La,Ce co-doped ZnO nanorods(ZnLC)were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal *** photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Raman spectroscopy,field-emission scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray,transmission electron microscopy,UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photo luminescence *** La and Ce doping enhanced the visible light absorption ability of ZnLC and a red shift was detected for *** simulated solar light irradiation,the ZnO doped with 3 at%La and 1 at%Ce(ZnLC1)degrades methylene blue(MB)more effectively than those of pure ZnO,La-doped ZnO(ZnL)and commercially available *** improved photocatalytic performance of ZnLC1 can be attributed to the high charge separation efficiency as demonstrated by the photoluminescence ***,the photocatalytic experiments reveal that several parameters have their own impact on the MB *** a variety of radical scavengers,it is discovered that superoxide anion radical plays a crucial role in the degradation of *** ZnLC1 is also reused several times without noticeable decrease of photoactivity,indicating that it has a substantial potential for environmental remediation applications.

In this big data era, the use of large dataset in conjunction with machine learning (ML) has been increasingly popular in both industry and academia. In recent times, the field of materials science is also undergoing a big data revolution, with large database and repositories appearing everywhere. Traditionally, materials science is a trial-and-error field, in both the computational and experimental departments. With the advent of machine learning-based techniques, there has been a paradigm shift: materials can now be screened quickly using ML models and even generated based on materials with similar properties;ML has also quietly infiltrated many sub-disciplinary under materials science. However, ML remains relatively new to the field and is expanding its wing quickly. There are a plethora of readily-available big data architectures and abundance of ML models and software;The call to integrate all these elements in a comprehensive research procedure is becoming an important direction of material science research. In this review, we attempt to provide an introduction and reference of ML to materials scientists, covering as much as possible the commonly used methods and applications, and discussing the future possibilities.

Harmonic Dark Pulse Emission in Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser

A harmonic dark pulse generation in an erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated based on a figure-of-eight configuration. It is found that the harmonic dark pulse can be shifted from the fundamental to the 5th order harmonic by increasing the pump power with an appropriate polarization controller orientation. The fundamental repetition rate of 2O kHz is obtained at the pump power of 29 m W. The highest pulse energy of 42.6 n3 is obtained at the fundamental repetition rate. The operating frequency of the dark pulse trains shifts to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th harmonic as the pump powers are increased to 34mW, 50mW, 59mW and 137mW, respectively.

Nonlinear Polarization Rotation-Based Mode-Locked Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser with Three Switchable Operation States

A simple mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser （EDFL） with three switchable operation states is proposed and demonstrated based on nonlinear polarization rotation. The EDFL generates a stable square pulse at a third harmonic pulse repetition rate of 87kHz as the 1480 nm pump power increases from the threshold of 17.5 m W to 34.3mW. The square pulse duration increases from 105 ns to 245ns as the pump power increases within this region. The pulse operation switches to the second operation state as the pump power is varied from 48.2mW to *** W. The laser operates at a fundamental repetition rate of 29 kHz with a fixed pulse width of 8.5 μs within the pump power region. At a pump power of ***, the average output power is 3.84mW, which corresponds to the pulse energy of 131.5 ng. When the pump power continues to increase, the pulse train experiences unstable oscillation before it reaches the third stable operation state within a pump power region of 138.9 m W to 145.0 m W. Within this region, the EDFL produces a fixed pulse width of 2.8 μs and a harmonic pulse repetition rate of 58 kHz.

Q-Switching Pulse Generation with Thulium-Doped Fiber Saturable Absorber

Q-switched pulsed laser systems operating in the eye-safe wavelength region （λ〉 1.4 μm） are promis- ing for applications such as light detection and ranging （lidar）, differential absorption lidar, optical communi- cation, sensor and instrumentations. Fiber lasers are particularly attractive for such applications due to the fact that the beam quality can be independent of output power and they can be robustly engineered. There is an increasing interest in Q-switched erbium- doped fiber lasers （EDFLs）, which can be generated by using either active or passive techniques. Com- pared with the actively Q-switched ones, passively Q- switched EDFLs have attracted much attention for their advantages of compactness, low cost, flexibility and simplicity of design. Different kinds of saturable absorbers, such as the transition metal-doped crys- tals and semiconductor quantum-well structures, have been applied to realize Q-switched ***- ever, when they are used in the laser cavity, additional alignment devices, such as lens, mirrors or U-bench units, have to be applied. This may increase the in- sertion loss and the complexity of the laser cavity.

