Role of Arabidopsis RAP2.4 in Regulating Light-and Ethylene-Mediated Developmental Processes and Drought Stress Tolerance

Light and the plant hormone ethylene regulate many aspects of plant growth and development in an overlapping and interdependent fashion. Little is known regarding how their signal transduction pathways cross-talk to regulate plant development in a coordinated manner. Here, we report functional characterization of an AP2/DREB-type transcription factor, Arabidopsis RAP2.4, in mediating light and ethylene signaling. Expression of the RAP2.4 gene is down-regulated by light but up-regulated by salt and drought stresses. RAP2.4 protein is constitutively targeted to the nucleus and it can bind to both the ethylene-responsive GCC-box and the dehydration-responsive element （DRE）. We show that RAP2.4 protein possesses an intrinsic transcriptional activation activity in yeast cells and that it can activate a reporter gene driven by the DRE cis-element in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Overexpression of RAP2.4 or mutation in RAP2.4 cause altered expression of representative light-, ethylene-, and drought-responsive genes. Although no salient phenotype was observed with a rap2.4 loss-of-function mutant, constitutive overexpression of RAP2.4 results in defects in multiple developmental processes regulated by light and ethylene, including hypocotyl elongation and gravitropism, apical hook formation and cotyledon expansion, flowering time, root elongation, root hair formation, and drought tolerance. Based on these observations, we propose that RAP2.4 acts at or downstream of a converging point of light and ethylene signaling pathways to coordinately regulate multiple developmental processes and stress responses.

The simultaneous measurement of the spatial profile and spectrum of laser-accelerated protons is important for further optimization of the beam qualities and *** report a detailed study regarding the underlying physics and regular procedure of such a measurement through the radioactivation of a stack composed of aluminum,copper,and CR-39 plates as well as radiochromic films(RCFs).After being radioactivated,the copper plates are placed on imaging plates(IPs)to detect the positrons emitted by the reaction products through contact *** spectrum and energy-dependent spatial profile of the protons are then obtained from the IPs and confirmed by the measured ones from the RCFs and CR-39 *** also discuss the detection range,influence of electrons,radiation safety,and spatial resolution of this ***,insights regarding the extension of the current method to online measurements and dynamic proton imaging are also provided.

Reprogramming of cancer-associated fibroblasts by apoptotic cancer cells inhibits lung metastasis via Notch1-WISP-1 signaling

The interplay between apoptotic cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment modulates cancer progression and ***-associated fibroblasts(CAFs)play a crucial role in promoting these events through paracrine ***,we demonstrate that conditioned medium(CM)from lung CAFs exposed to apoptotic cancer cells suppresses TGF-β1-induced migration and invasion of cancer cells and *** exposure of CAFs to apoptotic 344SQ cells(ApoSQ)inhibited CAF migration and invasion and the expression of CAF activation *** secretion of Wnt‐induced signaling protein 1(WISP-1)by CAFs exposed to ApoSQ was required for these antimigratory and anti-invasive *** inhibition of Notch1 activation or siRNA-mediated Notch1 silencing prevented WISP-1 production by CAFs and reversed the antimigratory and anti-invasive *** expression of the Notch ligand delta-like protein 1 on the surface of ultraviolet-irradiated apoptotic lung cancer cells triggered Notch1-WISP-1 *** receptor brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor 1(BAI1)-Rac1 signaling,which facilitated efferocytosis by CAFs,participated in crosstalk with Notch1 signaling for optimal production of *** addition,a single injection of ApoSQ enhanced WISP-1 production,suppressed the expression of CAF activation markers in isolated Thy1^(+)CAFs,and inhibited lung metastasis in syngeneic immunocompetent mice via Notch1 *** with CM from CAFs exposed to ApoSQ suppressed tumor growth and lung metastasis,whereas treatment with WISP-1-immunodepleted CM from CAFs exposed to ApoSQ reversed the antitumorigenic and antimetastatic ***,treatment with CM from CAFs exposed to apoptotic lung cancer cells could be therapeutically applied to suppress CAF activation,thereby preventing cancer progression and metastasis.

