Risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in northern Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

AIM: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in northern Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was performed between may 2011 and April 2012. A total of 1100 patients (male/female, 483/617) were included in this study. DR was defined following the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) severity scale. All included patients accepted a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including retinal photographs. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) after adjusting for age and gender. RESULTS: Retinopathy was present in 307 patients with a prevalence of 27.9%. In univariate logistic analysis, presence of DR was associated with longer duration of diabetes (OR, 5.70; 95% CI, 2.91-12.56), higher concentration of fasting blood glucose (OR, 12.94; 95% CI, 2.40-67.71), higher level of glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c (OR, 5.50; 95% CI, 3.78-11.97) and insulin treatment (OR, 6.99; 95%Cl, 1.39-35.12). The lifestyle of patients with T2DM including smoking, alcohol consumption and regular exercise seemed not associated with the development of DR. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that fasting serum glucose concentration, HbA1c level, duration of diabetes and insulin treatment are potential risk factors for DR in northern Chinese patients with T2DM, while the lifestyle of included patients seems not associated with DR.

AIM:To evaluate whether recombinant complement factor B(CFB)short hairpin RNA(sh RNA)reduces laserinduced choroidal neovascularization(CNV)in rats.METHODS:Laser-induced rat CNV model was established,and then the animals underwent fundus fluorescence angiography(FFA)and hematoxylin and eosin(HE)staining.On day 3 and 7 after photocoagulation,the expression of CFB and membrane attack complex(maC)was detected by immunhischemistry.A recombinant CFBsh RNA plasmid was constructed.CFB and scrambled sh RNA plasmids were intravenous injected into rats via the tail vein on the day of laser treatment,respectively.On day 7,the incidence of CNV was determined by FFA,and the expression of CFB and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)in retinal pigment epithelium(RPE)/choroidal tissues was detected by immunhischemistry,Western blot and/or semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)in CFB and scrambled sh RNA groups.The possible adverse effects of CFB-sh RNA injection were assessed by transmission electron microscopy and electroretinography.RESULTS:FFA and HE results indicated that a laserinduced rat CNV model was successfully established on day 7 after photocoagulation.The expression of CFB and maC was extremely weak in normal retina and choroid,and increased on day 3 after photocoagulation.However,it started to reduce on day 7.CFB sh RNA plasmid was successfully constructed and induced CFB knockdown in the retinal and choroidal tissues.FFA showed CFB knockdown significantly inhibited incidence of CNV in rats.Moreover,CFB knockdown significantly inhibited the expression of VEGF in RPE/choroidal tissues.CFB sh RNA caused no obvious side effects in eyes.CONCLUSION:CFB knockdown significantly inhibits the formation and development of CNV in vivo through reducing the expression of VEGF,which is a potential therapy target.The alternative pathway of complement activation plays an important role in CNV formation.

AIM：To evaluate the effects of posterior corneal surface measurements on the accuracy of total estimated corneal astigmatism.METHODS：Fifty-seven patients with toric intraocular lens（IOL） implantation and posterior corneal astigmatism exceeding 0.5 diopter were enrolled in this retrospective study.The keratometric astigmatism（KA） and total corneal astigmatism（TA） were measured using a Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera to assess the outcomes of AcrySof IOL implantation.Toric lOLs were evaluated in 26 eyes using KA measurements and in 31 eyes using TA measurements.Preoperative corneal astigmatism and postoperative refractive astigmatism were recorded for statistical analysis.The cylindrical power of toric lOLs was estimated in all eyes.RESULTS：In all cases,the difference of toric IOL astigmatism magnitude between KA and TA measurements for the estimation of preoperative corneal astigmatism was statistically significant.Of a total of 57 cases,the 50.88%decreased from Tn to Tn-1 and 10.53%decreased from Tn to Tn-2.In all cases,5.26%increased from Tn to Tn＋1.The mean postoperative astigmatism within the TA group was significantly lower than that in the KA group.CONCLUSION：The accuracy of total corneal astigmatism calculations and the efficacy of toric IOL correction can be enhanced by measuring both the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces using a Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera.

海洋占地球水资源总量的97%,地表面积的70%以上。随着化石燃料等不可再生能源的持续消耗与可再生能源的快速发展,人们对海洋资源的利用越来越重视。海洋能包括潮汐能、波浪能、温差能和盐差能等。其中盐差能是海水和淡水相互作用产生的能量,是以化学能形式存在的海洋能,这种能量较多产生在河口处。目前,压力延迟渗透技术、反电渗析技术和电容混合技术是转换盐差能的三种主要技术。本文构建了一种基于电容混合技术的新型盐差电池,使用二硫化钼和多壁碳纳米管复合物电极作为阳极,活性炭作为阴极。将两种不同离子储存机制的材料复合在一起,二硫化钼具有类似石墨烯的层状结构,层间间距约为石墨烯的两倍,是一种可以与钠离子发生插层反应的电池电极材料。多壁碳纳米管具有典型的双电层效应,放电时在其表面吸附钠离子的同时,可以帮助钠离子更快地进入二硫化钼层间,加快离子传输效率和盐差能的转换效率。对该复合材料进行物理和电化学表征,并与活性炭电极组装的盐差电池,测试其盐差能转换能力。浓度响应电压150 mV,经过一个完整的四步循环后,转换能量密度可达6.96 J·g^(-1)。该器件原材料价格较低,并且不使用离子膜,更加环保,为转换盐差能的研究提供了一种新途径。

The lattice expansion caused by the reduction of Ce(Ⅳ)to Ce(Ⅲ)impeded the development of the CeO_(2)as an effective electrode material for electrochemical supercapacitors.Herein,we prepared CeO_(2)-clay composites through a one-step hydrothermal method.The interlayer structures of clays efficiently accommodate volume changes induced by crystal lattice expansion to achieve ultra-long cycle stability.After 60000 charge-discharge cycles,the capacitance retention rate of the assembled asymmetric supercapacitors is as high as~-100%.The key findings of this work reveal the potential application of clays in achieving ultralong cycle stability of the CeO_(2)electrode material,paving the way for further application of the CeO_(2)in electrochemical energy storage.

