Nanodiamond/Ti3C2 MXene-coated quartz crystal microbalance humidity sensor with high sensitivity and high quality factor

To address the challenge of achieving both high sensitivity and a high quality factor in quartz crystal microbalance（QCM） humidity sensors,a nanodiamond（ND）/Ti3C2MXene composite-coated QCM humidity sensor was fabricated.The material characteristics of ND,Ti3C2MXene,and ND/Ti3C2MXene composite were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy（TEM） and Fourier transform infrared（FTIR） spectroscopy.The experimental results demonstrated that the hydrophilic ND nanoparticles coated on Ti3C2MXene nanosheet prevented the self-stacking of Ti3C2MXene and enhanced the sensitivity of Ti3C2MXene-based QCM humidity sensor.Moreover,the high mechanical modulus of Ti3C2MXene material helped ND/Ti3C2MXene composite-coated QCM humidity sensor to achieve a high quality factor（> 20,000）.ND/Ti3C2MXene compositecoated QCM humidity sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 82.45 Hz/%RH,a humidity hysteresis of 1.1 %RH,fast response/recovery times,acceptable repeatability,and good stability from 11.3%RH to 97.3%RH.The response mechanism of ND/Ti3C2MXene composite-coated QCM humidity sensor was analyzed in combination with a bi-exponential kinetic adsorption model.Finally,the potential application of ND/Ti3C2MXene composite-coated QCM humidity sensor was demonstrated through its frequency response to wooden blocks with different moisture contents.

Indications of pro-inflammatory cytokines in laparoscopic and open liver resection for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma

Background:Our clinical practice of laparoscopic liver resection(LLR)had achieved better short-term and long-term benefits for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)over open liver resection(OLR),but the underlying mechanisms are not clear.This study was to find out whether systemic inflammation plays an important role.Methods:A total of 103 patients with early-stage HCC under liver resection were enrolled(LLR group,n=53;OLR group,n=50).The expression of 9 inflammatory cytokines in patients at preoperation,postoperative day 1(POD1)and POD7 was quantified by Luminex Multiplex assay.The relationships of the cytokines and the postoperative outcomes were compared between LLR and OLR.Results:Seven of the circulating cytokines were found to be significantly upregulated on POD1 after LLR or OLR compared to their preoperative levels.Compared to OLR,the POD1 levels of granulocytemacrophage colony-stimulating factor(GM-CSF),interleukin-6(IL-6),IL-8,and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1)in the LLR group were significantly lower.Higher POD1 levels of these cytokines were significantly correlated with longer operative time and higher volume of blood loss during operation.The levels of these cytokines were positively associated with postoperative liver injury,and the length of hospital stay.Importantly,a high level of IL-6 at POD1 was a risk factor for HCC recurrence and poor disease-free survival after liver resection.Conclusions:Significantly lower level of GM-CSF,IL-6,IL-8,and MCP-1 after liver resection represented a milder systemic inflammation which might be an important mechanism to offer better short-term and long-term outcomes in LLR over OLR.

The Brillouin scattering is one of the strongest nonlinear optical effects in dielectrics[1].In particular,the backward Brillouin scattering(BBS)provides an efficient method to achieve low-noise optical gain for active photonics[2]and the coherent interconnects between 10 GHz phonons and photons[3].However,previous studies on BBS are primarily limited to the unconfined phonons[1]or phonon confined in suspended structures[4-6].

We report the confirmation of a sub-Saturn-size exoplanet,TOI-1194 b,with a mass of about 0.456+0.055-0.051M_(J),and a very low mass companion star with a mass of about 96.5±1.5 MJ,TOI-1251 *** candidates provided by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS)are suitable for further follow-up observations by ground-based telescopes with small and medium apertures.The analysis is performed based on data from several telescopes worldwide,including telescopes in the Sino-German multiband photometric campaign,which aimed at confirming TESS Objects of Interest(TOIs)using ground-based small-aperture and medium-aperture telescopes,especially for long-period targets.TOI-1194 b is confirmed based on the consistent periodic transit depths from the multiband photometric data.We measure an orbital period of 2.310644±0.000001 days,the radius is 0.767+0.045-0.041RJ and the amplitude of the RV curve is 69.4_(-7.3)^(+7.9)m s^(-1).TOI-1251 B is confirmed based on the multiband photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic data,whose orbital period is 5.963054+0.000002-0.000001days,radius is 0.947+0.035-0.033 R_(J) and amplitude of the RV curve is 9849_(-40)^(+42)ms^(-1).

