biological activities, in which antitumor properties are investigated, showing promising cytotoxic results. There are no reports so far showing antitumor activity of macroalgae Palmaria decipiens extracts against colorectal tumors. This study aims to evaluate the effect of macroalgae P. decipiens extract from Antarctic on tumor cell HCT-116 and non-tumor cell HaCaT lines. The phenolic compounds present were identified by high performance liquid chromatography. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by the DPPH radical inhibition method and cytotoxicity was evaluated through MTT assay. Cell death events were identified using dual staining with acridine orange/ethidium bromide and flow cytometry. The quantification of phenolic compounds present in the extracts identified the presence of three main compounds among them is kaempferol. The metanolic extract showed inhibition within 72 h of treatment in HCT-116 and potential antioxidant activity. The results presented in this study point out an imbalance in the redox metabolism and also a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential integrity, most likely inducing cell death mechanisms after 72 h exposure to treatment with metanolic extract. These events could be observed by penetration of propidium iodide through membrane damage. The results indicate that the extract of the Antarctic macroalgae P. decipiens interferes in the mechanisms of action of colorectal cancer tumor cells, acting as a potential antitumor and antioxidant agent.

Productivity and Water-Use Efficiency of Sorghum in Rainfed Regime in the Semi-Arid Region of Brazil

Sorghum has become ever more prominent on the global energy scene, with studies in the area becoming extremely important. Agricultural production in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast is intrinsically dependent on rainfall in the region. However, on both inter- and intra-annual scales, the rainfall regime is quite irregular. The aim of this study was to evaluate the productivity of sorghum grown under a rainfed regime, and the water-use efficiency of crops in the semi-arid region of the northeast of Brazil. The work was carried out in the city of Tabuleiro do Norte in the semi-arid region of the State of Ceará. Mean productivity of the sorghum was 919.42 kg·ha-1, with maximum values being recorded for lot 02 (1032 kg·ha-1), lot 03 (1102 kg·ha-1), lot 04 (2143 kg·ha-1) and lot 12 (1367 kg·ha-1). The greatest value for water-use efficiency, 1.13 m3·kg-1, was found for lot 04, while the smallest value, 4.83 m3·kg-1 was seen in lot 02. It was found that the low productivity of sorghum in a rainfed regime shows that the lack of success in production systems in semi-arid regions is not due to the total amount of rainfall, but rather the spatial and temporal distribution of the rains, as well as the occurrence of hot, dry spells. Furthermore, it can be seen that the best ratio of grain production to water demand shows a strong correlation with the distribution of water throughout the cycle, and not only with the total volume.

目的：报告在西班牙Castilla-Leo地区患有渗出性老年性黄斑变性（AMD）的样本人群的流行病学特点，并与一组来自同一地区和相同年龄人群进行比较。方法：在本次观察性前瞻性调查中，我们访问了在一家地区性诊所接受光动力学疗法的AMD患者。患者报告了高血压、高血脂、吸烟的病史，检查患者虹膜颜色并分为浅色（绿色、蓝色、灰色）和深色（淡褐色、褐色、黑色）。结果：共有343名患者接受了访问，平均年龄为74．9岁（55～93岁），其中64．5％为女性，35．5％为男性，有45．1％的患者虹膜颜色被划为浅色。这些患者中，有50％有动脉性高血压，15．3％接受高胆固醇血症治疗，30．2％吸烟或者已经戒烟（女性中占80．9％）。结论：在渗出性AMD患者中，虹膜颜色为浅色的频率较高。在我们的调查中，其他渗出性AMD其他的风险因素有男性的吸烟习惯、未接受高胆固醇血症治疗、患者为女性身份等。

Breeding programs have sought to determine the minimum period of genotype evaluation, which is a long term-process. The objective of this work was to determine the association between qualitative traits of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) and relate maturity to other characteristics. To carry out this work, 113 families of full-sibs and half-sibs were planted in Viçosa (MG), Brazil, in a randomized block experimental design arranged in sets (treatment groups). The association between the analyzed characteristics was studied using path analysis and canonical correlation techniques. It was found that lower-yielding but larger-fruit bearing genotypes of passion fruit plant also require more days until reaching anthesis. Round-shaped fruits are linked to higher contents of total soluble solids. More intense pulp color also indicates higher contents of total soluble solids. The riper the fruit, the more intensely orange is the color of the pulp. The ratio between the levels of total soluble solids and total titrimetric acidity was the main determinant of pulp color for passion fruit.

Background: Suicide among physicians is a serious public health issue, with an extremely complex and multifactorial behavior. Aim: The aim of this study was to use the theme “Suicide among Physicians” to exemplify the analysis of methodological similarities between the scientific content available at MEDLINE and BVS databases, as scientific research tools. Methods: This is a systematic review with metanalysis. The following combinations of keywords were used for data search in the referred databases: “suicide” AND “physicians” AND “public heath”. Results: Three hundred and thirteen publications were identified, but only 16 studies were chosen. Great association was found between MEDLINE and BVS databases and the odds Ratio regarding the theme: “Suicide among physicians”. Conclusions: Considering the similarities found in the utilization of the two analyzed databases, it was possible to identify that suicide among physicians is associated with the exercise of an important professional role in the society and in the workplace. With regard to scientific information, the p-value-obtained value (o be statistically significant for the association between the suggested theme and the methodological similarities of the scientific information available in the analyzed databases. Thus, these open-access research tools are considered scientific reliable tools.

Mangifera indica (mango) is a typically tropical fruit with considerable economic value. Brazil features a wide variety of cultivars of this fruit, most of which are known under several different names. Indeed, the nomenclature of mango varieties is still quite confusing. Up to now there has been no well-defined scientific principle to differentiate them. The objective of the present work is to compare the different clustering methods in assessing genetic divergence among mango accessions, as well as identify the minimum efficient descriptors for that crop. A total of 20 mango accessions in Cáceres, Mato Grosso state, Brazil were evaluated. When building dissimilarity matrices, the descriptors were divided according to the following groups: leaf, flower/inflorescence, fruit, seed and growth habit/ripening period. With these divisions, combinations were performed among the groups of descriptors. The similarity index was used to obtain the dissimilarity matrices. Later, the accessions were clustered using the methods of Tocher, Ward and UPGMA. The study observed that it was possible to reduce the number of descriptors from 64 to 35, and that the clustering methods were compatible with the study of the genetic diversity of mango.

Shrinking lung refers to a rare complication of systemic lupus erythematosus and is characterized by unexplained dyspnea, a restrictive pattern in lung function tests, and elevation of the diaphragmatic hemicuples. It is postulated to have a predilection for female involvement and occurs mainly during late stages of the disease. Chest X-rays usually show small, diaphragmatic lungs. occasional basal atelectasis may be present. Chest tomography usually shows reduced lung volumes with diaphragmatic elevation, occasional basal atelectasis, without severe pulmonary or pleuropulmonary disease. Shrinking lung can cause significant morbidity and occasional mortality. There is no definitive therapy, while corticosteroids may decrease symptoms and improve lung function in some patients. The objective of this study was to describe the main imaging findings in Shrinking Lung, an important pulmonary alteration in lupus patients. We highlight the characteristics observed on radiography and computed tomography, with an emphasis on computed tomography. It is important that every radiologist is prepared to recognize these findings and understand the possible clinical repercussions.
