long-term landscape changes in a subalpine spruce-fir forest in central Utah, USA

Background： In Western North America, increasing wildfire and outbreaks of native bark beetles have been mediated by warming climate conditions. Bioclimatic models forecast the loss of key high elevation species throughout the region. This study uses retrospective vegetation and fire history data to reconstruct the drivers of past disturbance and environmental change. Understanding the relationship among climate, antecedent disturbances, and the legacy effects of settlement-era logging can help identify the patterns and processes that create landscapes susceptible to bark beetle epidemics. Methods： Our analysis uses data from lake sediment cores, stand inventories, and historical records. Sediment cores were dated with radiometric techniques （14C and 210pb/137Cs） and subsampled for pollen and charcoal to maximize the temporal resolution during the historical period （1800 CE to present） and to provide environmental baseline data （last 10,500 years）. Pollen data for spruce were calibrated to carbon biomass （C t/ha） using standard allometric equations and a transfer function. Charcoal samples were analyzed with statistical models to facilitate peak detection and determine fire recurrence intervals. Results： The Wasatch Plateau has been dominated by Engelmann spruce forests for the last ～10,500 years, with subalpine fir becoming more prominent since 6000 years ago. This landscape has experienced a dynamic fire regime, where burning events are more frequent and of higher magnitude during the last 3000 years. Two important disturbances have impacted Engelmann spruce in the historical period： 1） high-grade logging during the late 19th century; and （2） a high severity spruce beetle outbreak in the late 20th century that killed 〉90 % of mature spruce （〉10 cm dbh）. Conclusions： Our study shows that spruce-dominated forests in this region are resilient to a range of climate and disturbance regimes. Beyond the stomach: An updated view of Helicobacter pylori pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an extremely common, yet underappreciated, pathogen that is able to alter host physiology and subvert the host immune response, allowing it to persist for the life of the host. H. pylori is the primary cause of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer. In the United States, the annual cost associated with peptic ulcer disease is estimated to be $6 billion and gastric cancer kills over 700000 people per year globally. The prevalence of H. pylori infection remains high (> 50%) in much of the world, although the infection rates are dropping in some developed nations. The drop in H. pylori prevalence could be a double-edged sword, reducing the incidence of gastric diseases while increasing the risk of allergies and esophageal diseases. The list of diseases potentially caused by H. pylori continues to grow; however, mechanistic explanations of how H. pylori could contribute to extragastric diseases lag far behind clinical studies. A number of host factors and H. pylori virulence factors act in concert to determine which individuals are at the highest risk of disease. These include bacterial cytotoxins and polymorphisms in host genes responsible for directing the immune response. This review discusses the latest advances in H. pylori pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Up-to-date information on correlations between H. pylori and extragastric diseases is also provided.

本文研究了结球白菜(Brassica pekinensis R.)早熟杂种G在0°、5°、10°和15℃下贮藏,对外源乙烯处理的反应及乙烯的释放量。结果表明:1.结球白菜贮藏中,只有当乙烯存在达到作用浓度时才会发生脱帮。乙烯致脱帮的作用会因温度提高而显著加剧。2.商品率的降低因外源乙烯处理而加剧,并显然与脱帮相关。3.结球白菜贮藏中的呼吸强度和乙烯释放量显然随温度上升而增高,并随贮藏期延长而降低,但在贮藏后期均有上升趋势。4.结球白菜贮藏中的乙烯释放量较低,其变化幅度由0℃,0.021±0.013μl/kg·h,至15℃0.142±0.092μl/kg·h。并显然因机械伤而增高。5.结球白菜贮藏中的呼吸强度0℃为2.93±0.83ml/kg·h,15℃达13.28±2.20ml/kg·h呼吸强度因外源乙烯处理而增高。

