TiO2.thin films were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering with the oxygen flow rate higher than the threshold. The film deposited for 5 h was of anatase phase with a preferred orientation along the 2.0> direction, but the films deposited for 2.and 3 h were amorphous. The transmittance and photocatalytic activity of the TiO2.films increased constantly with increasing film thickness. When the annealing temperature was lower than 700℃, only anatase grew in the TiO2.film. TiO2.phase changed from anatase to rutile when the annealing temperature was above 800℃. The photocatalytic activity decreased with increasing annealing temperature.

The stochastic cracking and healing behaviors of reaction-diffusion growth of thin filmswere studied by means of Markov processes analysis. We chose the thermal growth ofoxide scales on metals as an example of reaction-diffusion growth. The thermal growthof oxide films follows power law when no cracking occurs. Our results showed that thegrowth kinetics under stochastic cracking and healing conditions was different fromthat without cracking. It might be altered to either pseudo-linear or pseudo-power lawsdependent upon the intensity and frequency of the cracking of the films. When thehoping items dominated, the growth followed pseudo-linear law; when the diffusionalitems dominated, it followed pseudo-power law with the exponentials lower than theintrinsical values. The numerical results were in good agreement with the meassuredkinetics of isothermal and cyclic oxidation of NiAl-0.1 Y (at. %) alloys in air at 12.3K.

Mysterious Waters at metal Surfaces

The most common metallic coatings used in today's gas turbine engines are MCrAlX (where M is Ni and/or Co and X is one or more reactive elements such as Y, Hf, etc.) type overlay coatings. However, overlay coating techniques (plasma and flame spraying or physical vapor deposition) are line-of-site processes, and so, it is possible not to deposit coating on some surface of the complex turbine components. The diffusion aluminide coatings can solve this problem. A NiCoCrAlY and diffusion aluminide coating were prepared on K38G cast alloy by multi-arc ion plating and low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LP-CVD) techniques, respectively. The isothermal oxidation behavior of K38G and the coatings was studied in air at 900 and 1000℃. Their hot corrosion behaviors in the presence of 75 wt.% Na2.O4+K2.O4 and 75wt.%Na2.O4+NaCl film at 900℃ were studied. The results showed that the two kinds coatings exhibited low oxidation rate at 900 and 1000℃ and the presence of salt accelerated the oxidation rate. The NiCoCrAlY coating showed the better hot corrosion resistance than the aluminide coating.

The sputtered nanocrystalline coating of K38G alloy was obtained by magnetron sput-tering. The hot corrosion behaviors of cast K38G alloy and its sputtered nanocrys-talline coating by pre-deposited 75wt%Na2.O4+2.wt%K2.O4 at 900℃ were studied. The results indicated the occurrence of internal sulfidation in the cast K38G alloy with pre-deposited sulfattes of 0.8 and 3.0mg/cm2. However, the internal sulfidation was not observed in the coating with pre-deposited 0.8mg/cm2.sulfate. The hot corrosion resistance of K38G alloy was clearly enhanced through nanocrystallinzation, although the internal sulfides were still formed for the coating with sulfate deposit of 3mg/cm2. The relevant hot corrosion mechanism was also discussed.
