Surface modification of polyolefin separators for lithium ion batteries to reduce thermal shrinkage without thickness increase

Surface chemical modification of polyolefin separators for lithium ion batteries is attempted to reduce the thermal shrinkage, which is im- portant for the battery energy density. In this study, we grafted organic/inorganic hybrid crosslinked networks on the separators, simply by grafting polymerization and condensation reaction. The considerable silicon-oxygen crosslinked heat-resistance networks are responsible for the reduced thermal shrinkage. The strong chemical bonds between networks and separators promise enough mechanical support even at high temperature. The shrinkage at 150 ℃ for 30 min in the mechanical direction was 38.6% and 4.6% for the pristine and present graft-modified separators, respectively. Meanwhile, the grafting organic-inorganic hybrid crosslink networks mainly occupied part of void in the internal pores of the separators, so the thicknesses of the graft-modified separators were similar with the pristine one. The half cells prepared with the modified separators exhibited almost identical electrochemical properties to those with the commercial separators, thus proving that, in order to enhance the thermal stability of lithium ion battery, this kind of grafting-modified separators may be a better alternative to conventional silica nanoparticle layers-coated polyolefin separators.

Bench-scale gamma irradiation was conducted to investigate the influencing factors, such as initial cyanide concentration, absorbed dose, saturated gases, and pH value as well as water compositions on the γ radiolysis of cyanide in simulated aqueous solution. The decomposition rate of cyanide was observed as pseudo-first-order kinetic over the applied concentrations varied from 77 mg/L to 247 mg/L. Cyanide was decomposed more rapidly at a lower initial concentration than that at a higher initial concentration. However, the radical scavengers in natural waters, such as carbonate and bicarbonate, have negative effects on the remove of cyanide. This indicated that hydroxyl radical may play predominant role in the γ radiolysis of aqueous cyanide. Finally, ammonia and cyanate were identified as the main nitrogen-containing byproduct of γ radiolysis of cyanide. To remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from carbon fiber industry waste gases, a pilot-scale experiment with a self-sheltered electron beam accelerator was demonstrated after two sprays of chemical absorption. The operating conditions for absorption and irradiation had been optimized. It was shown that after the first spray tower, HCN concentration decreased from (240±50) mg/m3 to 35 ± 15 mg/m3. While after the second spray tower, effluent HCN was reduced almost below the method detection limit. Then, the residual cyanide in aqueous solution was exposured to high energy electron beam (EB). Influent CN- concentration was controled at (15±2) mg/L with a water regulating tank. This treatment allows CN- to reach the regional limit (of 0.5 mg/L) for safe industrial wastewater discharge with a irradiation dose of 12 kGy. The obtained results showed that the combined process were effective for removing HCN from the waste gas. © 2013, Science Press. All rights reserved.

In this study, the solubility of m-phenylenediamine in four pure solvents(methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile and water) and three binary solvent(methanol + water),(ethanol + water) and(acetonitrile + water) systems were determined in the temperature ranging from 278.15 K to 313.15 K by using the gravimetric method under atmospheric pressure. In the temperature range of 278.15 K to 313.15 K, the mole fraction solubility values of m-phenylenediamine in water, methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile are 0.0093–0.1533, 0.1668–0.5589,0.1072–0.5356, and 0.1717–0.6438, respectively. At constant temperature and solvent composition, the mole fraction solubility of o-phenylenediamine in four pure solvents was increased as the following order:water b ethanol b methanol b acetonitrile;and in the three binary solvent mixtures could be ranked as follows:(ethanol + water) b(methanol + water) b(acetonitrile + water). The relationship between the experimental temperature and the solubility of m-phenylenediamine was revealed as follows: the solubility of mphenylenediamine in pure and binary solvents could be increased with the increase of temperature. The experimental values were correlated with the Jouyban–Acree model, van’t Hoff–Jouyban–Acree model, modified Apelblat–Jouyban–Acree model, Sun model and Ma model. The standard dissolution enthalpy, standard dissolution entropy and the Gibbs energy were calculated based on the experimental solubility data. In the binary solvent mixtures, the dissolution of m-phenylenediamine could be an endothermic process. The solubility data,correlation equations and thermodynamic property obtained from this study would be invoked as basic data and models regarding the purification and crystallization process of m-phenylenediamine.