The interaction effect of grip strength and lung function (especially FVC) on cardiovascular diseases: a prospective cohort study in jiangsu Province, China

OBJECTIVE Lung function and grip strength(GS)are associated with cardiovascular disease(CVD),but whether these risk factors interact to affect CVD is unknown.This study aimed to explore the interactions between lung function and GS with major CVD(defined as fatal/non-fatal myocardial infarction,stroke,and heart failure)incidence.METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study on the Chinese population in jiangsu Province.Cox proportional haz-ards models were used to explore the associations between GS,lung function,and major CVD incidence.RESULTS A total of 5967 participants were included in our study;among them,182 participants developed major CVD.Parti-cipants with low forced vital capacity(FVC)had a higher risk of major CVD(hazard ratio(HR)=1.45;95%confidence interval(CI):1.05-2.01;P<0.05)compared with normal FVC.The risk of major CVD incidence(HR=0.54;95%CI:0.35-0.83;P<0.01)was significantly lower in participants with high GS than in individuals with low GS.The interaction between FVC and GS for major CVD incidence(P=0.006)was statistically significant.Compared with normal FVC participants with high GS,low FVC parti-cipants with low GS had the highest risk of major CVD incidence(HR=2.50;95%CI:1.43-4.36;P<0.01).CONCLUSION Among people with low FVC,the risk of major CVD is lower with high GS.Participants with low FVC and low GS have the highest risk of major CVD.Therefore,more attention should be paid to the incidence of major CVD in individu-als with low FVC,especially those who have lower GS.

Numerical studies on issues of Re-independence for indoor airflow and pollutant dispersion within an isolated building

This study conducted the numerical models validated by wind-tunnel experiments to investigate the issues of Re-independence of indoor airflow and pollutant dispersion within an isolated building.The window Reynolds number(Re_(w))was specified to characterize the indoor flow and dispersion.The indicators of RRC(ratio of relative change)or DR(K_DR)(difference ratio of dimensionless concentration)<5%were applied to quantitatively determine the critical Rew for indoor flow and turbulent diffusion.The results show that the critical Re(Re_(crit)) value is position-dependent,and Re_(crit) at the most unfavorable position should be suggested as the optimal value within the whole areas of interest.Thus Re(H,orit)=27,000 is recommended for the outdoor flows;while Re_(w,crit)=15,000 is determined for the indoor flows due to the lower part below the window showing the most unfavorable.The suggested Re_(w,crit)(=15,000)for indoor airflow and cross ventilation is independence of the window size.Moreover,taking K_DR≤5% as the indicator,the suggested Re_(w,crit) for ensuring indoor pollutant diffusion enter the independence regime should also be 15,000,indicating that indoor passive diffusion is completely determined by the flow structures.The contours of dimensionless velocity(U/U_(0))and concentration(K)against the increasing Re(w) further confirmed this critical value.This study further reveals the Re-independence issues for indoor flow and dispersion to ensure the reliability of the data obtained by reduced-scale numerical or wind-tunnel models.

Intraoperative fluorescence-based tumor imaging plays a crucial role in performing the oncological safe tumor resection with the advantage of differentiating tumor from normal tissues.However,the application of these fluorescence contrast agents in renal cell carcinoma(RCC)and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)was dramatically hammered as a result of lacking active targeting and poor retention time in tumor,which limited the Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR)and narrowed the imaging window for complicated surgery.Herein,we reported an activated excretion-retarded tumor imaging(AERTI)strategy,which could be in situ activated with MMP-2 and self-assembled on the surface of tumor cells,thereby resulting in a promoted excretion-retarded effect with an extended tumor retention time and enhanced SNR.Briefly,the AERTI strategy could selectively recognize the Integrin α_(v)β_(3).Afterwards,the AERTI strategy would be activated and in situ assembled into nanofibrillar structure after specifically cleaved by MMP-2 upregulated in a variety of human tumors.We demonstrated that the AERTI strategy was successfully accumulated at the tumor sites in the 786-O and HepG2 xenograft models.More importantly,the modified modular design strategy obviously enhanced the SNR of AERTI strategy in the imaging of orthotopic RCC and HCC.Taken together,the results presented here undoubtedly confirmed the design and advantage of this AERTI strategy for the imaging of tumors in metabolic organs.

