Anaerobic microbial corrosion of iron-containing metals causes extensive economic damage.Some microbes are capable of direct metal-to-microbe electron transfer(electrobiocorrosion),but the prevalence of electrobiocorrosion among diverse methanogens and acetogens is poorly understood because of a lack of tools for their genetic manipulation.Previous studies have suggested that respiration with 316l stainless steel as the electron donor is indicative of electrobiocorrosion,because,unlike pure Fe^(0),316l stainless steel does not abiotically generate H2 as an intermediary electron carrier.Here,we report that all of the methanogens(Methanosarcina vacuolata,Methanothrix soehngenii,and Methanobacterium strain IM1)and acetogens(Sporomusa ovata and Clostridium ljungdahli)evaluated respired with pure Fe^(0)as the electron donor,but only M.vacuolata,Mx.soehngeni,and S.ovata were capable of stainless steel electrobiocorrosion.The electrobiocorrosive methanogens re-quired acetate as an additional energy source in order to produce methane from stainless steel.Cocultures of S.ovata and Mx.soehngeni demonstrated how acetogens can provide acetate to methanogens during corrosion.Not only was Meth-anobacterium strain IM1 not capable of electrobiocorrosion,but it also did not accept electrons from Geobacter metal-lireducens,an effective electron-donating partner for direct interspecies electron transfer to all methanogens that can directly accept electrons from Fe^(0).The finding that M.vacuolata,Mx.soehngeni,and S.ovata are capable of electrobiocorrosion,despite a lack of the outer-surface c-type cytochromes previously found to be important in other electrobiocorrosive microbes,demonstrates that there are multiple microbial strategies for making electrical contact with Fe^(0).

Background:Sports medicine(injury and illnesses)requires distinct coding systems because the International Classification of Diseases is insuf-ficient for sports medicine coding.The Orchard Sports Injury and Illness Classification System(OSIICS)is one of two sports medicine coding systems recommended by the International Olympic Committee.Regular updates of coding systems are required.Methods:For Version 15,updates for mental health conditions in athletes,sports cardiology,concussion sub-types,infectious diseases,and skin and eye conditions were considered particularly important.Results:Recommended codes were added from a recent International Olympic Committee consensus statement on mental health conditions in athletes.Two landmark sports cardiology papers were used to update a more comprehensive list of sports cardiology codes.Rugby union protocols on head injury assessment were used to create additional concussion codes.Conclusion:It is planned that OSIICS Version 15 will be translated into multiple new languages in a timely fashion to facilitate international accessibility.The large number of recently published sport-specific and discipline-specific consensus statements on athlete surveillance warrant regular updating of OSIICS.

Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome(AGS)is a systemic inflammatory disorder caused by mutations in any one of the nine different genes,whose deficiency provokes a type I(interferon)IFN response probably central to pathogenesis.^(1) ADAR1,one of the genes mutated in AGS(AGS6),encodes for an enzyme that belongs to the ADAR family(ADAR1,ADAR2,and ADAR3)that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine to inosine within double-stranded RNAs(dsRNAs)(RNA editing A-to-1).

General guidelines for the design of ligands for the enrichment of rare-earth elements by solid-liquid adsorption are described using coordination chemistry.Relevant properties of ligands include selectivity of metal ions based on adjustment of donor atom polarizability,denticity,and the pKarange of the binding sites.The selectivity of solid-phase materials for the enrichment of rare-earth ions by the ligand design guidelines is outlined,with special consideration of additional variable factors including steric hindrance,saturated binding sites,variability in speciation caused by the identity of counterions and ionic strength,and size-exclusivity in ligands stemming from differences in bite angle,preo rganization of ligands,or intraligand interactions.This review analyzes some principles of selectivity of rare-earth elements with ligands organized by donor type from examples collected from reports published between 2009 and 2021.

Development of necrotizing enterocolitis after blood transfusion in very premature neonates

Background Prior studies report conflicting evidence on the association between packed red blood cell(PRBC)transfu-sions and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC),especially in early weeks of life where transfusions are frequent and spontaneous intestinal perforation can mimic NEC.The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after day of life(DOl)14 in very premature neonates.Methods A retrospective cohort analysis of very premature neonates was conducted to investigate association between PRBC transfusions and NEC after DOl 14.Primary endpoints were PRBC transfusions after DOl 14 until the date of NEC diagnosis,discharge,or death.Wilcoxon ranked-sum and Fisher's exact tests,Cox proportional hazards regression,and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to analyze data.Results Of 549 premature neonates,186(34%)received transfusions after DOl 14 and nine(2%)developed NEC(median DOl=38;interquartile range=32-46).Of the nine with NEC after DOl 14,all were previously transfused(Pld not be estimated.Post hoc analysis of patients from DOl 10 onward included five additional patients who developed NEC between DOl 10 and DOl 14,and the hazard of NEC increased by a factor of nearly six after PRBC transfusion(hazard ratio=5.76,95%confidence interval=1.02-32.7;P=0.048).Conclusions Transfusions were strongly associated with NEC after DOl 14.Prospective studies are needed to determine if restrictive transfusion practices can decrease incidence of NEC after DOl 14.

