Influence of geography and climate on patterns of cell size and body size in the lizard Anolis carolinensis

Geographic patterns in body size are often associated with latitude,elevation,or environmental and climatic *** study investigated patterns of body size and cell size of the green anole lizard,Anolis carolinensis,and potential associations with geography or climatic *** were sampled from 19 populations across the native range,and body size,red blood cell size and size and number of muscle cells were *** data from local weather stations and latitude and longitude were entered into model selection with Akaike’s information criterion to explain patterns in cell and body *** variables did not drive any major patterns in cell size or body size;rather,latitude and longitude were the best predictors of cell and body *** general,smaller body and cell sizes in Florida anoles drove geographic patterns in *** size in Florida may be attributable to�q�the�geological history of the peninsular state or�the�unique ecological factors in this area,including a recently introduced *** contrast to previous studies,we found that *** does not follow Bergmann’s rule when the influence of Florida is ***,the opposite pattern of larger lizards in southern populations is evident in the absence of Florida populations,and mirrors the general pattern in *** cell size was negatively related to latitude and red blood cell size showed no latitudinal trend outside of *** patterns in the sizes of the 2 cell types confirm the importance of examining multiple cell types when studying geographic variation in cell size.

Epidemiology of work-related hand and wrist injuries in a referral center: A descriptive study

BACKGROUnD Occupational hand and wrist injuries(OHWIs)account for 25%of work-related accidents in low-and middle-income *** Colombia,more than 500000 occupational accidents occurred in 2021,and although the rate declined to less than 5%in 2020 and 2021,at least one in four accidents involved a hand or wrist *** To describe the OHWIs in workers seen at the emergency room at a second-level hospital in *** An observational study was performed using data from workers who experienced OHWIs and attended a second-level hospital,between June,2020 and May,*** overall frequency of OHWIs,as well as their distribution by sociodemo-graphic,clinical,and occupational variables,are ***,association patterns between sex,anatomical area(fingers,hand,wrist),and type of job were analyzed by correspondence analysis(CA).RESULTS There were 2.101 workers treated for occupational accidents,423(20.3%)were cases of OHWIs,which mainly affected men(93.9%)with a median age of 31 years and who worked mainly in mining(75.9%).OHWIs were more common in the right upper extremity(55.3%)and comprised different types of injuries,such as contusion(42.1%),laceration(27.9%),fracture(18.7%),and crush injury(15.6%).They primarily affected the phalanges(95.2%),especially those of the first finger(25.7%).The CAs showed associations between the injured anatomical area and the worker’s job that differed in men and women(explained variance>90%).COnCLUSIOn One out of five workers who suffered occupational accidents in Cundinamarca,Columbia had an OHWI,affecting mainly males employed in *** occupational profile is likely to lead to prolonged rehabilitation,and permanent functional *** results might be useful for adjusting preventive measures in cluster risk groups.

In the Arctic,environment and health are linked in myriad ways.A key emphasis has been on numerous long-lived contaminants in traditional foods,particularly marine mammals,and their well-documented impacts on human,animal and environmental health(“One health approach”).More recent concerns for Indigenous communities focus on the(side)effects of the switch to a modern,processed diet,which is accompanied by a loss of tradition and emerging health ***,the availability of traditional foods is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change,which also causes the emergence and spread of new and old diseases,such as *** change,including thawing permafrost and new forest fire regimes,threatens the built environment and *** particular,well-built,planned,and healthy housing is urgently needed,given that much time is spent *** care,particularly for remote and Indigenous communities,is sparse,and often ignores traditional knowledge and local *** communities in the Arctic continue to suffer from marginalization,resource colonization/extraction,and the impacts of *** examples of the green energy transition,such as in norway,continue a pattern of ignoring Indigenous rights and ***,the connection between environment and health in the Arctic is multifaceted and complex,and investigations and solutions ought to embrace an interdisciplinary and holistic approach toward improving Environmental and Human Health in the region.

