Mitochondria have long been considered to be the powerhouse of the living cell, generating energy in the form of the molecule ATP via the process of oxidative phosphorylation. In the past 20 years, it has been recognised that they also play an important role in the implementation of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. More recently it has become evident that mitochondria also participate in the orchestration of cellular defence responses.At physiological concentrations, the gaseous molecule nitric oxide (NO) inhibits the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) in competition with oxygen. This interaction underlies the mitochondrial actions of NO, which range from the physiologi- cal regulation of cell respiration, through mitochondrial signalling, to the development of “metabolic hypoxia” – a situation in which, although oxygen is available, the cell is unable to utilise it.

Objectives:To evaluate hearing outcome of salvage treatment with intratympanic steroids(ITS)in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSNHL)refractory to initial systemic steroid(SS)therapy.Material and methods:A retrospective medical chart review was conducted on 54 consecutive patients with ISSNHL refractory to SS.Salvage treatment with a low dose intratympanic dexamethasone(4 mg/ml)was offered after one week of primary treatment.Patients were divided into two groups:25 patients accepted ITS(treatment group)and 29 patients did not undergo additional treatment(control group).A pure tone average(PTA)gain of at least 10 dB was considered hearing improvement.Results:Hearing improvement rate was higher in ITS group compared to control group(40%vs.13.8%,p=0.035).A mean PTA improvement of 8.6±9.8 dB was observed in the ITS group and,whereas the control group had an average hearing gain of 0.7±2 dB(p<0.001).Audiometric analysis revealed a significant hearing gain in ITS group at all tested frequencies compared to control group(p<0.05).Analysis of the selected variables,identified intratympanic steroid treatment as the only independent prognostic factor for hearing improvement(OR=4.2,95%CI:1.1e15.7;p=0.04).Conclusion:Intratympanic low dose dexamethasone is effective in patients with incomplete hearing recovery after primary systemic steroid treatment.

As a consequence of competition in electricity markets,a wide variety of financial derivatives have emerged to allow market agents to hedge against risks.Electricity options and forward contracts constitute adequate instruments to manage the financial risks pertaining to price volatility or unexpected unit failures faced by power producers.A multi-stage stochastic model is described in this tutorial paper to determine the optimal forward and option contracting decisions for a risk-averse power producer.The key features of electricity options to reduce both price and availability risks are illustrated by using two examples.

OBJECTIVE:The incidence of hip fractures is increasing within the aging population. Our objective was to identify and quantify the risk factors and develop a predictive model for the in-hospital mortality among hip fracture patients older than 65 years.;METHODS:This is a prospective study conducted on 331 hip fracture patients older than 65 years admitted to our hospital from 2011 to 2014. Patients' demographics, prehospitalization residential status, prefracture comorbidity data, anti-aggregant and anticoagulant medication, preoperative hemoglobin value, type of fractures, type of treatments, time to surgery, and complications were recorded.;RESULTS:The average age was 83 years, 73% female, and 57% of them sustained a femoral neck fracture. In 62.8% of patients, the number of pre-fracture baseline comorbidities was ≥2. The in-hospital mortality rate was 11.4%. In multivariate analysis, age over 90 years, congestive heart failure, asthma, rheumatologic disease, lung cancer, and not taking antiaggregant medication were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. A formula and risk stratification scoring for predicting the risk for in-hospital mortality was developed. Risk-adjustment model based on these variables had acceptable accuracy for predicting in-hospital mortality (c-statistic 0.77).;CONCLUSIONS:Advanced age, and five prefracture comorbidities have a strong association with in-hospital mortality in a hip fracture patient older than 65 years old. Our predictive model was specifically designed for the old hip fracture population. It has an accuracy similar to other risk models. The specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value are high. In addition, it could discriminate a high risk patient from a low risk patient for in-hospital mortality.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder belonging to a group of human pathologies known as synucleinopathies,which includes multiple system atrophy or dementia with Lewy bodies (Spillantini et al.,1998).These diseases share a common neuropathological feature,the presence ofα-synuclein (α-Syn) deposits,although they differ in the cellular and anatomical compartment in whichα-Syn inclusions accumulate.PD affects more than 1% of people over 60 years of age,thus being the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the world and the most common synucleinopathy.