It is of vital significance to investigate mass transfer enhancements for chemical engineering *** work focuses on investigating the coupling influence of embedding wire mesh and adding solid particles on bubble motion and gas-liquid mass transfer process in a bubble *** image velocimetry(PIV)technology was employed to analyze the flow field and bubble motion behavior,and dynamic oxygen absorption technology was used to measure the gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient(kLa).The effect of embedding wire mesh,adding solid particles,and wire mesh coupling solid particles on the flow characteristic and kLa were analyzed and *** results show that the gas-liquid interface area increases by 33%-72%when using the wire mesh coupling solid particles strategy compared to the gas-liquid two-phase flow,which is superior to the other two strengthening *** with the system without reinforcement,kLa in the bubble column increased by 0.5-1.8 times with wire mesh coupling solid particles method,which is higher than the sum of kLa increases with inserting wire mesh and adding particles,and the coupling reinforcement mechanism for affecting gas-liquid mass transfer process was discussed to provide a new idea for enhancing gas-liquid mass transfer.

Remaining largely under-appreciated, a majority of metal ion sorbents are limited in their target selectivity. In this work, a 3D sulfide intercalated NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NFL-S) hierarchical sorbent has been synthesized for selective heavy metal removal. The intercalation of sulfurated groups in the interlayer of the layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets endows NFL-S as a selective heavy metal ion filter;the selectivity of NFL-S for heavy metals is in the order of Pb^2+> Cu^2+≥ Zn^2+> Cd^2+> Mn^2+, and NFL-S has high kd values for Pb2+(~10^6 mL/g) and Cu2+(~10^5 mL/g). Scanning electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the composition of the as-prepared nanoadsorbent. The selective adsorption behavior was systematically studied using batch experiments, and the performance was evaluated through kinetic and isotherm studies. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism of heavy metals by NFL-S through surface complexation was also investigated, which shows great potential for water decontamination.

Adsorption characteristics of a novel ceramsite for heavy metal removal from stormwater runoff

Urban sediments have rapidly increased in recent years around the world,and their effective management has become an important *** remove heavy metals from stormwater runoff and use sediments as a resource,a novel ceramsite was developed using sewer pipe sediments(SPS),river bed sediments(RBS),urban water supply treatment sludge(WSTS),and wastewater treatment plant excess sludge(WWTS).The optimal composition was determined based on the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area and an orthogonal test *** adsorption characteristics of the novel ceramsite for dissolved heavy metals(Cu^(2+)and Cd^(2+)) were investigated through adsorption isotherms and kinetic experiments at(25±1)℃.Both Cu^(2+) and Cd^(2+) were effectively removed by the novel ceramsite,and their equilibrium adsorption was 4.96 mg·g^(-1) and 3.84 mg·g^(-1),*** isotherms and a pseudo-first-order kinetic equation described the adsorption process better than other *** analysis of the ceramsite composition before and after heavy metal adsorption showed that the Cu^(2+) and Cd^(2+) contents in the ceramsite increased after *** results revealed that adsorption is both a physical and chemical process,and that ceramsite can be used as a bioretention medium to remove heavy metals from stormwater runoff while simultaneously converting problematic urban sediments into a resource.

Li-S batteries are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation battery systems with high energy density and low ***,the dissolution-precipitation reaction mechanism of the sulfur(S)cathode enhances the kinetics of the redox processes of the insulating sulfu r,which also arouses the notorious shuttle effect,leading to serious loss of S species and corrosion of Li *** get a balance between the shuttle restraining and the kinetic property,a combined strategy of electrolyte regulation and cathode modification is proposed via introducing 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoroprpyl ether(HFE)instead of 1,2-dimethoxyethane(DME),and SeS_(7)instead of S_*** introduction of HFE tunes the solvation structure of the LiTFSI and the dissolution of intermediate polysulfides with Se doping(LiPSSes),and optimize the interface stability of the Li anode *** minor Se substitution compensates the decrease in kinetic due to the decreased solubility of *** this way,the Li-SeS_(7)batteries deliver a reversible capacity of 1062 and 1037 mAh g^(-1)with 2.0 and 5.5 mg SeS_(7)cm^(-2)loading condition,***,an electrolyte-electrode loading model is established to explain the relationship between the optimal electrolyte and cathode *** makes more sense to guide the electrolyte design for practical Li-S batteries.