Clinical characteristics of patients in their forties who underwent surgical resection for colorectal cancer in Korea

BACKGROUND The proportion of young patients with colorectal cancer(CRC),especially in their 40s,is increasing *** To confirm the clinical characteristics of such patients,we planned a study comparing them to patients in their 30s and *** Patients undergoing primary resection for CRC,patients in their 30s,40s and 50s were included in the *** and tumor characteristics,and perioperative and oncologic outcomes were *** Most clinical characteristics of 451(10.5%)patients in their 40s were more similar to those of patients in their 30s than those in their *** pathology data,there were more metastatic lesions(30s vs 40s vs 50s;17.5%vs 21.1%vs 14.9%,P=0.012)in patients in their *** was a trend toward less frequent K-ras mutations among patients in their 40s(48.5%vs 33.3%vs 44.5%,P=0.064).The proportion of patients receiving postoperative chemotherapy was also significantly greater among patients in their 40s(58.3%vs 63.9%vs 56.3%,P=0.032).Five-year overall survival(OS)and disease-free survival(DFS)did not differ between the three groups(5-year OS,92.2%vs 89.8%vs 92.2%,P=0.804;5-year total DFS,98.6%vs 95.7%vs 96.1%,P=0.754;5-year local DFS,98.6%vs 94.3%vs 94.9%,P=0.579;5-year systemic DFS,86.4%vs 87.9%vs 86.4%,P=0.908).CONCLUSION Patients with CRC in their 40s showed significantly more numerous metastatic *** oncologic outcome of stage 1-3 patients in their 40s was not inferior compared to that of those in their 30s and 50s.

Synergistic Enhancement of Electrocatalytic Activity toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Alkaline Electrolytes with Pentabasic （Fe, B, N, S, P）-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide

As alternatives to Pt-based electrocatalysts, the development of nonprecious metal catalysts with high performance in the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction （ORR） is highly desirable for widespread use in fuel cells. Here we report a simple approach for preparing pentabasic （Fe, B, N, S, P）-doped reduced graphene oxide （rGO） via a two-step doping method of adding boric acid and ferric chloride to ternary （N, S, P）-doped rGO （NSPG）. Electro- chemical investigation of the composites for the ORR revealed that simultaneously doping appropriate amounts of Fe and B into the NSPG produced a synergistic effect that endowed the prepared catalyst with both a positively shifted ORR half-wave potential and high selectivity for the 4e^-reduction of O2. The optimized Fe2B-NSPG catalyst approached a 4e^- process for the ORR with a half-wave potential （E1/2=0.90 V vs. RHE） even 30 mV higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline solution. Furthermore, relative to the Pt/C catalyst, the Fe2B-NSPG demonstrated superior stability and excellent tolerance of the methanol cross-over effect. This simple method afforded pentabasic （Fe, B, N, S, P）-doped rGO as a promising nonpreeious metal catalyst used for alkaline fuel cells.

We study the Fredholm integro-differential equationby the wavelet method. Here (x) is the unknown function to be found, k(y) isa convolution kernel and g(x) is a given function. Following the idea in [7], theequation is discretized with respect to two different wavelet bases. We then havetwo different linear systems. One of them is a Toeplitz-Hankel system of the form(Hn + Tn)x = b where Tn is a Toeplitz matrix and Hn is a Hankel matrix. Theother one is a system (Bn+ Cn)y= d with condition number K = O(1) after adiagonal scaling. By using the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) methodwith the fast wavelet transform (FWT) and the fast iterative Toeplitz solver, wecan solve the systems in O(nlog n) operations.

New insights in the pathogenesis of alcohol-related liver disease:The metabolic,immunologic,and neurologic pathways

Alcohol-related liver disease(ALD)became an important health issue *** chronic alcohol consumption,the development of ALD might be caused by metabolic and immunologic factors,such as reactive oxygen species(ROS)and pro-inflammatory *** example,hepatic cytochrome P4502E1 enzyme increases ROS production and stimulates de novo lipogenesis after alcohol *** addition,damage-and pathogen-associated molecular patterns stimulate their specific receptors in nonparenchymal cells,including Kupffer cells,hepatic stellate cells(HSCs),and lymphocytes,which result in hepatocyte death and infiltration of pro-inflammatory cells(e.g.,neutrophils and macrophages)in the ***,our studies have suggested the novel involvement of neurologic signaling pathways(e.g.,endocannabinoid and glutamate)through the metabolic synapse between hepatocytes and HSCs in the development of alcohol-related hepatic ***,agouti-related protein and beta2-adrenergic receptors aggravate hepatic ***,organ-crosstalk has emerged as a critical issue in *** alcohol consumption induces dysbiosis and barrier disruption in the gut,leading to endotoxin leakage into the portal circulation,or lipolysis-mediated transport of triglycerides from the adipose tissue to the *** summary,this review addresses multiple pathogeneses of ALD,provides novel neurologic signaling pathways,and emphasizes the importance of organ-crosstalk in the development of ALD.