Nitric oxide(NO)and hydrogen sulfide(HS)are two molecules that share signaling properties in plant and animal cells NO and H2S originate two farmilies of de rived mol ecules designated reactive nitrogen and sulfur species(RNS and RSS,respectively).These molecules are responsible for certain protein regulatory processes through posttranslational modifications(PTMs),being the most remarkable S nitrosation and persufidation,which afect the thiol group of cysteine residues.NO and H2S can also exert regulatory functions due to their interaction through the iron present in proteins that contain heme groups or iron-sulfur dlusters,as reported mainly in animal cells.Howewer,the available information in plant cells is still very limited thus far.In higher plants,NO and H2S are involved in a myriad of physiological events from seed germination to fruit ripening,but also the mec hanism of response to biotic and abiotic stress conditions.This vie wpoint manuscript highlights the functional regulatory parllelism of these two molecules which also interact with the metabolism of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in plant cells.

Enhanced catalytic degradation of organic pollutants by multi-stimuli activated multiferroic nanoarchitectures

Smart catalysts that can simultaneously utilize multiple energy sources will have a significant positive impact on the inefficiencies of conventional environmental remediation approaches,and will address their high energy demands.In this work,we have manufactured multiferroic magnetoelectric photocatalysts that can be simultaneously activated using multiple energy sources for the degradation of organic pollutants.The catalysts are composed of CoFe2O4@BiFeO3(CFO@BFO)nanooctahedrons(NOs),CFO@BFO nanocubes(NCs),and CFO@BFO nanowires(NWs),and were successful in harnessing energy from three different energy sources,including UV-vis light,acoustically mediated mechanical vibrations and magnetic fields.The CFO@BFO NOs displayed the most enhanced degradation,reaching 93%,96%,and 99%degradation of RhB dye within 1 h under light,ultrasound,and magnetic fields,respectively.When these energy sources were used simultaneously,significantly increased reaction rates were observed compared to the single-energy source stimulation.Results of radical trapping experiments indicate that radical species i.e.,OH·and O2·^-play a dominant role in catalytic degradation of organic pollutant,RhB,under all three stimuli.These results will contribute significantly to the development of new environmental technologies that are highly versatile in nature and able to adapt to changing environments to deliver efficient environmental remediation.

We demonstrate that a scotogenic dark symmetry can be obtained as a residual subgroup of the global U(1)B−L symmetry already present in the Standard Model.In addition,we propose a general framework in which the U(1)B−L symmetry is spontaneously broken into an even Z2n subgroup,setting the general conditions for neutrinos to be Majorana and for dark matter stability to exist in terms of the residual Z2n.As an example,under this general framework,we build a class of simple models where,in a scotogenic manner,the dark matter candidate is the lightest particle running inside the mass loop of a neutrino.The global U(1)B−L symmetry in our framework,being anomaly free,can also be gauged in a straightforward manner leading to a richer phenomenology.

The purpose of this paper is to present a quantitative SNR analysis of quadratic frequency modulated(QFM) signals. This analysis is located in the continuous-time local polynomial Fourier transform(LPFT) domain using a Gaussian window function based on the definition of 3 dB signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).First, the maximum value of the local polynomial periodogram(LPP), and the 3 dB bandwidth in the LPFT domain for a QFM signal is derived, respectively. Then, based on these results, the 3 dB SNR of a QFM signal with Gaussian window function is given in the LPFT domain with one novel idea highlighted: the relationship among standard SNR, parameters of QFM signals and Gaussian window function is clear, and the potential application is demonstrated in the parameter estimation of a QFM signal using the LPFT.Moreover, the 3 dB SNR in the LPFT domain is compared with that in the linear canonical transform(LCT) domain. The validity of theoretical derivations is confirmed via simulation results. It is shown that,in terms of SNR, QFM signals in the LPFT domain can achieve a significantly better performance than those in the LCT domain.

Dear Editor,Persistent hematuria could trigger urinary retention,leading the patient to the emergency department for abdominal pain,decreased urinary output,anemia,and azotemia[1,2].Conventional bladder clot evacuation requires a three-way catheter with continuous irrigation and aspiration with a syringe or Ellik evacuator[3].Sometimes a large and well-organized hematoma requires an open cystostomy[1,4].We want to introduce a combined method using hydrogen peroxide as well as suction technique with an endotracheal catheter to evacuate intravesical clots.