Attaching single carbon nanotube on tip's apex using dielectrophoresis of DC-pulse voltage

Single carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are candidates for a number of electronics and sensing applications, provided that single CNTs can be separated from a bundle of CNTs in suspension. Dielectrophoresis has recently been demonstrated as one route for the extraction of desired CNTs. However, previous methods using dielectrophoresis have found it difficult to extract single nanotubes from bundles of CNTs in solution. Here, we show that this restriction can be overcome by using pulsed DC voltage of an electric field, instead of regular AC and DC voltages.

Racism,Equity,and Quality of Education for International Students in South Korean Higher Education Institutes

This study aims to understand equity issues of international students’learning in Korean higher education institutions by engaging with the issue of racism and identifies how international students in Korea reshape their learning trajectory and how we could provide equitable and quality education for international *** a qualitative case study design,six students from different background were interviewed to examine features of perceived institutional racism based on their learning experience in *** findings showed that internationalization has not been fulfilled in terms of engaging with international students although Korean government and higher education institutions have developed relevant policy to attract international *** study indicates that Korean universities need to reconstruct their social,cultural,and institutional systems to embrace equity,diversity and inclusiveness to empower international students’capacity.

Projections of ocean climate for northwestern Pacific Ocean

The long-term adjustment processes of atmosphere and ocean in response to gradually increased atmospheric CO2 concentration have been analyzed in 70 and 140 a integrations with NCAR fully-coupled climate system model (CSM). In these experiments the CO2 concentration has been increased to double and quadruples the initial concentration, respectively. After 70 a, at the time of CO2 doubling, the model predicts surface air temperature rises by 1.2 and 1.5 K for the globe and the northwestern Pacific Ocean, respectively. The behavior of the quadrupling run is similar: each global and regional mean surface air temperatures increase by 2.8 and 3.0 K at the time of CO2 quadrupling. From the experiments, surface air temperature changes in the northwestern Pacific Ocean will be more distinctive compared with the global average, mainly due to exceptionally large wanning and sea level change near the entrance of the Kuroshio extension.

Simulation of Suspended Sediment in the Yellow and East China Seas

Described is an initial attempt to simulate the suspended sediment dynamics relating to tidal and wave forcing during summertime in June 1980 and August 1981 for the Yellow and East China Seas continental shelf. The cohesive/non-cohesive sediment resuspension and movement generated by the interaction between current and wave are modeled by use of ECOMSED and WAM Cycle 4. Model results are compared with observations in US-China Marine Sedimentation Dynamics Program performed for 1980-81 at off the Changjiang estuary. The main features of simulations show that suspended sediment concentrations during the summer decreased markedly offshore as observed during the simulation periods. As for some discrepancies for the mouth of the estuary with high river discharges, i.e., the Changjiang River, the model did not properly reproduce the over-mixing situation in the summer; thus distinct vertical concentration variation in this local region is not agreeable with observation. However, general dispersal patterns of suspended sediment movement seem to be agreeably reproduced for the nearshore shallow region. Some of the procedures of simulation and results are presented and discussed.

Flowering represents a pivotal developmental transition from the vegetative stage to the reproductive stage. The timing of flower- ing must be carefully controlled under ever-changing environ- mental conditions to ensure successful reproduction. Extensive genetic and molecular biological analyses in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana have identified important regulators of flowering time and revealed a complex network of highly inter- connected pathways that are regulated by seasonal cues （e.g., light and temperature） and internal factors （e.g., age and nutrient availability）（Bouche et al., 2016）.

The earthquake is considered one of the most devastating disasters in any area of the world due to its potentially destructive *** on the various earthquake-related parameters,the risk assessment is enabled in advance to prevent future earthquake *** this paper,for providing the shelter space demands to reduce the damage level and prevention costs,an earthquake risk assessment approach is proposed for deriving the risk index based on multiple spatial parameters in the gridded *** proposed assessment approach is comprised of pre-processing,methodologymodel,and data *** risk index model derives the earthquake risk index by multiple spatial parameters including indexes of earthquake,danger,shelter,and building for blocks in the quantitative gridded *** parameters are provided based onmathematicalmodels and combinedwith the risk index that presents the earthquake risk assessment result for each ***,the gridding approach is proposed to provide the elements of the risk assessment area that are used in the spatial *** gridded map is developed for the selected area to visualize risk index parameters associated with each risk *** on the derived result of the proposed earthquake risk indexmodel,emergency shelter requirements are provided according to the risk index for each location,which supports safety measures in advance to prevent future earthquake disasters.