Failure to Rescue as a Quality Metric in Congenital Heart Surgeries in a High-Complexity Service Provider Institution Located in a Middle-Income Country

Background:Failure to rescue has been an effective quality metric in congenital heart ***,mor-bidity and mortality depend greatly on non-modifiable individual factors and have a weak correlation with better-quality *** aim to measure the complications,mortality,and risk factors in pediatric patients undergoing congenital heart surgery in a high-complexity institution located in a middle-income country and compare it with other institutions that have conducted a similar ***:A retrospective observational study was conducted in a high-complexity service provider institution,in Cali,*** pediatric patients undergoing any congenital heart surgery between 2019 and 2022 were *** main outcomes evaluated in the study were complication,mortality,and failure to rescue *** and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with mortality as the outcome ***:We evaluated 308 congenital heart *** the outcomes,201(65%)complications occurred,23(7.5%)patients died,and the FTR of the entire cohort was 11.4%.The presence of a postoperative complication(OR 14.88,CI 3.06–268.37,p=0.009),age(OR 0.79,CI 0.57–0.96,p=0.068),and urgent/emergent surgery(OR 8.14,CI 2.97–28.66,pnificant variables in predicting ***:Failure to rescue is an effective and comparable quality measure in healthcare institutions and is the major contributor to postoperative mortality in congenital heart *** our higher mortality and complication rate,we obtained a comparable failure to rescue rate to high-income countries’health institutions.

The ubiquity of refractory organic matter in aquatic environments necessitates innovative removal *** radical-based advanced oxidation has emerged as an attractive solution,offering high selectivity,enduring efficacy,and anti-interference *** many technologies,sulfite activation,leveraging its cost-effectiveness and lower toxicity compared to conventional persulfates,stands ***,the activation process often relies on transition metals,suffering from low atom *** we introduce a series of single-atom catalysts(SACs)employing transition metals on g-C_(3)n_(4)substrates,effectively activating sulfite for acetaminophen *** highlight the superior performance of Fe/Cn,which demonstrates a degradation rate constant significantly surpassing those of ni/Cn and Cu/*** investigation into the electronic and spin polarization characteristics of these catalysts reveals their critical role in catalytic efficiency,with oxysulfur radical-mediated reactions ***,under visible light,the catalytic activity is enhanced,attributed to an increased generation of oxysulfur radicals and a strengthened electron donation-back donation *** proximity of Fe/Cn's d-band center to the Fermi level,alongside its high spin polarization,is shown to improve sulfite adsorption and reduce the HOMO-LUMO gap,thereby accelerating photo-assisted sulfite *** work advances the understanding of SACs in environmental applications and lays the groundwork for future water treatment technologies.

BACKGROUnD Prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is increasing,especially in patients with metabolic dysfunctionassociated steatotic liver disease(MASLD).AIM To investigate rifaximin(RIF)effects on epigenetic/autophagy markers in *** Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned(n=8,each)and treated from 5-16 wk:Control[standard diet,water plus gavage with vehicle(Veh)],HCC[high-fat choline deficient diet(HFCD),diethylnitrosamine(DEn)in drinking water and Veh gavage],and RIF[HFCD,DEn and RIF(50 mg/kg/d)gavage].Gene expression of epigenetic/autophagy markers and circulating miRnAs were *** All HCC and RIF animals developed metabolic-dysfunction associated steatohepatitis fibrosis,and cirrhosis,but three RIF-group did not develop *** animals who developed HCC with those who did not,miR-122,miR-34a,tubulin alpha-1c(Tuba-1c),metalloproteinases-2(Mmp2),and metalloproteinases-9(Mmp9)were significantly higher in the *** opposite occurred with Becn1,coactivator associated arginine methyltransferase-1(Carm1),enhancer of zeste homolog-2(Ezh2),autophagy-related factor LC3A/B(Map1 Lc3b),and p62/sequestosome-1(p62/SQSTM1)-*** with controls,Map1 Lc3b,Becn1 and Ezh2 were lower in HCC and RIF-groups(Pn HCC compared to RIF(Pn of Mmp9 was higher in HCC in relation to the control;the opposite was observed for p62/Sqstm1(Pn of p62/SQSTM1 protein was lower in the RIF-group compared to the control(P=0.024).There was no difference among groups for Tuba-1c,Aldolase-B,alpha-fetoprotein,and Mmp2(P>0.05).miR-122 was higher in HCC,and miR-34a in RIF compared to controls(Pn HCC compared to RIF,and the inverse was observed for miR-224(Pno difference among groups regarding miR-33a,miR-143,miR-155,miR-375 and miR-21(P>0.05).COnCLUSIOn RIF might have a possible beneficial effect on preventing/delaying liver carcinogenesis throu

