Erythropoietin receptor antibody inhibits oxidative stress induced retinal neovascularization in mice

AIM: To observe the effect of erythropoietin receptor antibody (EpoRA) on oxygen-induced retinal neovascularization. METHODS: C57BL / 63 mice, newly born 7 days, were exposed in high oxygen for 5 days and then placed in normal air for another 5 days, thus the animal models of retinal neovascularization were made. Experimental animals were allocated into 3 groups: normal, experimental and therapeutic. The normal group was fed in the normal environment. Into the vitreous cavity of mice in the therapeutic group were injected 2 mu L of EpoRA for 5 successive days. And the experimental group was injected the same amount of normal saline. Mice were sacrificed 17 days after birth and their eyeballs were removed for detection of malonaldehyde (MDA) content in the retina and by HE staining endothelial cells were counted the breaking through internal limiting membrane. RESULTS: In the experimental group, MDA content in the retina was 25.11 +/- 3.46 mu mol/g, which was obviously less than those in the normal group (5.34 +/- 1.79 mu mol/g, P<0.01) and those in the therapeutic group (12.04 +/- 1.91 mu mol/g). Pathological sections showed the nuclear number of the endothelial cells breaking through internal limiting membrane was 0.7 +/- 0.2 in normal group, and 46.2 +/- 6.5 in high oxygen induced experimental group. In the therapeutic group injected with EpoRA, it was lowered to 24.0 +/- 5.0(P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: EpoRA can effectively inhibit oxygen-induced neovascularization in retina of mouse by reducing oxidative damage.

The sensitivity of an experiment to detect the Majorana neutrino mass via neutrinoless double-beta decay(0νββ) strongly depends on the rate of background events that can mimic this decay. One major source of this background is the radioactive emissions from the laboratory environment. In our study, we focused on assessing the background contributions from environmental gamma rays, neutrons, and underground muons to the jinping bolometric demonstration experiment. This experiment uses an array of lithium molybdate crystal bolometers to probe the potential 0νββ decay of the100Mo isotope at the China jinping Underground Laboratory. We also evaluated the shielding effectiveness of the experimental setup through an attenuation study. Our simulations indicate that the combined background from environmental gamma rays, neutrons, and muons in the relevant100Mo 0νββ Q-value region can be reduced to approximately 0.003 cts/kg/keV/yr.

Chemical-looping combustion with zero energy penalty of CO2 separation is a significant breakthrough in resolving energy and environment problems for power generation systems. This paper summarizes the research on energy systems with chemical-looping combustion conducted in recent years, discloses the underlying mechanism of energy release of chemical-looping combustion, describes the trends of the key technology development, and presents the proposed chemical-looping combustion thermal cycles. This paper may provide a new direction to the synthesis of the next-generation energy system compatible with environment.

A preliminary study on the response of marine primary production to monsoon variations in the South China Sea Basic characteristics

Seasonal, interannual and interdecadal variations of monsoon over the South China Sea （SCS） directly influence the ocean circulation and the mass transport process, etc. , especially the changes of horizontal circulation pattern and upwelling area. These changes directly influence the nutrient transport and the photosynthesis of phytoplankton, which induce the change of the marine ecosystem in the SCS, including the change of marine primary production in this sea area. On the basis of climatic data for long-time series and primary production estimated by remote sensing, the multi-time scale variations of monsoon, seasonal and interannual variations of primary production, and the response of primary production to monsoon variations were analyzed. Furthermore, the spatio-temporal variations of primary production in different sea areas of the SCS and their relations to the monsoon variations were given. The results showed that the strong southwesterly prevailed over the SCS in summer whereas the vigorous northeasterly in winter. The seasonal primary production in the entire sea area of the SCS also produced a strong peak in winter and a suhpeak in summer. And the seasonal primary production distributions displayed different characteristics in every typical sea area. The variations of the annual and summer averaged primary production in the entire sea area of the SCS showed almost the same rising trend as the intensity of the summer monsoon. Especially for 1998, the summer monsoon reached almost the minimum in the past 54 a when the primary production was also found much lower than any other year （ 1999--2005 ）. The responses of annual primary production to monsoon variation were displayed to different extent in different sea areas of the SCS ; especially it was better in the deep sea basin. Such research activities could be very important for revealing the response of marine ecosystem to the monsoon variations in the SCS.

Ginsenoside Rh2(Rh2)is one of the major bioactive ginsenosides in Panax ***,the oral bioavailability of Rh2 is low,with P-glycoprotein(P-gp)and CYP3A4 being reported to be the main *** purpose of the present study was to determine the enhancing effect of piperine on the oral bioavailability as well as bioactivity of *** inhibitory effect of piperine on P-gp and CYP3A4 was determined using a Caco-2 monolayer model and a recombinant CYP3A4 metabolic system,*** pharmacokinetics of oral Rh2(10 mg·kg^(-1))administered alone or in combination with piperine(10 and 20 mg·kg^(-1))was performed in *** immune boosting effect of Rh2 was assessed in rats by measuring IL-12 level after treated by Rh2 alone or co-administered with *** results indicated that piperine significantly increased the permeability of Rh2 and inhibited the metabolism of *** pharmacokinetic study results showed that the AUC of Rh2 was significantly increased in combination with piperine at high dose(20 mg·kg^(-1))when compared to the control group,with relative bioavailability of 196.8%.The increase of Rh2 exposure led to increased serum levels of *** conclusion,piperine may be used as a bioenhancer to improve pharmacological effect of Rh2 when given orally.

In this article, we present a brief review of the discoveries of kinds of antimatter particles, including positron （^-e）, antiproton （^-p）, antideuteron （^-d） and antihelium-3 （3^-He）. Special emphasis is put on the discovery of the antihypertriton（∧^3^-H） and antihelium-4 nucleus （4^-He, or ^-α） which were reported by the RHIC-STAR experiment very recently. In addition, brief discussions about the effort to search for antinuclei in cosmic rays and study of the longtime confinement of the simplest antimatter atom, antihydrogen are also given. Moreover, the production mechanism of anti-light nuclei is introduced.

Social tagging is one of the most important characteristics of Web 2.0 services, and social tagging systems （STS） are becoming more and more popular for users to annotate, organize and share items on the Web. Moreover, online social network has been incorporated into social tagging systems. As more and more users tend to interact with real friends on the Web, personalized user recommendation service provided in social tagging systems is very appealing. In this paper, we propose a personalized user recommendation method, and our method handles not only the users＇ interest networks, but also the social network information. We empirically show that our method outperforms a state-of-the-art method on real dataset from *** dataset and Douban.