Surgical resection of intradural extramedullary tumors in the atlantoaxial spine via a posterior approach

BACKGROUND The anatomical features of the atlantoaxial spine increase the difficulty of complete and safe removal of atlantoaxial intradural extramedullary(IDEM)tumors.Studies concerning surgical interventions via a posterior approach are limited.AIM To investigate the safety and efficacy of atlantoaxial IDEM tumor resection using a one-stage posterior approach.METHODS We retrospectively analyzed clinical databases for one-stage atlantoaxial IDEM tumor resection via a posterior approach between January 2008 and January 2018.The analyzed data included tumor position,histopathological type,pre-and postoperative Japanese Orthopedic Association(JOA)scores and Nurick grades,postoperative complication and recurrence status.RESULTS A total of 13 patients who underwent C1-C2 Laminectomy and/or unilateral facetectomy via the posterior approach were enrolled in the study.In all cases reviewed,total tumor resection and concomitant C1-C2 fusion were achieved.The average follow-up was 35.3±6.9 mo(range,26-49 mo).A statistically significant difference was noted between the preoperative JOA score(11.2±1.1)and the score at the last final follow-up(15.6±1.0)(P0.05).No mortalities,severe complications or tumor recurrence were observed during the follow-up period.CONCLUSION Total resection of atlantoaxial IDEM tumors is feasible and effective via a posterior approach.Surgical reconstruction should be considered to avoid iatrogenic kyphosis and improve spinal stability and overall clinical outcomes.

Study of the reinforced mechanism of fly ash on amphiphilic polymer gel

Amphiphilic polymer gels are widely used in heterogeneous reservoirs for conformance control technology.However,in high temperature and high salinity of calcium and magnesium reservoirs,amphiphilic polymer gels cannot maintain effective performance.In this work,a novel reinforced amphiphilic polymer gel(F-PADC gel)was prepared by physically mixing polymer solution and fly ash(FA),which is an extremely low cost material.The viscoelasticity and stability of the F-PADC gel were studied by rheometry and micro-rheometry.The reinforced mechanism of FA on amphiphilic polymer gels was revealed.The results show that the addition of FA can make the gel more robust with a denser network structure.On the fifth day,the elastic modulus(G’)increases from 5.2 to 7.0 Pa and the viscosity modulus(G")increases from 0.4 to 0.6 Pa at the frequency of 1 Hz,which improves the viscoelasticity of the gel system.More importantly,the F-PADC gel does not degrade after aging at 85℃for 180 d.And its viscoelasticity increases obviously,G′and G"increase to 110.0 Pa and 3.5 Pa,respectively,showing excellent anti-aging stability.Moreover,FA amphiphilic polymer gels have a good injectivity and a perfect plugging rate of 98.86%,which is better than that of sole amphiphilic polymer gels.This novel mixed FA amphiphilic polymer gels can prove to be a better alternative to conventional polymer gels to enhance oil recovery in high temperature and high salinity reservoirs.

Short photoperiod increases energy intake, metabolic thermogenesis and organ mass in silky starlings Sturnus sericeus

Environmental cues play important roles in the regulation of an animal＇s physiology and behavior. One such cue, photoperiod, plays an important role in the seasonal acclimatization of birds. It has been demonstrated that an animal＇s body mass, basal metabolic rate （BMR）, and energy intake, are all affected by photoperiod. The present study was designed to examine photoperiod induced changes in the body mass, metabolism and metabolic organs of the silky starling, Stumus sericeus. Captive silky starlings increased their body mass and BMR during four weeks of acclimation to a short photoperiod. Birds acclimated to a short photopedod also increased the mass of certain organs （liver, gizzard and small intestine）, and both gross energy intake （GEl） and digestible energy intake （DEI）, relative to those acclimated to a long photoperiod. Furthermore, BMR was positively correlated with body mass, liver mass, GEl and DEI. These results suggest that silky starlings increase metabolic thermogenesis when exposed to a short photoperiod by increasing their body and metabolic organ mass, and their GEl and DEI. These findings support the hypothesis that bird species from temperate climates typically display high phenotypic flexibility in thermogenic capacity.