Objective:To investigate the effect and possible mechanism of hydroxysafflor yellow A(HSYA) on human immortalized keratinocyte cell proliferation and migration.Methods:HaCaT cells were treated with HSYA.Cell proliferation was detected by the cell counting kit-8 assay,and cell migration was measured using wound healing assay and Transwell migration assay.The mRNA and protein expression levels of heparin-binding epidermal growth factor(EGF)-like growth factor(HBEGF),EGF receptor(EGFR),phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K),protein kinase B(AKT),mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR),and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR) and Western blot,respectively.Circ_0084443-overexpressing HaCaT cells and empty plasmid HaCaT cells were constructed using the lentiviral stable transfection and treated with HSYA.The expression of circ_0084443 was detected by qRT-PCR.Results:HSYA(800 μmol/L) significantly promoted HaCaT cell proliferation and migration(P0.05).Conclusion:HSYA played an accelerative role in HaCaT cell proliferation and migration,which may be attributable to activating HBEGF/EGFR and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways,and had a particular inhibitory effect on the keratinocyte negative regulator circ_0084443.

manganese phosphates have shown excellent performances and great potential in electrochemical energy storage,which are demonstrated by research works published in recent years.For manganese phosphates,the open-framework structures with large channels and cavities endow them with good ion conductivity and charge storage capacity.In this review,we present the recent progress on manganese phosphates,by focusing on their advantages/disadvantages and potential applications as a new class of electrode materials in supercapacitors.The structural characteristics,synthesis methods,and mineral sources to prepare these manganese phosphates are investigated,together with the modification,as they strongly affect the electrochemical energy storage performance.Attentions are paid to those hybrid-type materials,where strong synergistic effects exist.In the summary,interlayer engineering for the manganese phosphates and hybrid-types are proposed and discussed.

Owing to limited observations,it remains unknown whether the impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)on the Indian Ocean-Northwest Pacific(IO-NWP)climate showed decadal changes in the early 20th century.Using multi-source reanalysis and hindcast datasets from the ECMWF and NOAA extending back to 1901,this study investigates interdecadal variations of the impact of ENSO on the IO-NWP climate from 1901 to 2009.It is found that the influence of ENSO on the IO-NWP climate shows“strong-weak-strong”interdecadal change during 1901-2009.This is characterized by much weaker Indian Ocean sea surface temperature(SST)warming and a weaker NWP subtropical anticyclone(NWPSA)in the following summer of El Ni?o during 1946-1967,compared with those in the other two periods(1901-1945 and 1968-2009).Analyses of the datasets indicate that the interdecadal variation is mainly associated with the change in ENSO amplitude.In contrast to the period of 1946-1967,a greater SST variance occurred in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific during 1901-1945 and 1968-2009.A stronger El Ni?o tends to generate more significant anticyclonic anomalies over the southeast Indian Ocean through teleconnection.The northwesterly anomalies to the south of the anticyclone weaken the southeast trade winds and warm the south Indian Ocean SST via wind-evaporation-SST feedback,and the positive south Indian Ocean SST anomalies trigger westward-propagating oceanic Rossby waves to induce stronger warming of the southwest Indian Ocean,leading to a significant asymmetric wind pattern across the equator in spring.The profound northeastward winds on the north side weaken the southwest monsoon,leading to a“second warming”over the north Indian Ocean in summer,which anchors the eastward-propagating warm Kelvin waves and results in a stronger NWPSA by inducing surface divergence and suppressing deep convection.

Effect of low-degree astigmatism on the objective visual quality

AIM:To evaluate the effect of low-degree astigmatism on objective visual quality through the Optical Quality Analysis System(OQAS).METHODS:This study enrolled 46 participants(aged 23 to 30y,90 eyes)with normal or corrected-to-normal vision.The cylindrical lenses(0,0.5,0.75,1.0,and 1.25 D)were placed at the axial direction(180°,45°,90°,and 135°)in front of the eyes with the best correction to form 16 types of regular low-degree astigmatism.OQAS was used to detect the objective visual quality,recorded as the objective scattering index(OSI),OQAS values at contrasts of 100%,20%,and 9%predictive visual acuity(OV100%,OV20%,and OV9%),modulation transfer function cut-off(MTFcut-off)and Strehl ratio(SR).The mixed effect linear model was used to compare objective visual quality differences between groups and examine associations between astigmatic magnitude and objective visual quality parameters.RESULTS:Apparent negative relationships between the magnitude of low astigmatism and objective visual quality were observed.The increase of OSI per degree of astigmatism at 180°,45°,90°,and 135°axis were 0.38(95%CI:0.35,0.42),0.50(95%CI:0.46,0.53),0.49(95%CI:0.45,0.54)and 0.37(95%CI:0.34,0.41),respectively.The decrease of MTFcut-off per degree of astigmatism at 180°,45°,90°,and 135°axis were-10.30(95%CI:-11.43,-9.16),-12.73(95%CI:-13.62,-11.86),-12.75(95%CI:-13.79,-11.70),and-9.97(95%CI:-10.92,-9.03),respectively.At the same astigmatism degree,OSI at 45°and 90°axis were higher than that at 0°and 135°axis,while MTFcut-off were lower.CONCLUSION:Low astigmatism of only 0.50 D can significantly reduce the objective visual quality.