HIIT对高脂喂养ApoE敲除鼠骨骼肌氧化应激的影响及肌肉因子BAIBA的保护作用

目的:探讨高强度间歇训练(high-intensity interval training,HIIT)对高脂喂养的载脂蛋白E(ApoE)敲除(Apo^(E-/-))小鼠骨骼肌氧化应激的改善作用以及肌肉因子β-氨基异丁酸(β-aminoisobutyic acid,BAIBA)在其中的可能调节机制。方法:9周龄健康雄性C57BL/6J小鼠和Apo^(E-/-)小鼠分别喂食标准和高脂饲料,其中C57BL/6J小鼠为基线对照组(WT,n=6),Apo^(E-/-)小鼠经高脂饲料喂养12周后随机分为Apo^(E-/-)安静组(Apo^(E-/-),n=10)和Apo^(E-/-)高强度间歇训练组(Apo^(E-/-)HIIT,n=10),Apo^(E-/-)HIIT组进行6周HIIT,WT和Apo^(E-/-)组在笼中自由活动。最后一次运动后48 h取小鼠两侧腿部腓肠肌进行氧化损伤、抗氧化及BAIBA生成相关指标的检测。随后采用L-BAIBA预孵育C2C12细胞,后用过氧化氢(H_(2)O_(2))诱导氧化应激,结合干预条件随机分为Control、H_(2)O_(2)和L-BAIBA+H_(2)O_(2)组。相差显微镜观察细胞形态,并检测细胞ROS水平和nrf2介导的抗氧化通路的相关指标。结果:1)与WT组相比,Apo^(E-/-)组小鼠骨骼肌氧化损伤相关的4-HnE修饰蛋白、蛋白质羰基含量和ROS水平显著升高,而抗氧化相关的p-nrf2蛋白表达和GSH含量显著降低;而与Apo^(E-/-)组相比,Apo^(E-/-)HIIT组小鼠骨骼肌4-HnE修饰蛋白和蛋白质羰基含量明显降低,p-nrf2蛋白表达和GSH含量明显升高。2)Apo^(E-/-)HIIT组小鼠骨骼肌生成BAIBA的相关酶基因Acads和Hadha mRnA的表达水平显著高于Apo^(E-/-)组。3)与Control组相比,H_(2)O_(2)干预后C2C12细胞明显皱缩,活细胞数量降低,ROS水平显著增加;而与H_(2)O_(2)组相比,L-BAIBA+H_(2)O_(2)组活细胞数量增加,形态较饱满,ROS水平明显降低。4)与Control组相比,H_(2)O_(2)显著降低了细胞nrf2、p-nrf2及其介导的抗氧化酶SOD1、nQO1和CAT蛋白以及合成GSH的相关酶基因Gss、Gsr和Gclm mRnA的表达水平,并显著降低了细胞GSH含量;而L-BAIBA+H_(2)O_(2)组较H_(2)O_(2)组则显著增加了p-nrf2、SOD1和nQO1蛋白以及Gss、Gsr、Gclc和Gclm mRnA的表达量,同时细胞GSH含量也显著增加。结论:6周HIIT降低了高脂喂养的Apo^(E-/-)小鼠骨骼肌的氧化损伤,其中肌肉因子BAIBA对nrf2介导的抗氧化信号的激活可能起着一定的作用。

A cross-sectional study of breastfed infants referred for tongue tie assessment and frenotomy in one Canadian health region