Nowadays,a number of promising strategies are being developed that aim at combining diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities into clinically effective formulations.Thus,the combination of a modified release provided by an organic encapsulation and the intrinsic physico-chemical properties from an inorganic counterpart opens new perspectives in biomedical applications.Herein,a biocompatible magnetic lipid nanocomposite vehicle was developed through an efficient,green and simple method to simultaneously incorporate magnetic nanoparticles and an anticancer drug(doxorubicin)into a natural nano-matrix.The theranostic performance of the final magnetic formulation was validated in vitro and in vivo,in melanoma tumors.The systemic administration of the proposed magnetic hybrid nanocomposite carrier enhanced anti-tumoral activity through a synergistic combination of magnetic hyperthermia effects and antimitotic therapy,together with MRI reporting capability.The application of an alternating magnetic field was found to play a dual role,(i)acting as an extra layer of control(remote,on-demand)over the chemotherapy release and(ii)inducing a local thermal ablation of tumor cells.This combination of chemotherapy with thermotherapy establishes a synergistic platform for the treatment of solid malignant tumors under lower drug dosing schemes,which may realize the dual goal of reduced systemic toxicity and enhanced anti-tumoral efficacy.

BACKGROUND Neuropsychiatric symptoms(NPS)have been insufficiently examined in persons with aphasia(PWA)because most previous studies exclude participants with language and communication disorders.AIM To report a two-part study consisting of a literature review and an observational study on NPS in post-stroke aphasia.METHODS Study 1 reviewed articles obtained from PubMed,PsycINFO,Google Scholar and Cochrane databases after cross-referencing key words of post-stroke aphasia to NPS and disorders.Study 2 examined language deficits and activities of daily living in 20 PWA(median age:58,range:28-65 years;13 men)with the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised and the Barthel Index,respectively.Informants of these 20 PWA were proxy-evaluated with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and domain-specific scales,including the Stroke Aphasia Depression Questionnaire-10 item version and the Starkstein Apathy Scale.In addition,an adapted version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was directly administered to the PWA themselves.This observational study is based on the baseline assessment of an intervention clinical trial(EudraCT:2017-002858-36;ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT04134416).RESUlTS The literature review revealed a broad spectrum of NPS in PWA,including depression,anxiety,apathy,agitation/aggression,eating and sleep disorders,psychosis,and hypomania/mania.These findings alert to the need for improving assessment and treatment approaches of NPS taking into consideration their frequent occurrence in PWA.Study 2 showed that the 20 participants had mild-to-moderate aphasia severity and were functionally independent.A wide range of comorbid NPS was found in the post-stroke aphasic population(median number of NPS:5,range:1-8).The majority of PWA(75%)had depressive symptoms,followed by agitation/aggression(70%),irritability(70%),anxiety(65%)and appetite/eating symptoms(65%).Half of them also presented symptoms of apathy,whereas euphoria and psychotic symptoms were rare(5%).Domain-specific scales revealed that 45%of participant

The National Research Council recommends that genetic differentiation among subgroups of ethnic samples be lower than 3%of the total genetic differentiation within the ethnic sample to be used for estimating reliable random match probabilities for forensic use.Native American samples in the United States’Combined DNA Index System(CODIS)database represent four language families:Algonquian,Na-Dene,Eskimo-Aleut,and Salishan.However,a minimum of 27 Native American language families exists in the US,not including language isolates.Our goal was to ascertain whether genetic differences are correlated with language groupings and,if so,whether additional language families would provide a more accurate representation of current genetic diversity among tribal populations.The 21 short tandem repeat(STR)loci included in the Globalfiler^(■)PCR Amplification Kit were used to characterize six indigenous language families,including three of the four represented in the CODIS database(i.e.Algonquian,Na-Dene,and Eskimo-Aleut),and two language isolates(Miwok and Seri)using major population genetic diversity metrics such as F statistics and Bayesian clustering analysis of genotype frequencies.Most of the genetic variation(97%)was found to be within language families instead of among them(3%).In contrast,when only the three of the four language families represented in both the CODIS database and the present study were considered,4%of the genetic variation occurred among the language groups.Bayesian clustering resulted in a maximum posterior probability indicating three genetically distinct groups among the eight language families and isolates:(1)Eskimo,(2)Seri,and(3)all other language groups and isolates,thus confirming genetic subdivision among subgroups of the CODIS Native American database.This genetic structure indicates the need for an increased number of Native American populations based on language affiliation in the CODIS database as well as more robust sample sets for those language families.