The prognosis of pancreatic cancer is poor with the overall 5-year survival rate of less than 5%changing minimally over the past decades and future projections predicting it developing into the second leading cause of cancer related mortality within the next *** into the mechanisms of pancreatic cancer development,progression and acquired chemoresistance have been constant for the past few decades,thus resulting in the identification of human nucleoside transporters and factors affecting cytotoxic uptake via said *** review summaries the aberrant expression and role of human nucleoside transports in pancreatic cancer,more specifically human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1/2(hENT1,hENT2),and human concentrative nucleoside transporter 1/3(hCNT1,hCNT3),while briefly discussing the connection and importance between these nucleoside transporters and mucins that have also been identified as being aberrantly expressed in pancreatic *** review also discusses the incidence,current diagnostic techniques as well as the current therapeutic treatments for pancreatic ***,we address the importance of chemoresistance in nucleoside analogue drugs,in particular,gemcitabine and we discuss prospective therapeutic treatments and strategies for overcoming acquired chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer by the enhancement of human nucleoside transporters as well as the potential targeting of mucins using a combination of mucolytic compounds with cytotoxic agents.

Neutropenia in colorectal cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: An observational cohort study

BACKGROUND The implications of neutropenia after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC)treatment have never been *** To evaluate the occurrence of neutropenia and its effect on the risk of increased Clavien-Dindo morbidity as well as its effect on overall or disease-free *** All patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases(1996-2015)completing cytoreductive surgery and oxaliplatin-based HIPEC treatment from a biinstitutional database(Uppsala and Sydney)were included in the ***-Dindo grade 3-4 morbidity differences between the neutropenia group vs nonneutropenia group were calculated and Kaplan-Meier curves with log rank test were *** and multivariable Cox regression models for diseasefree survival were *** Two hundred and forty-six patients were identified–32 postoperative any-grade neutropenia patients and 214 non-neutropenia *** neutropenia group had more combination oxaliplatin+irinotecan treatment than the nonneutropenia group(66%vs 13%,P=0.0001).The neutropenia group was not associated with increased Clavien-Dindo grade 3-4 *** overall survival was 53 mo vs 37 mo for the neutropenia and non-neutropenia group,P=*** disease-free survival was 16 mo vs 11 mo,respectively,P=*** was an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival with hazard ratio:0.58,95%confidence interval:0.36-0.95,P=*** 13%of patients developed neutropenia which was not associated with increased Clavien-Dindo grade 3-4 *** was an independent positive prognostic factor for disease-free survival and was associated with more intense HIPEC *** is in direct contrast to the current paradigm of decreasing the treatment intensity.

To advance organ-on-a-chip development and other areas befitting from physiologically-relevant biomembranes,a microfluidic platform is presented for synthesis of biomembranes during gelation and investigation into their role as extracellular matrix *** this work,high-throughput studies of collagen,chitosan,and collagen-chitosan hybrid biomembranes were carried out to characterize and compare key properties as a function of the applied hydrodynamic conditions during ***,depending on the biopolymer material used,varying flow conditions during biomembrane gelation caused width,uniformity,and swelling ratio to be differently affected and ***,cell viability studies of seeded fibroblasts were conducted,thus showing the potential for biological applications.

Male infertility： lifestyle factors and holistic, complementary, and alternative therapies

While we may be comfortable with an allopathic approach to male infertility, we are also responsible for knowledge about lifestyle modifications and holistic, complementary, and alternative therapies that are used by many of our patients. This paper provides an evidence-based review separating fact from fiction for several of these therapies. There is sufficient literature to support weight reduction by diet and exercise, smoking cessation, and alcohol moderation. Supplements that have demonstrated positive effects on male fertility on small randomized controlled trial （RCT） include aescin, coenzyme Qlo, glutathione, Korean red ginseng, l-carnitine, nigella sativa, omega-3, selenium, a combination of zinc and folate, and the Menevit antioxidant. There is no support for the use of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, or saffron. The data for Chinese herbal medications, acupuncture, mind-body practice, scrotal cooling, and faith-based healing are sparse or inconclusive.
