Autophagic cell death induced by reactive oxygen species is involved in hyperthermic sensitization to ionizing radiation in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells

AIM To investigate whether autophagic cell death is involved in hyperthermic sensitization to ionizing radiation in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and to explore the underlying *** Human hepatocellular carcinoma cells were treated with hyperthermia and ionizing radiation. MTT and clonogenic assays were performed to determine cell survival. Cell autophagy was detected using acridine orange staining and flow cytometric analysis, and the expression of autophagy-associated proteins, LC3 and p62, was determined by Western blot analysis. Intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) were quantified using the fluorescent probe *** Treatment with hyperthermia and ionizing radiation significantly decreased cell viability and surviving fraction as compared with hyperthermia or ionizing radiation alone. Cell autophagy was significantly increased after ionizing radiation combined with hyperthermia treatment, as evidenced by increased formation of acidic vesicular organelles, increased expression of LC3 II and decreased expression of p62. Intracellular ROS were also increased after combined treatment with hyperthermia and ionizing radiation. Pretreatment with N-acetylcysteine, an ROS scavenger, markedly inhibited the cytotoxicity and cell autophagy induced by hyperthermia and ionizing *** Autophagic cell death is involved in hyperthermic sensitization of cancer cells to ionizing radiation, and its induction may be due to the increased intracellular ROS.

Although there have been significant advances in the treatment of heart failure in recent years,chronic heart failure remains a leading cause of cardiovascular disease-related *** studies have found that targeted cardiac metabolic remodeling has good potential for the treatment of heart ***,most of the drugs that increase cardiac energy are still in the theoretical or testing *** research has found that botanical drugs not only increase myocardial energy metabolism through multiple targets but also have the potential to restore the balance of myocardial substrate *** this review,we summarized the mechanisms by which botanical drugs(the active ingredients/formulas/Chinese patent medicines)improve substrate utilization and promote myocardial energy metabolism by activating AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK),peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors(PPARs)and other related *** the same time,some potential protective effects of botanical drugs on myocardium,such as alleviating oxidative stress and dysbiosis signaling,caused by metabolic disorders,were briefly discussed.

Towards the universal defense for query-based audio adversarial attacks on speech recognition system

Recently,studies show that deep learning-based automatic speech recognition(ASR)systems are vulnerable to adversarial examples(AEs),which add a small amount of noise to the original audio *** AE attacks pose new challenges to deep learning security and have raised significant concerns about deploying ASR systems and *** existing defense methods are either limited in application or only defend on results,but not on *** this work,we propose a novel method to infer the adversary intent and discover audio adversarial examples based on the AEs generation *** insight of this method is based on the observation:many existing audio AE attacks utilize query-based methods,which means the adversary must send continuous and similar queries to target ASR models during the audio AE generation *** by this observation,We propose a memory mechanism by adopting audio fingerprint technology to analyze the similarity of the current query with a certain length of memory ***,we can identify when a sequence of queries appears to be suspectable to generate audio *** extensive evaluation on four state-of-the-art audio AE attacks,we demonstrate that on average our defense identify the adversary’s intent with over 90%*** careful regard for robustness evaluations,we also analyze our proposed defense and its strength to withstand two adaptive ***,our scheme is available out-of-the-box and directly compatible with any ensemble of ASR defense models to uncover audio AE attacks effectively without model retraining.

Paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O dosage effects on the strength and heat transfer characteristics of cemented tailings backfill

The challenge of high temperatures in deep mining remains harmful to the health of workers and their production efficiency The addition of phase change materials (PCMs) to filling slurry and the use of the cold storage function of these materials to reduce downhole temperatures is an effective approach to alleviate the aforementioned ***–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM was prepared in the *** composition,phase change latent heat,thermal conductivity,and cemented tailing backfill (CTB) compressive strength of the new material were *** heat transfer characteristics and endothermic effect of the PCM were simulated using Fluent *** results showed the following:(1) The new paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM improved the thermal conductivity of native paraffin while avoiding the water solubility of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O.(2) The calculation formula of the thermal conductivity of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O combined with paraffin was deduced,and the reasons were explained in principle.(3) The“enthalpy–mass scale model”was applied to calculate the phase change latent heat of nonreactive composite PCMs.(4)The addition of the paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM reduced the CTB strength but increased its heat absorption *** research can give a theoretical foundation for the use of heat storage backfill in green mines.

Analytic Formulae for Estimating Motor Proportion of Load Model Under Small Disturbance

In the composite load model(CLM),which is commonly used in China,an equivalent motor and equivalent static load are used to represent all electrical equipment and networks connected to a load *** research has determined typical values of electrical and mechanical parameters for load models of different load types,which improves the basis for load ***,the motor proportion parameter is not the same for different load buses or at different times;therefore,obtaining the actual motor proportion is key to establishing an accurate load *** the existing load modeling method,motor proportion is commonly identified along with other parameters under rare large disturbances;therefore,the value of the motor proportion is fixed by the time when a large disturbance *** this paper,formulae are derived to estimate motor proportion under small disturbances,and these formulae allow direct calculation of motor proportion without using any optimization *** proposed estimation formulae do not rely on any parameters of load model or power system but instead rely only on measurement of the voltage and active power at steady-state points before and after a small *** of universality of small disturbances in power systems,estimating time-varying motor proportion under small disturbances will be helpful for solving the time-varying problem of load ***,the proposed motor proportion estimation formulae are validated by simulations,physical experiments,and field experiments.

Boosted Lithium-Ion Transport Kinetics in n-Type Siloxene Anodes Enabled by Selective Nucleophilic Substitution of Phosphorus

Doped two-dimensional(2D)materials hold significant promise for advancing many technologies,such as microelectronics,optoelectronics,and energy ***,n-type 2D oxidized Si nanosheets,namely n-type siloxene(n-SX),are employed as Li-ion battery *** thermal evaporation of sodium hypophosphite at 275℃,P atoms are effectively incorporated into siloxene(SX)without compromising its 2D layered morphology and unique Kautsky-type crystal ***,selective nucleophilic substitution occurs,with only Si atoms being replaced by P atoms in the O_(3)≡Si-H *** resulting n-SX possesses two delocalized electrons arising from the presence of two electron donor types:(i)P atoms residing in Si sites and(ii)H *** doping concentrations are varied by controlling the amount of precursors or their mean free *** at 2000 mA g^(-1),the n-SX electrode with the optimized doping concentration(6.7×10^(19) atoms cm^(-3))delivers a capacity of 594 mAh g^(-1) with a 73%capacity retention after 500 *** improvements originate from the enhanced kinetics of charge transport processes,including electronic conduction,charge transfer,and solid-state *** approach proposed herein offers an unprecedented route for engineering SX anodes to boost Li-ion storage.

Limestone or quicklime is a necessary flux in the iron ore sintering *** production and application process will cause CO_(2) emissions and various environmental pollution,but this has not attracted enough *** slag(CS)is a calcium-rich solid waste produced in acetylene production,the harmless disposal of which is still incomplete,resulting in soil and groundwater *** study investigated the granulation characteristics and sintering performance of the sintering mixture with different proportions of *** results show that replacing limestone with an appropriate proportion of CS is promising and beneficial to the formation of high-quality bonding *** CS accounts for 75%of the total mass of CS and limestone,the tumbler index increases by 8.10%and the comprehensive index decreases only from 100 to 96.16,which is within the acceptable *** application of CS in iron ore sintering can achieve a clean disposal of it and a considerable carbon emission reduction,as the main component of which is Ca(OH)_(2).

Surface plasmon-coupled radiative heat transfer between graphene-covered magnetic Weyl semimetals

Weyl semimetals(WSMs) have recently attracted considerable research attention because of their remarkable optical and electrical properties. In this study, we investigate the near-field radiative heat transfer(NFRHT) between graphene-covered Weyl slabs, particularly focusing on the supported coupled surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs). Unlike bare Weyl slabs where the epsilon-near-zero(ENZ) effect contributes the most to the NFRHT, adding a monolayer graphene sheet yields coupled SPPs, i.e.,the coupling of graphene SPPs(GSPPs) and Weyl SPPs(WSPPs), which dominates the NFRHT. The graphene sheet greatly suppresses the ENZ effect by compressing the parallel wavevector, thereby enabling the heat transfer coefficient(HTC) to be significantly changed. Further, for the graphene-covered magnetic Weyl slab configuration, an increase in the number of Weyl nodes suppresses the SPP coupling and ENZ effect, thereby weakening the NFRHT with a regulation ratio of 4.4 whereas an increase in the Fermi level slightly influences the NFRHT. Several typical heterostructures are also proposed for comparison, and results show that a mono-cell structure has the largest total HTC. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of surface plasmon-coupled radiative heat transfer and enable opportunities in energy harvesting and thermal management at the nanoscale based on WSM-based systems.

Seismic response and correlation analysis of a pile-supported wharf to near-fault pulse-like ground motions

Earthquake investigations have shown that near-fault pulse-like(NF-P)ground motions have unique characteristics compared to near-fault non-pulse-like(NF-NP)and far-field(FF)ground *** is necessary to study the seismic response of pile-supported wharf(PSW)structures under NF-P ground *** this study,a three-dimensional finite element numerical model is created to simulate a *** imparting three types of ground motion,the engineering demand parameters(EDPs)of PSW under NF-P ground motions were analyzed and compared,in which EDPs are the maximum displacement and bending moment of the *** intensity measures(IMs)were selected to characterize the properties of ground *** correlation between IMs and EDPs was *** results show that the piles present larger displacement and bending moment under NF-P ground motions compared to NF-NP and FF ground *** of the IMs have a high correlation with EDPs under NF-P ground motions,and these IMs are more applicable to FF ground *** correlation coefficients between EDPs and IMs under three types of ground motion were obtained,which will provide a valuable reference for the seismic design of PSWs.

The edge-graphitized carbon nitride(C_(3)N_(4)-C g)was prepared by secondary pyrolysis to construct ZnO/C_(3)N_(4)-C g(ZCN)type-Ⅱheterojunction photocatalyst via a facile sonication dispersion method,which achieved∼7.04-fold and∼18.3-fold enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for refrac-tory micropollutant removal and simultaneous hydrogen(H_(2))evolution respectively compared to con-ventional ZnO/g-C_(3)N_(4)Step-scheme *** apparent quantum efficiency of the ZCN_(0.4)het-erojunction reaches 0.92%(λ=420 nm).Such excellent performance stems from that the edge-graphene moieties stitched onto the interface of heterojunction extend light absorption to the full visible spec-trum,meanwhile,the built-in electric field generated during Fermi level alignment accompanying fa-vorable band-bending structure provides an effective pathway for the rapid migration of photoinduced electrons via the edge graphene channel to improve interfacial charge separation ***,the midgap states introduced in ZCN heterojunction could temporarily retain photoexcited electrons to effectively inhibit the in situ carrier recombination for improved photocatalytic H_(2)***,ZCN/peroxymonosulfate system exhibited excellent anti-interference performance against complex water bodies under visible illumination due to the synergistic effect between the co-existing anions and organic ***,the eco-friendly nature of the ZCN/peroxymonosulfate system showed no biotoxicity of reaction filtrate on cell proliferation after treatment,which avoided secondary ***-ering the outstanding performance in photocatalysis,the ZCN system exhibits broad potential for practical applications in water pollution control and green energy production.
